UCLA SPRING RECRUITMENT
 

hey everyone! im interested in ucla's spring recruitment, but there are a few issues. im really interested in joining one of two houses this spring, but they are only doing cob dinners for recruitment. i know a few girls in each house and was wondering how i would go about trying to get invited to a cob event without creeping anyone out. im really friendly and outgoing, so i honestly have no problem just outright asking them for an invite, but obviously i dont want it to sound weird, desperate, or creepy to them. a few girls on juicycampus and collegeconfidential posts just said to outright ask the girls if you know them... but im a little hesitant about this since i dont know how they would react. if i were in there position, i would be totally happy to help a girl out- i just dont know if they would do the same.

also, if you dont mind, could anyone explain to me a little bit how cob dinners go? perhaps specifically at ucla? what are the expectations? i only know like 4 girls in each house, in one 3 are sophomores and 1 is a senior, and in the other i know mostly freshmen and sophomores. do you think this is going to be a detrimental thing? also, i dont know how to convey to the girls that i really want it without being overly obsessive- im a really cool girl and im social and im fun, im very into school and grades but i like to go out as well... i guess its just a little difficult for me to portray all of my personality in such a short period of time (and i definitely know what to discuss and what not to discuss!!!). sorry im going on and on! basically... do you have any advice?

if you know girls in each of the houses but don't want to outright ask them 'hey! how can i join though cob this semester" out of the blue why not meet up with them and tell them you are interested in greek life.. then ask them questions about their org:

what do you do?
how long is your new member period?

after a couple of warm-up questions throw in 'sound like something i might really be interested in... is there a way to join this semester?"

If you dont want to go through them at all, the Greek Life office would have contact info for the groups that are COR'ing. But I would recommend going through your friends, because I always got excited when my non-affiliated friends asked me questions or thought about joining.

Well, I happen to know a thing or two about UCLA, since I'm an alumna. Quite a bit has changed since I graduated several years ago, but I am also pretty familiar with the current set-up.

First - I suggest staying away from JuicyCampus, because it's not very productive, and you get a lot of vindicitive people airing their own issues on there. And let's be honest, everyone's trying to hype their own chapter and rag on the others.

Second - It's my understanding that 7 chapters will be participating in UCLA's semi-formal Spring Recruitment, and the other 4 are currently at total (or have, maybe, A spot open). By signing up with the Panhellenic office, you automatically get to attend all 7 chapters' first-round recruitment events. Is there any reason you aren't interested in participating?

Third - If you really do only want to consider chapters that aren't participating in this process, then you can at least use Panhellenic's Spring Recruitment as a conversation starter with your friends. Mention that you're thinking about signing up and ask what their recruitment experiences were, if they have advice, etc. That should be enough to signal that you're interested in rushing, and (normally) the chapter members will jump at the chance to invite you to a COB event. I wouldn't suggest being too pushy about it, though, because that can get awkward fast.

Fourth - It sounds like you know a good variety of women in each chapter, so I wouldn't worry. As long as these women are somewhat active in their chapter, they'll be able to give you a good word. As a general rule, the more active and better respected the member, the more others will listen to her opinion.

i'm in the same position as you mahdian..i wanted to rush kappa theta chi omega and pi phi..but all of those are NOT participating in spring rush..which sucks..but i think i'll still go ahead and do spring rush cause i'm interested in two or three out of the six..and i also heard it's a lot more difficult to get in sophomore year than freshman year..

I thought the same thing when I first read that.

When I first read "kappa theta chi omega", it reminded me of a chant that either AOII or ADPi sang during Derby Days. Maybe they both did it. In any case, it went like this.

A O II, Sigma Chi.
Ooo. Ahh!

or...

A D Pi, Sigma Chi.
Ooo. Ahh!

So now, I can't read "kappa theta chi omega" with out going...

I've long thought Sigma Chi Derby Days was the most brilliant marketing ever - all those sorority women just filled with love for Sigma Chi!:)

I almost included Pi Phi, but wasn't sure about the "Ooo, Ah" part.
