I think one of the things that makes a group a group of women a sorority is a common bond and love for something. So if that something is local history, music, reading, or anything else under the sun--a group of women can identify themselves as sisters.

Also, you can share a common bond without being a fraternity/sorority.
ETA: No one in this thread asked "what makes your group different," so I'm not sure what the OP is bitching about.
