Greek life and religion
Hi, I'm not a member of a greek letter org yet, but I have a real question for you guys.
Why is it that some Muslims are apart of sororities and fraternities while other Muslims say greek life conflicts with the religion of Islam? I know a woman who pledged AKA in her undergrad days, then she became Muslim; joining the Nation of Islam. Now when I mention AKA she says, "Oh, I'm not even apart of that now, I don't pay my dues!" While on the other hand, such great Muslim followers like Ben Muhammed (Chavis) of the NAACP are apart of Greek orgs (he's with Phi Beta Sigma)? Does anyone have any insight? |
Most BGLO's associate their organization with Christian principals. This may or may not be an issue for some individuals.

That sister's decision not to pay dues may just be a decision that has nothing to do with religion. As a Muslim (not Nation of Islam) member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, I don't see anything conflicting with the organization and my religious beliefs, otherwise, I wouldn't have joined. I've heard of people using their devotion to Christianity as a reason not to pay ues, so I don't know what each individuals problem was. If not affiliating with a greek organization is better for someone spiritually, that's just a decision that person will have to make. Also, greek organizations were founded on Christian principles, but in principle, Christianity and Islam share common basic principles- service, scholarship, love for your brother or sister, etc. I'd advise you to ask those particular Muslims who were Greek why how Greek life conflicts with the practice of Islam. Don't ask someone who is not greek because that person is just assuming things.

Like I said the other time. I have a LS who was a MUSLIM when we crossed back in '91. She was Muslim, BEFORE she became an AKA. Just like I have LSs who are Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, non-denominational, athiest, 7th day adventist, etc.

I also have an ls who was born a Muslim. One of my dearest Sorors, my sands and number from another School recently converted to Islam and is still an active Soror.
I believe that it is an individual decision whether to continue to be active or not to be active, to pledge or not to pledge. For most people it does not take away from who they are or their relationship with GOD/ALLAH, but for some, they feel that it does, so they cease to be active. Quite frankly these are the people who pledge for the wrong reasons (i.e. I like the colors, They throw phat parties, They are some baaad steppers, I like their image, etc.). When these same people begin to identify with themselves outside of the Sorority or Fraternity, they no longer see a relationship or bond with it, therefore, their reasons to be active cease. Ima leave you with something to ponder...Does the organiZation make you or do you make the organiZation? |
