I don't see why it wouldn't be true, getting mugged in a large city like D.C. isn't all that uncommon. I'm sure whoever the perp is would have done this regardless of the Zimmerman verdict, he was probably just being a smart-ass by saying it was for Trayvon.

I have seen stories in the past where someone white blames a crime on a black person, to only find out that they were lying!)

The only story I can think of off the top of my head is that woman (Susan Smith?) who drowned her 3 boys by driving her van into a lake. IIRC her claims of being carjacked by a black male were made to throw the police off, not as to set it up as a racially motivated crime.
