Question For Those Opposed to Capital Punishment Concerning Saddam Hussein

What are your thoughts?

I'm opposed to capital punishment because the American judicial systems (and probably all others) are flawed, and do convict innocent people.

Even though what happens to Saddam Hussein is really up to the Iraqi people, I'm thinking that he should be executed (only by the decision of the Iraqi judicial system) even if Iraq decides to prohibit capital punishment. The reason is that his living will probably cause more deaths. There are enough followers who may have visions of a Napoleanic return to power. I believe that this will cause continued suffering that could manifest itself in a protracted civil war.

I'm more concern about the Iraqi court system. Or should I say the lack of. Russ, do you know if Chalibi's cousin is still head of the court system? If it is, than I would question the legitimacy of it.

Good question, but I don't know.

Kinda brings up the old debate about whether to establish a international prison for some of these people, something that was talked about around the same time the ICC was being formed... sort of eliminating the whole martyred angle while providing a "safe" exile from which there is little chance of a return.

I think a Texas prison might be poetic justice at its finest.

Actually I did enjoy the suggestion that saw said hypothetical prison be placed in northern Greenland, the high arctic in Canada or even the Antarctic... :D

I think we should have just summarily executed him. He did what seemed appropriate for his culture and his position . . his real crime in a larger sense is that he lost.

These moral posturings that we use to punish the losers mock us all.

Let me put it another way. There is no way he can defend himself at trial and ever hope of winning, so whats the point?

Remember OJ James.

No...seriously...what if he wins his trial. I can see them pulling the "IF it doesn't fit, you must acquit" technique.
