If I made all the rush rules...

I would set up the computer system as such:

At the end of each round, PNM's would rank their sororites as they do in the PRUSH program. Say they visited 10 chapters, and the next round they will visit 5. They would mark 5 chapters as #1, then 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, in order of descending preference.

Then, before the chapters made their list of invitations, they would know where the PNM had ranked them. They would not see the whole list, just the number corresponding to their chapter. This step is what differentiates my system from the normal PRUSH program.

Now, the chapter that has 100 invites to give out and can't narrow it down below 110 girls can see which PNM's really aren't that interested in them anyway.

This would, in theory:
1. Prevent Suzie-adorable-rushee from getting invites to every single chapter and rejecting half of them, while Jenny-shy-rushee only gets invited to three parties.

2. Prevent small chapters from becoming gossip fodder when other rushees realize they ranked XYZ last and are going back there anyway.

Now, tear this apart and tell me what is wrong with it, because I am sure this has been thought of before.

that sounds very interesting, as I just found out that at the school where I will be rushing (west GA) they have a thing where if you have to cut a group with or with out interest. I think that is great.

breathesgelatin 08-18-2003 10:30 PM

Wouldn't this promote merciless cutting? I mean, wouldn't chapters just construct their bid lists on the first night of rush?

rainbowbrightCS 08-18-2003 10:33 PM

I am not sure about it excatly. I will be rushing next fall ask AGDLynn, she is an alum for AGD there. She can explain it in more detail.

breathesgelatin 08-18-2003 10:36 PM

My question was in response to DeltaBetaBaby, not you Rainbowbrite :)

I think the two types of cuts, those with and without interest, are pretty standard (we have them at my school, too!).

The issue with DeltaBetaBaby's rush system (I *think*) is that the 'top' chapters are just going to be able to make more strategic cuts--pinpoint the outgoing PNMs who really want them faster. I don't see how it will help shy PNMs out.

Also, I don't think it would help out smaller chapters that much--unless it helped them cut people that really don't want them. But if after the first night, 70% of rushees rank the 'bottom' chapter as #8 (or whatever the last number is), that doesn't help them much--they can't cut all those girls because those girls are going to get cut other places and will end up going back to them. Now it'll just be MORE humiliating for them, it seems.

rainbowbrightCS 08-18-2003 10:39 PM

Oh my misunderstanding. I agree with you on that. Wouldn't GLO just cut then girls that did not want them at round one?

Well I guess there is no perfect Rush system.

33girl 08-18-2003 10:41 PM

I think she's trying to prevent every house from inviting perfect-I-can-make-you-think-I-love-you-when-I-can't-stand-you rushee back. If a smaller sorority thinks "OMG! Zsa Zsa loved us!" and puts her at the top of their list, but then sees she rated them #10 out of 11 groups, they will quit wasting their time on Zsa Zsa and concentrate more on the other rushees that DID rank them highly.

There are girls I wish we could have cut after Meet the Greeks, they were that blatant about not wanting to be there. If you have to entertain someone like that it drags the whole party down.

Maybe I'm just jaded on this issue because I'm from the south, but aren't at least 85-90% of the PNMs going to rank the sororities according to their "traditional" rank? It might help the 2-4 top groups find out which of the "elite" girls that are going to go to the top tier groups prefer them among that tier, but it doesn't seem like it would help out much other than that.

But maybe if they knew for sure that those girls were interested in them, they wouldn't pad their party lists with girls they had no intention of taking unless they were under quota.

valkyrie 08-18-2003 10:54 PM

What if there is a group that nobody ranked above, say, 7 out of 10, and that 90% of rushees ranked dead last?

aephi alum 08-18-2003 10:55 PM

Interesting idea.

I would think that chapters would have a decent idea of which PNMs ranked them high or low based on how the PNMs behaved during parties. If a PNM acted bored at XYZ's party she probably wouldn't have ranked XYZ as #1...

I want the Sorting Hat.

pinkyphimu 08-18-2003 11:14 PM

so what if suzie q ranked aaa first and she was on the bottom of their list. she ranked bbb 10th (out of ten) and they ranked her first. should bbb cut suzie q bc she isn't intersted? i think suzie will end up with out invites to any chapter! let's face it, sometimes the chapters that have better rushers or perceived better reputations will be ranked higher by ALL of the pnms. everyone thinks that they can be a part of the "best" group on campus.

*note: i use the term best loosely bc i really don't think that what everyone thinks is best really is....or that it is for everyone.

rainbowbrightCS 08-18-2003 11:16 PM

I agree with you pinkyphimu (and carnation)

plus people change their minds after round one.
