Soror Joan Higginbotham in Chicago!
I met Soror Joan Higginbotham today at a reception held in her honor at the DuSable Museum of African-American History! She is, of course, every bit as impressive, gracious and poised in person as she is in every print, TV or radio interview you've seen. She's also just as gorgeous, and she is tiny!
Chicago is her hometown and so of course we gave her some extra special love, and she very graciously recognized all of the Sorors in attendance. She talked about how meaningful it was to take all of the items she did into orbit, including the banner displaying our Founders.
She also took an exact replica of Bessie Coleman's pilot's license, which had been given to her by the DuSable Museum. She returned it to the museum today in a gorgeous display with pictures and authentication. It will be displayed permanently at DuSable. Very moving moment!
Soror Joan also signed programs and took pictures with all of the attendees -- and took a separate group picture with Sorors. You know we wanted her to throw up the 'mid in the pictures but she said she was prohibited from doing so while in her NASA uniform.
I just could not be more proud of her. Proud of her as an African-American woman and certainly proud to call her my Soror!
