Not to sidetrack the conversation, but I just ran across a very interesting book called
The Feminine Mistake (by Leslie Bennetts) that discusses this very issue. It talks about women who didn't work once they got married because they had a man to provide for them, and then something happened to their husbands (death or divorce) and they were left without the means to fend for themselves.
