True, but all of the logos were variations on the original logo. ('Course, the new one is as well.) But I think he may be right that MTV didn't officially drop the tag "Music Television" until this week (although they often used logos without it).

Old and new logos:

The Wiki on MTV's logos.

Perhaps we should spend the rest of this thread debating what the M stands for now.

Money?
Mediocrity?
Merde?

Manwhore?
Me?

(Before it finally croaked, Mademoiselle tried to rebrand itself as "the magazine for your me years." No one wants to read something that's implicitly saying "you're selfish! whoo hoo!!")

I remember in HS, there were kids whose parents wouldn't let them watch MTV. What was up with that? The Real World: Fill-in-the-blank was an episode of Sesame Street back in the early 90s compared to what it has been in the past 5 or 6 seasons.

MTV hasn't been about music for at least 10 years, I would say closer to 15, but meh...

collabrations with MoMA. Well, that does it for the last little bit of credibility they have. MoMA, I mean. I agree with Ms. Gwyn, MTV went downhill once they started to catergoize the videos. I miss Old School MTV, when it was one random video after another, breaking only for beavis and butthead and newsflash with Kurt Loader.

I also like Ms. Gwyn's location.

No more MTV at all. So they removed the ‘Music Television’ from the logo. Big deal. We all know the acronym MTV still stands for music television. So why keep keep calling it MTV at all?
Two words: Brand Name

If you're referencing what I think you are here, I believe it should be, "Am I right, people?"

MTV could have kept some of the original programming style when it expanded channels (MTV2 MTV Tres, etc.) and kept those who grew up with it interested, and still had new marketing and advertising for their target audiences. Unfortunately they didn't and VH1 did the same thing changing to tv shows and not being a station that was adult contemporary.

M for millenials, morons, morally bankrupt?

Sidenote: I knew I wasn't the only person in the world who remembers when VH1 was ALL Kenny G, old school Mariah, and Celine Dion. Before it was the home of C-list celebrity dating shows.

I was one of those kids. I thought my parents were nuts for banning me from watching music videos (no matter the channel), soap operas, etc. Comparatively, times now are way worse, but content was suggestive back then. I remember singing SWVs song Downtown. The lyrics went: "Downtown is the way to my love..." My father got so mad and told me to never sing that song again. I didn't understand because I thought the song was about shopping (I was a pre-teen/early teen at the time) as Downtown Crossing/Downtown Boston was a shopping district. Now I know the song was actually about oral sex.

The funny thing is I am smack in the middle of reading a branding case study about MTV which is why I clicked on this thread. Because of their loss in market share, new market needs, etc. they really couldn't have kept their original programming style. Too many competitors entering into the market, even with their small viewership numbers, and their audience became bored with the format fairly quickly.
