New Soror
Greetings Sorors and Sisterfriends,
I posted to this site once under the topic of famous speakers for graduation, but I was unable to properly introduce myself. I am a new member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated from Spring 2000. Since then, I have enjoyed every moment of my membership. I recently moved to a new location where I am working and going through the graduate school application process. Since moving here, I have had the chance to meet Sorors, but some of them, I hate to say, are not too sisterly http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. On the other hand, I have also met some really nice young ladies. The communication on this site seems to be very positive and I would love to contribute to the discussion. To all Sisterfriends seeking membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha this semester, good luck in your endeavor. Remember to be patient, respectful, and always conduct yourselves in a lady-like fashion. Also, watch what you say, how you say it, and who you say it to. Just a bit of advice given to me that I thought I would pass on http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. MsAnn |
Congratulations on your membership and welcome to GreekChat! Skee-Wee!

MsAnn, what do you mean by "some of the sorors were too sisterly"?

Congratulations and welcome,Soror...
Where are you from (school) and where are you living currently? |
Thank you Sorors for your welcome! Soror AKA2D, I graduated last year from Southern University in Baton Rouge. Currently, I am living in Oklahoma, but this is a very temporary thing. My uncle passed a couple of months ago leaving my aunt here by herself with no family. She wants to move back home in May, but the family was very worried about her staying alone for so long (she is extremely family oriented). To make a long story short, I am here so that she will have some family to be with until she moves. I can also help her take care of some small business matters before she leaves. She is also my godmother so we share a really special bond http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif.

MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY...
I'M FROM BATON ROUGE! I LIVE IN THE NO! EMAIL ME SOMETIMES... ALPHA THETA, FALL 91 (GRAMBLING)!!! IT'S A SMALL WORLD! |
Wow, it is a small world! This little town that I am in is definately no Baton Rouge. I have to get used to it being so quiet. When we got bored in Baton Rouge, my friends and I could always hop in the car and drive down to NO for the weekend. Boy, do I miss those days!

I am not trying to "call" anyone out... but did you graduate from SU's grad school, because there undergrad chapter did not have a Spring 2000 line? Maybe I am wrong, but I am sure I'm not.

They (Beta Psi) did not have a line in the Spring...
Ms. Ann said she became a member in the Spring of 2000. She did not say she came in through Beta Psi Spring 2000....there is a DIFFERENCE... Ms Ann..maybe you need to clarify... PLEASE READ AND REREAD THE POSTS THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING.... [This message has been edited by AKA2D '91 (edited September 22, 2000).] |
I realize what she said, and perhaps I should not have made the obvious connection. I do apologize I am a SF, not the police and thought that it seemed strange. Thought it is not MY business, clarification would be nice, (I really hope this does not turn into a SF trying to "handle" a member or sorority business) naturally as a new graduate many may assume (correctly or incorrectly) that she indeed was a member of Beta Psi.

I think it is a little too late for that...
Remember what they say about ASSuming... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif |
LovelyGirl,
This has happened to me so many times I kind of expected it again. If you reread my post, I said that I graduated from Southern "last year" meaning 1999. I have been out of college for a whole year now. A number of factors played a roll in my decision not to pursue membership at the undergraduate level, the main one being that I knew that I needed a certain GPA to get into the graduate school of my choice. Being a microbiology major with a minor in chemistry, this was no easy task. However, I was always active in my community not only at school, but in my hometown as well. I was cautious about the people to whom I expressed my interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha. This was easy because I have never been one to talk a whole lot about my business. Anyway, I loved doing things for my community like clothes drives, tutoring for kids, walk-a-thons, fundraisers....you name it, I was there. I was raised to be passionate about people and their well being, so community service was never a task for me but rather an enjoyment. Well, one day (this was after graduation), a Soror who has known me since I was a little girl and knew of my interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha, approached me about membership. You can only imagine my surprise. I was caught totally off guard. Anyway, in January of this year, I was extended an invitation to membership which I gladly accepted. No, I am not a member of Beta Psi (Southern's chapter), but I did become a proud member of Omicron Iota Omega Chapter in West Monroe. I made sure that my sponsor knew of my immediate plans to go to graduate school, but obviously they believed in my ability to also serve this organization. My line sisters and I stay in touch and the entire chapter is very supportive of my educational goals. My situation amazes a lot of people because it is rare that a young lady is extended an invitation to graduate membership so soon after leaving college. Like I said, it was a surprise to me, more like a blessing that had been in the making. Forgive me for not mentioning my chapter name in the first post. Maybe this would have helped to curve the notion that I was trying to "perp." I will be happy to answer any other questions you or anyone else may have. You can post them here or feel free to send me an email http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. |
Soror...I think you said WAAAAAAAYYYYY too much!
Anyway...I know I would not have given my entire pedigree to someone, especially a NON-Soror! You're good! All you had to say was your chapters name! PERIOD! He He! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
Thanks AKA2D for the support!
