Greek life and religion

Hi, I'm not a member of a greek letter org yet, but I have a real question for you guys.
Why is it that some Muslims are apart of sororities and fraternities while other Muslims say greek life conflicts with the religion of Islam?
I know a woman who pledged AKA in her undergrad days, then she became Muslim; joining the Nation of Islam. Now when I mention AKA she says, "Oh, I'm not even apart of that now, I don't pay my dues!"
While on the other hand, such great Muslim followers like Ben Muhammed (Chavis) of the NAACP are apart of Greek orgs (he's with Phi Beta Sigma)?
Does anyone have any insight?
