What did you call me?

At the ATL Greek Picnic (and I dislike the word picnic) every Divine Nine Organization was WELL represented! It was really a great experience, albeit HOT and SWELTERING!

However, an AKA with a great hair do (her locs were beautiful) said something to me about my hair as well (my hair is loc'd too). After I told her I liked her hair, she said, "Thanks Soror!"

My mouth and the mouth of my SororZ and LS'Z DROPPED! It's just unheard of here to call a fellow greek sister Soror unless you are in the same org.

I didn't get a chance to ask her if she was from another region, but I do wonder if anyone has had similar experiences. Maybe in a diff region, all greeks refer to each other as frat and soror.

Am I mistaken? What do YOU call women of another organization?

I know here in ATL we say Sistergreek, or just Greek.

Many people who are interested in NPHC relations or active in NPHC chapters (at the graduate level) use "frat(er)" or "soror" to refer to any NPHCer. This often happens at NPHC functions.

I don't do it, but it doesn't offend me.

What I say depends on how I'm feeling. Never "soror," though.

Yes, I agree with Dr. Phil. It's more of an NPHC Alumnae thing among SOME who are really involved in NPHC activities in their local NPHC chapter or who hold office in these chapters. I've also heard of this among our regional and national officers, including the presidents (the leadership).

I think it's safe to say that most members (no matter the region) do not refer to members of other NPHC organizations as frat or soror. I'm from the Northeast and mostly we say sistergreek. Personally, I wouldn't be highly offended if a sistergreek called me soror because I know where that comes from but only my sorority sisters are my sorors.

It could have been a slip of the tongue.

Case in point: I was at a stepshow once and a girl came over to me bearing pink and green party favors. I said Thank you soror a second before it registered that she was not my soror but was in another organization. All that pink and green she was bearing threw me off. My ls clowned me too.

It happens. Not often, but it does. :shrugging:

I've never been called soror by a member of another org, nor have I slipped and made the mistake.

I have a Delta friend who uses the term 'Sisterfriend'.

Of course you haven't. But like I said, slips of tongue do happen occasionally, and I can own up to mine.

To the other question, I have heard sistergreek, and I use that on sites like this occasionally. But in other circumstances, I would call women of other organizations by their names, and if I don't know it, and I want to, then I ask.

Years ago, we used the term "sister-soror" to refer to other NPHC sorority members.

interestingly enough post 1990 when pledging was still allowed and it was allowed above ground. Times were different and the evel of respect you gave people who were also pledging was different. In the south, in which we all know still pledge, there is a level of respect and untiy in which you call any member in NPHC soror or bruh; because there is a level of respect. They o hard, so if you made it, whether it was your org or another you earned that respect of being called soror. Now a days its skater vs. pledgee...therefore if you pledge or joined another org you a skater and you d**n sure not my soror.

What are you talking about beyond that? I assume you're Fall 2007, so it's good for you to know that what you're saying is not entirely true. It may apply to some campuses pre- and post-1990, but that's it.

Soror, notice I used the personal pronoun I've / I in my response. I did not say that it does not happen. I was only relating my personal experience. I was not trying to say that others may not have experienced it.

I was called a soror as I hadn't even cross yet....I went to an event as an aspirant, and a Zeta gave me her camera to take pictures. After I took the pictures, she said, "Thanks soror, your turn to get in the picture"...OMG!!!! I was flattered, until I remembered that I was well out of place to be feeling good.....They thought it was so funny, and my "down to earth" sorors didnt made me feel bad, but they made me feel like it was okay.....I LOVE MY SORORS!!!!!
