UC dues question
Hi! I am going to be rushing this fall at UCSB and my family will be paying my dues. I havent been able to get a clear range of prices for the quarterly dues yet. Ive heard it ranges from $300 a quarter to $300 a month. My family could afford the $300 a quarter easily but $300 a month would be too much.
If anyone could tell me roughly what a UC CPC sorority costs per quarter that would be great! Thank you for your help.

Greek Life didn't give you this information?

I haven't gotten any information on it yet. But im sure they will let us know at rush. The only thing is, I would like to know now before I get even more excited about rushing and potential (hopefully) pledging. I am very grateful that my parents are willing to pay my dues but I understand that they can only fund so much.
Any information would be helpful! Would $900 a quarter be a crazy amount?

This is a question that you need to ask in Greek Life. Has school started? You shouldn't have to wait for rush to speak to the GL advisor.

School has not started. I still have a few weeks, it is on quarter schedules.
I will call the GL advisor tomorrow. If any UC greeks have a few figures to tell me right now, that would be great! How much did you guys end up paying each quarter? How much were dues and additional fees?

It really depends. You should definitely ask your Greek Life office.
I'm currently a student at UC Berkeley, and at least for fraternities, it ranges between $300-$900 per semester. This works out to approximately $200-$600 per quarter.
In any case, attend recruitment and see how it turns out.

Thank you! So from UC to UC the average dues will be similar right?
I looked up UC Davis and they said between 300 and 500 a quarter.
Im hoping thats about right for SB!

Dues at UCLA vary from sorority to sorority. I would assume this is the same at most UC's (I may be mistaken, my apologies in advance if thats the case) Most have payment plans to help with cost per quarter. When you go through rush they should give you a slight break down of the costs but you can always call the Greek Life office like stated above and they should be able to give you a good idea before rush starts. They can be anywhere from $300 a quarter to almost $900 a quarter.

Thank you! Will Greek Life tell me which sororities are the lower cost ones and which are the more expensive because that is a huge difference in dues. Finances could impact my decision on which sorority i would choose.

Hi there,
I went to UC Irvine and while I'm not sure if the dues are the same as the chapters at UCSB, more information can't hurt, right?
I would say our Panhellenic chapter dues ranged between $300-$500 dollars per quarter (one chapter's dues are much higher than the rest, but that is because they have a chef, so I won't include them).
And also, the first quarter you are a new member there are higher fees because of new member fees, initiation fees, etc. So be prepared for that (I didn't know that and was completely surprised).
But like I said, I'm not really sure what the dues are like at UCSB. I think I've heard that they are more expensive than other UC's, but again, not sure. Definitely try contacting someone at Greek Life- I'm pretty sure the VP Recruitment's contact information in on their website!
Good luck!!

http://www.sa.ucsb.edu/osl/GreekLife...brochure09.pdf -- page 24. This is the 2009 guide. I imagine they'll be updating the information and distributing a 2010 version when recruitment begins.
This is general information but you can work with this until you visit each sorority to find out what your financial obligations will be. I may be the only one, but I really suggest against calling the Greek Life office. When I worked on campus, the weeks right before school began were always the busiest for us.
Just please be patient and wait until you reach that part of recruitment. Keep in mind that your first year as a new member will likely be more expensive than the rest of your college years because of one time new member and initiation fees, cost of a Badge, etc.
...and I hate to break it to you, but as far as your last sentence is concerned, recruitment is mutual selection. So just because you choose XYZ because they're the most affordable, they're gonna have to choose you, too. On the flip side -- sorority ABC might be the most affordable, but after visiting the house and meeting the sisters, you find that you don't find yourself calling it home. Something to think about.

Unless there are 3 sororities with jets in the back yard and three that basically live in cracker boxes, the difference between groups isn't going to be THAT radical.
Don't rank a sorority higher just because they're cheaper. That is a very good way to make yourself miserable.
Also, just because a group has the least expensive dues, it doesn't mean it's the "cheapest" overall. If the members themselves live in a more expensive style there's no way the Greek life office can tell you that.

Can you possibly take on a part-time job to earn some of that money? You can do something on or close to campus. Work 10 hours a week and earn at least $50 a week - that's $200 a month.
I worked at the student union info desk and sold candy for a semester. I got paid to sit there whether people came by or not, so I got a lot of homework done. Something else that I did in college is type/proof people's papers. Then again, this was before everyone had computers, and people still hand-wrote their papers first. I charged $1-3 a page to type, proof and edit for grammar/spelling. Of course, I was an English major, so it was easy for me. I even helped a professor with his (second) Masters dissertation for an entire semester.
Your campus career center should have listings of PT jobs, both general and related to your major. You might also ask your parents that in lieu of holiday and birthday gifts, if you can use the money towards dues. During breaks, line up jobs like babysitting or helping in an office. You can also get rid of things you don't use (we all have junk that just takes up space) and sell them on E-bay. Lastly, some chapters offer financial assistance in the form of scholarships. If you really want to make it work, there are a hundred different ways to do it. Good luck!

Maybe not. She might be weighing her options among all the sororities at UCSB (NPC and non-NPC) and wants to compare prices.

Based on her first post I was under the impression that she was interested in Panhellenic sororities.
