The ultimate test in openmindedness is trying to remember that just as some people would like to lose weight, some people want to gain it and both are equally valid opinions and neither person "has it lucky" or "should stop complaining". Yes. *whew that was hard*
The article doesn't surprise me. Carbs aren't bad - junky foods is bad. It's just so happens that junky foods tend to have a lot of carbs.

My mother has the same issue - she drops fat the second she starts to worry about anything. (Thoughts to your dad though)....
