Is marriage really sacred anymore?
We've had quite a lot of discussion about gay marriage. Some are for. Others against. Good arguments on both sides. I personally am still on the fence, but ultimately, marriage is about love. Which brings me to the point of starting this thread...
Do you believe that marriages for reasons other than love (money, lust, neediness, citizenship) are as bad if not worse than gay marriage? Many marriages that originate from the above mentioned roots often end in divorce, which is also something that people have religious beliefs about. I feel that the way people get married nowadays shows a decline in our society just as much as some people believe gay marriage does. Discuss. |
I think people should get married for any reason they darn well feel like it -- who am I to say that someone's reason for getting married is wrong? It doesn't bother me if someone gets married for citizenship, neediness, lust or money -- I don't see how any of that is worse than, say, getting married because someone gets knocked up or staying together for "the sake of the children." I used to wish my parents would get divorced because all they ever did was fight and it was awful.
To me, marriage isn't sacred because I don't consider anything sacred. I also don't think that divorce is such a big deal -- if you're not happy, I don't see the point of staying married. It's not good for you or the other person. |

Marriage was never really sacred. I believe that the actual practice of marriage was far less sacred in centuries past than it is today. The idea of marrying someone for love is a relatively recent development. As I see it, the only use for marriage is to provide a stable environment for children.

Is marriage sacred any more? For many probably not-but it should be.
Sacred doesn't JUST mean "holy", it also means devoted to one purpose or being held in the highest esteem. Today, I am disheartened by many of the attitudes presented on the boards. Is nothing sacred anymore?:( |
