Favre finally calls it quits!!!

Only took 17 years!!

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Brett Favre has decided to retire from the NFL after 17 seasons.

FOX Sports first reported Tuesday that the Green Bay Packers quarterback informed the team in the last few days. ESPN.com said that according to Favre's agent the quarterback told coach Mike McCarthy of his decision.

Only two years removed from perhaps his worst season, Favre had a resurgence in 2007. He broke several career records. Among them was Dan Marino's career mark for career touchdown passes. He powered the Packers to an NFC North title and a 13-3 regular-season record. He was named to his ninth Pro Bowl.

Part of me is just glad that he finally made up his mind. The local news (Milwaukee) has been completely dominated by people trying to predict whether or not he would retire. 4 out of 5 nights a week it has been a feature story. For the past 3 years.

now the next 4 months will feature if he will change his mind and 'play one more season'.

I won't believe it until week 2 of regular season.

The NFL just got a little bit uglier.

Sorry OTW. I just thought I'd bump an existing thread since no one was talking about it in a new thread.

He isnt a fool, just someone who decided he wasnt quite ready for retirement! MANY football players change their minds after they retire and to call a 3 time MVP, superbowl QB, future Hall of Famer a fool is just ridiculous.

It IS ridiculous because of what he has pout Green Bay thru these last few years....every year for awhile there has been a Favre watch...will he or won't he....will he or won't he and after awhile it became a beautiful car wreck that is bound to be repeated come next year should this one be a successful one.

And please......since you emphasized "Many"....please make a list....how many players at or near Favre's caliber contemplated retirement or actually retired only to come back?

Hmmmm....let's take a running head start.

Not Jerry Rice, nor John Elway....maybe Joe Montana. Trent Green needed one more concussed season to do him in.....Preist Holmes...nah...doesn't count.

Vinnie T only did it out of need and no one else was available, not out of hubris....

Heck I thought for a moment a long time ago, someone could coax Rich Gannon out because after he left the Raiders SUCKED...and still suck....

Deion Sanders did it so you can put him on your list....

I will let you continue....

Ok maybe the word MANY is a little exagerated, but he certainly isnt the first nor will he be the last. Ted Thompson's arrival at Green Bay was when his indecision to play at the end of each season began. He and TT have never liked each other and Brett has never felt lke TT wanted him to stay on board. With that said... I am not going to go look for a list of names because I have only had one cup of coffee and I am not up for it... but I remember a list being posted on a different site by someone and I was shocked there were many pro athletes who do change their mind return to the sport with a different team... but dont forget Lombardi himself retired from the Packers only to return to coach another team, Reggie White retired and came back and so did Michael Jordan a couple of times (ok basketball not football but still) ...

Another Green Bay example--Reggie White. Retired and return a few seasons later to play for... the Titans?

This who Favre debacle is just.... ugh. They should have let him come back right away. But since they didn't, he should have been a big boy and buried the hatchet when he did have a chance to return. I mean, wasn't the point in returning to make it to one more Super Bowl? I guess I don't see the Jets as that kind of team (although improved, but not quite ready for prime time).

Just a big ol mess--and as I true Green Bay fan, very disappointing.
