Disney's First Black Princess
This is very cool, but a long time coming. The movie is coming out in 2009. I wonder who is going to be the voices. I hope it gets the same reception as other Disney animated movies. It is going to be traditional animation, so it is going to be interesting to see how it is received.

From Wikipedia, the source of all credibility
On December 1, 2006, a detailed casting call was announced for the film at the Manhattan Theatre Source forum. The casting call states the film as being an American fairy tale musical set in New Orleans during the 1920s Jazz Age, and provides a detailed list of the film's major characters, including the leading character, Maddy, who will be the first African American Disney princess. It was reported that Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, and Anika Noni Rose are all being considered for the title role.

I heard this on the radio and I think it's great...but I hate Jennifer Hudson so if she's voicing it, I won't see it.

I'm not a fan either....
I am glad that a "real" animated movie is coming out.... esp. since it's been awhile since Disney last released one. I'd be interested to see how it turns out, because it seems all of the other Disney "princesses" were based on fairy tales (Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Jasmine, Tinkerbell...) and this storyline isn't an old fairytale per se (at least not to my knowledge.. it might be a folk tale in other parts of the country)
It seems like this might be another version of Cinderella maybe? The chambermaid has a fairy godmother and she ends up marrying the prince.... the debutante chick throws a fit because she wanted to marry the prince...maybe the voodoo lady turned the chambermaid into a frog? and the prince kisses the frog?

Not because she great or anything but she is really not a controversy icon.

Disney's First Black Princess... um "Disney's" first thats for sure
Ladies
To acknowledge the fact that Africa was and is home to royalty, is to admit that it had and still has culture, art, wealth and beauty, politics and education... and we can't have that now can we, because what will be the excuse for slavery... segregation and discrimination against Africans and their descendants... so we must start the story with servitude because slavery is where history began for African Americans at least that’s where it begins in the American text books... need I say more.

But I've got street savoire faire.
Why should I worry?

It's just bebopulation
And I got street saviore faire
The rhythm of the city,
But once you get it down
Then you can own this town
You can wear the crown..

I'm sorry, but I disagree that this is ignoring African culture. It does seem like it will focus on African American culture in general and creole culture in particular, however seeing that as a default ignorance of Africa itself is imposing your predisposed notions on the matter. You can always criticize a writer for not doing something differently. Is any writer who writes a fantasy set in America somehow failing because they did not set it in Africa? Sometimes stories just go where they go. Are they at fault for setting in in New Orleans and not Georgia? What about Chicago? Why not the Caribbean?

Hey, Disney's first East Asian "princess" wasn't royalty either and nobody really cares...people were only complaining about cultural inaccuracies. They could very well have used another famous Chinese tale about the moon lady/goddess, Shang Ngo, but in the story, she ends up living on the moon by with only a rabbit and a Gaston-like woodcutter while her husband is still on earth.

It should be interesting. I haven't been a huge Disney fan in a few years so I don't know if I'd see it in the theater.
I did laugh at the big New Orleans accent and missing teeth of that bug. It gave me a Song of the South flashback.
They changed her name and that she's a chamber maid. Okay. I read in the comments section of youtube that the frog turns into a white prince? Is this true? If it is, I don't think it would've been too much to ask that the frog turn into a black prince. No need to wait until we have a black princess to celebrate the joys of interracial dating.
Other than that, there will be something in it that can be criticized. Just like most Disney movies. Can't please everyone.
