President Barack Obama - Time Person of the Year

http://poy.time.com/2012/12/19/perso...-barack-obama/

What do y'all think of this?

I personally wish it could have been one of the heroes of the Newtown shooting, but apparently the voting took place before the shooting occurred.

However, congratulations to the President.

Personally I don't think we should get re-runs of person of the year but oh well.

Yeah, I think I agree with this. Once you get the award once, you shouldn't be able to get it again.

The "award," though?

It's a publication. They're going to do what they need to do to sell copies and get publicity.

Award was the wrong word. I was thinking more of an honor.

I wouldn't even call it that; Person of the Year in the past has been a person/group of people/thing that has been influential or important but not always in a good way. ex: "The Endangered Earth" had been one.
Also, Gorbachev has been it 2 times, so Obama is not the first to be it twice, but I don't think he should have been it this year. I think Malala would have been a better choice, but Protesters were last year, so this may have been too repetitive as well.

These two guys should be the winner. They won an election with minimal budget against the incumbent Governor who happen to be backed by almost all the political parties. The incumbent used racism, religion and other method to try to discredit these two, but they still won by a wide margin. And now, 2 months into their term, they're cleaning up the notoriously corrupt province government of Jakarta using nuclear tactic:

(1) All the budget meeting are now taped and uploaded into youtube
(2) The governor bring camera where ever he goes and take pictures. So when the head department said it's done, he just showed them the picture
(3) The governor also showed up unannounced randomly to the different government installation to see if they're open and running properly
(4) The vice-governor answer his tweeter account about complaint, including one case where the local principle were charging parents outside the fee that was accepted. Within 1 week, that principle was fired and the school was put on notice by the governor office.

Jokowi himself have been mentioned as possible presidential candidate for 2014. And it's also cool that he's a fan of heavy metal and death metal. Was standing next to him last weekend during the Guns n Roses concert.

Their profile on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joko_Widodo (Governor)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basuki_Cahaya_Purnama (Vice Governor)

Even Hitler and Stalin received this "honor"

I don't think someone should get it twice, and I don't think Obama did anything of particular importance this year that would make him deserve this over a few others that were nominated.

What about all of the people who rescued others or pets during Hurricane Sandy? Or even the news media, who do their level every day to make our opinions for us? The President did nothing worthwhile to deserve this honor, on the contrary, there are still many events to which he hasn't answered (or had his staff answer).

Y'all, seriously? Who cares? This week's magazine is next week's recycling in a retiree's house. (who reads magazines anymore?)

No matter how you feel about the president, this isn't even close to being anything important.

True. Hell, I've been Person of the Year. (What year was it they named the American Servicemember? I forget. I think it was just before I retired.)

I majored in magazine journalism during school and this issue has been ready to press way before the Newtown tragedy so sadly I know that couldn't have been an option.

I read an article from Cosmo that said a woman hasnt been person of the year for 26 years so personally I wish it was Malala, or the the female CEO of yahoo! just to spice it up. I just don't get why it would be Obama again.

If the issue had been written an published a couple of months later, I think it should have been something like "The Everyday Hero," which could highlight people like Malala, those who helped rescue people/animals/important things during Hurricane Sandy, and Ms. Soto (and the other teachers and students) from Sandy Hook... basically ordinary civillians doing courageous things to better the world. I think some of these events just happened too late in the year, or didn't make enough impact individually to 'define the year'.
Obama didn't do anything incredibly different this year, other than winning again, but many would say even that wasn't a surprise or an accomplishment considering the GOPs missteps surrounding the election. I don't think he should be it again, but given the time that the publishers have to decide on, compose, and interview/photoshoot, I don't know of who or what else the could have done.

ETA: I do still subscribe to Time, though.
