You Really CANNOT Have it Your Way @ Burger King

'Special order' ends in upset in Hampton
Request turns ugly at Burger King

HAMPTON -- When a couple ordered fast food Wednesday afternoon, what they got certainly wasn't a happy meal.

Instead, police said, they got a bruising to go.

It all started when a customer noticed that a cook wasn't wearing gloves. Noting that it wasn't very sanitary, he mentioned that fact to a manager at the East Pembroke Avenue Burger King. The manager told the cook to don gloves and recook the order.

So far, so good.

When the couple got to their seats, they realized they didn't have the french fries they ordered. So back to the counter they went, where they told the cashier there. The woman, later identified by police as Chiquita Gennell Oliver, took offense and threw the fries onto the couple's tray.

That, said Detective Sgt. Richard Barger, sparked an argument and name-calling between the couple and the cashier. The cashier reached over the counter and took a swing at the female customer, hitting her in the shoulder. The couple in turn threw the fries back at the counter worker.

A manager intervened by refunding the couple their money and sending the worker to the back of the restaurant.

But Oliver wasn't finished, Barger said. She called her mother, saying she'd been hit by a customer.

The brouhaha might have ended when the customers left the restaurant, but it didn't, police said.

Minutes later, as the couple walked east on Pembroke, a fast-moving car pulled up to them and stopped near Skyland Road, said Cpl. Jimmie Wideman, Hampton police spokesman.

The 29-year-old man and his companion recognized one of the passengers - the Burger King cashier.

The four occupants - including 19-year-old Oliver and her mother - jumped from the car and began attacking the couple, Wideman said. One of the other passengers was a 17-year-old boy armed with a handgun.

While the three women from the car assaulted the 23-year-old woman, the gun-toting juvenile assaulted and robbed her male companion, Wideman said. The victims suffered cuts and bruises during the attack.

After the assault, the suspects climbed back into the car and sped away.

Police said there's no indication that any of the parties knew one another before Wednesday.

Early on Thursday, police arrested Oliver; her mother, Mattie S. Oliver, 37, both of the 300 block of Curry Street; and Shaquenta Ann Mczeal, 19, of the 2000 block of East Pembroke. All three were charged with two counts each of robbery, abduction and four counts of using a firearm in a felony.

The three women were in the city jail without bail Friday. They have a June 19 court date.

Detectives have petitions for the 17-year-old, who hasn't been arrested.

Oliver had been working at the Burger King in Buckroe for about a month and half, an assistant manager at the fast-food restaurant said Friday.

She refused to talk about the incident or Oliver's status. She referred calls to the fast-food chain's corporate office.

Attempts to reach Burger King officials at its Miami headquarters were unsuccessful.

WTF? All that behind some fries? Fast food folks are losing their minds. I have gotten into it a time or two with a worker. If you don't like your job, get up and do better!

That's some real shiznic!!!! Something like that almost happened to me when this girl at Blimpies was preparing my sandwich and dropped meat on the floor. The B@$ch had the nerve to put it on the sandwich like I didn't see her. I waited for her to finish prepare that sandwich, asked for the manager, and told him what she just did. There is no way you will do that crap to me. She actually tried to deny that, but I told him to look in the cameras and he will see. And she also was NOT wearing gloves!!

YUUUUUUCCCCK!!!

Oh yeah.... I was in Baskin Robinns and dude BLEW HIS NOSE before he picked up my cone to scoop my ice cream. When I told him to STOP, wash his hands and make me a new cone he had the nerve to say "I blew my nose in the tissue...not on my hands" He washed his hands but I was about to go off.

Repulsive

Disclaimer: Just my POV.

Again, people, why was one of "us" involved in this foolishness?

I have never worked fast food, and I can't imagine that it's anyone's dream job.

But if you don't get an education (bachelor's degree or higher) and acquire marketable skills, you are likely going to be stuck with gigs like that.

RedefinedDiva, I totally agree with you. If she was not getting out of her job what she wanted, then yes she should have never worked there. On the other hand, I have to stand up for all the previous past food employees. My first job was slinging chicken for Colonel Sanders. I worked that job from my sophomore year in high school until three years after I graduated. After I graduated, I moved on and started working for the County Courthouse as a Deputy Minute Clerk. I did not quit KFC because I liked the people I worked with and I actually liked working there. So it became a part-time job for me. Granted Ms. Chiquita Banana obviously did not feel the same way about her job. But let's be real, most people don't respect restaurant workers at all. Most places train their employees with the mind set that "The Customer Is Always Right".....NOT:rolleyes: However, if your job requires you to serve the public, you must have the personality to deal with the public. Now, I was a happy go lucky person and really did not encounter to many upset customers that did not appreciate my service:D . I was not perfect and if I messed up, I would have never gotten offended because someone called me on my mistake. The first thing is to acknowledge your mistake and then correct it. But sometimes the consumer takes things to another level and will not let things go. I remember one time I was working the counter and one of my team members made an honest mistake and once she realized it, she aplogized to the patron and this woman just would not let up on her. She told her things like, "I wonder how you would ever keep a real job if you can't take a simple order and get it right." She had the poor girl crying and I just looked at her and shook my head. Ms. Lady then decided to direct her anger towards me and I did not feed into her mess. I continued to smile and wish her a good day. Once she saw that I was not offended by her comments, she decided to leave. About two weeks later, while I was in court a case was called People of the State of IL vs. So-in-So. Guess who stood before me in court ;) as I took minutes on her retail theft case? Yes, miss I am so better than you cause you are serving me. Ironically, I was still serving her, but in a totally different profession and when she saw me she hung her head and would not make eye contact. With saying all of this, please don't think I was supportive of Chiquita's actions in any shape, fashion or form. Obviously she had no home training...her mom was only 18 when she had her. I am like CT4 on this one IWAMFW swing on me because she was having a bad day. I, for the most part, try to over look people's attitude...whether it is my supervisor's, co-worker's or someone in the street. These customers appeared to have done all the right things by getting the manager involved. From what I have read, the blame is all on Chiquita. But I just wanted to share a different side of things as being a worker and dealing with not so happy camper customers.
