I so agree. DH and I wanted a small white shindig, and that's exactly what we had. We invited those family members we were close to, a few family friends on each side, and our friends. (MIL added a bunch of her friends to the guest list, but she paid for them.)
I once joked in front of MIL that DH and I were going to elope. MIL threw a tantrum worthy of a three-year-old.
To steer this thread slightly back onto topic... The fact that we were having a small wedding was a big factor in our choice of band. The band we chose was not only really good (they played at a friend's wedding and we all but booked them on the spot), they adjusted their volume to the size of the venue. If you have fewer than 100 guests, you don't need a band that makes Metallica sound like a bunch of monks observing a vow of silence. Our band played at just the right volume - loud enough for dancing but not so loud that you couldn't hold a conversation.
