Why do you only want to join that organization? Many people who are legacies (or for other reasons) want to pledge a chapter simply because of what they have heard about the house. Even if Zeta Phi Beta was on your campus, there's no guarantee that you would get along with the sisters. Since you really want to be a part of greek life, why don't you take a look at what all of the other houses have to offer? If you were going through rush and had your heart set on only one of the chapters, a good rule to follow is to give every house your full attention and to give them all a chance. You never know what you might find!

NPHC rush doesn't work like that. Rushing all the houses pretty much kills your chances of getting into any of them.

Smiley15, please visit GC's Zeta Phi Beta forum and pay close attention to the stickied threads.

My bad!

Wait, let me ask. Please forgive my ignorance, but I honestly don't know. Say I went to a school and wanted to join a NPHC org. It would be bad advice to just see what the groups on campus were like and what they were about? I should have one group in my head in particular and only go that route?

I'm just wondering- again, please forgive my not knowing about this process.

Any NPHCer correct me if I'm wrong, but you are supposed to want to join the organization because of thier mission and the works that they do. NPHC puts a lot more focus on the international aspect then NIC or NPC usually does.

QFP

I'm usually not on the ball with this, but I figured I would do it since no one else did.

Short answer: Yes. Basically, the aspirant would have done his/her "homework" before they even get to campus. Once there he/she would quietly pursue their org of choice to become a member.

There are a few more subtle nuances involved, but this is the "short" answer.

No problem on not knowing. I knew a little about NPC rush, but learned more when I joined GC.

While I understand the desire to want to be in a sorority while in college, the NPHC organizations expect their members to be active after college in alumnae chapters and really honor their lifetime committment. Therefore you should not choose to pursue membership in either organization just because those are the only 2 NPHC sororities on your campus. If you just know one of them is for you, that's one thing but perhaps it's one of the other 2 that will better fit you and that's why you can't make up your mind. I'm not saying that's the case but it's better to research all 4 NPHC sororities. If you think that one might be a better fit and it's not offered at your school, look into how it might be possible to bring that sorority to your school or wait until after you graduate and pursue membership on the alumnae level where you live. If you plan to be active after college (which you should if wanting to join one of our organizations), then you want to make sure you make the right decision because it is a life decision and it cannot be changed after being inducted. The oldest member of my alumnae chapter is 94 years old and she has been active since college. Think about it and do the research. Good Luck!

Some people come to college knowing exactly which NPHC org they want to join.

Others only know they want to join an NPHC org in general.

For the latter group, they should most definitely investigate the various orgs, from the national websites down to the temperaments of the women (or men) on campus.

I was one of those people who did not necessarily know which fraternity I wanted to pledge.

My Retro Recruitment thread is here.

She IS awesome...so much wisdom. She is what my sorority calls a "Cultured Pearl." This is a member that's been active for 50+ years and we are blessed to have 2 of them in my alumnae chapter.
