Yeah, but I think it's the exception in a number of ways.
First, as you say, the online petitions were only part of the viewer response registered at CBS. There were also the 20 tons of peanuts delivered to CBS Headquarters. Second, CBS said that the "digital" response was the largest they had ever seen in response to a cancellation. Which leads to third, the protest in that case was in response to the cancellation of the show, which is quite different from trying to get the show cancelled. I think Axid Angel is exactly right that Married . . . With Children provides a much better of example of how protesting a show may just boost viewership and help keep it on the air longer.
Protest the show too much and watch ABC/ABC Family advertising it by saying "see the show that has so many people talking," and sending the organizers of the protests fruit baskets every Christmas.
