Greek Terminology and APO

Hi Brothers,

I was sitting here thinking about how APO chapters pretty much adopt the identities of the campus they exist on, and how Greek terminology fits in there.

For example, as I've said before, my chapter has always had "pledge lines". But we never went through the formality of offering someone a "bid" as other organizations do, yet, I do know of some chapters that do.

So I just wanted to start a thread where we can list our chapter terminology and compare notes. I'll start:

Line/pledge line = pledge class, but ordered by height

Line mate = Line Brother/Line Sister (anyone in your pledge class)

Sands = Anyone who became a member of any Greek organization the same semester as you

Crossing (NEVER "Crossing over") = being initiated

On Line = Pledging

Line Dedication = same as Pledge Class Namesake

We probably have more, but I'll wait to hear others.

You know, I just learned the difference between a Pledgemaster and a Pledge Trainer last week. I always thought they were interchangeable until now.

We call sessions "Line Meetings."

we need new terminolgy

like
what do you call an ignorant neo?
or what do you call just a plain dumb bro?
what do you call a misinformation "preacher"?

I know what i would LIKE to call them but there have got to be some other names.

They are interchangeable.

The pledgemaster is in charge of the pledge program and training the pledges. Larger chapters may have to have additional people, and so might have a VP for Pledging or Pledgemaster over several Pledge Trainers.

Well, never heard many of your terms.

One thing I've found frustrating, is there is this kind of 'glo subculture' with many terms and pratices, but none of this is written down anywhere. Sort of all passes from word of mouth. Sometimes wish there was a "Handbook of Greek Life" that would explain all this stuff. sigh.

In my chapter, we don't have 'lines'. Each pledge class is given a greek letter (our first pledge class was Alpha, second Beta, etc). And they have their Pledge Class Namesake (Fall named by National, Spring by use). We do Big Brothers/Little Brothers and family trees and expect our pledges to know their family trees (other chapters I've encountered do this). We also give NIBs nicknames (done by their Big), but the little has final say so we don't give them something insulting. We also don't use bids as it seems to exclusive.

Some other terms we use:

Prospective- student who shows an interest in joining, but has not commented to the point of being made a pledge.

Neophyte- pledge who has completed their requirements and only has to be inducted to be a Brother.

NIB/Newly Inducted Brother- someone who has been a Brother for less then six months.
