Although auto-tune was not introduced until the late-90s, I consider the vocoder and talk box that Zapp and artists in the 1970s-1980s used to be an earlier version of auto-tune. Same point, different trademarked instrument.

The difference for me is that auto tune is done by computer, and I think takes less talent and work than the talk box used in the past. In the studio one may get the ability to get it right, but in person at the time, a vocoder or talk box had to be on point for a live performance. Hell, people don't even need auto tune, they can just lip sync and have less of a chance of being caught than Rob & Fab and C&C Music Factory stealing from Martha Wash.
