Let your parents have their gala event. Afterward, have a great reception with the people you want. Everyone wins.

The marriage is the important thing. The wedding is merely an opportunity to bring together all of the important people in your lives and your families lives for one day. If the idea of your mom planning this event makes you physically ill, I think you need to step back and think about what is really important here: your relationship with your parents who are footing the bill for this soiree or getting everything your way and not having to put any money toward it. Like it or not, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I really hope you do feel better!!!
Oh, I wasn't completely stressed because of all the wedding planning. There's just a huge culmination of things. I have a debilitating disease that comes out of remission in times of high stress which requires hospitalization and steroid injections. I'm completely appreciative of the fact that they are paying for things...its more of the fact that eloping was seeming like a good way to avoid family conflicts and unrealistic expectations from my parents.

Since all of this has occurred, my parents have realized that their demands have been unrealistic. All I wanted was something low key with family there and not putting effort into something for their friends that I barely know. The majority of the planning is on hold and the focus is now my health and sanity.
