Cinco De Mayo
Okay, this weekend many all over the country are celebrating May 5th. There are Cinco de Mayo sales in the stores/ coupons in the grocery stores. I guess I know the answer to this question, but I want to see how others feel about this. But, why is it that we don't see Juneteenth sales? We don't see coupons in the paper for "soul food"? (lmao) This morning I made sure I picked up products for making tacos that were on sale.
Don't think it's just hispanic people celebrating, the WASPs are in full effect at Chevy's, Cucos and other restaurants I passed this weekend. I guess they are taking advantage of the discounts/ sales/party atmosphere...  Even during the month of February, I don't recall any Black History sales/coupons. Why is Cinco de Mayo embraced more? Let's see what happens next month? Edit: I don't have a problem with Cinco de Mayo being celebrated. |
Pardon me for stepping into your forum. :)
Wasn't there a post a while back referring to some grocery stores that had sales in honor of Black History Month? I think it was related to people being offended at the products that were featured which have stereotypical connotations (such as fried chicken...). It seems like that would be akin to the Mexican food being on sale??? As far as people of all ethnicities celebrating Cinco de Mayo, here in Texas the celebrating is pretty widespread. And in June, Galveston is all about Juneteenth. I guess it just depends on the geography and culture. dzsaigirl |

I'm aware of the celebrations in Texas. If you look on the news or visit websites, it shows this weekend or today where it is being celebrated ALL over the country ("coast to coast")
Here in the NO area, the restaurants are out with all the fanfare, (even though it competes annually with Jazzfest), but it still occurs. I saw where Mexican Americans make up 12% of the population, like 35 million people. Chicken is always on sale. lmao http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/12039198/ I didn't pay attention to the thread when it was "alive", hence the "no reply" from me. If it's right or wrong, why is Cinco de Mayo "singled out"? (so to speak?) Why do the Mexican Americans not find it offensive? Why is it offensive? |

Here, the grocery stores will have slaes/coupons on "holiday" items all the time. But I will say they are advertise like any other sales. For example, you won;t see anything like" Cinco De Mayo Sale on taco shells" or "Black History Month chicken special". They know folks will "cut the monkey' on some garbage like that! The stores will just advertise the sale items on the front page like anything else. I guess they figure that you'll get the point.

Miss Multicultural Speaks...
As an original US born melting pot of "black", latina, and American indian. However, I am black through appearance. I would have to say I'd be offended by certain food sales especially since I don't eat chicken, chittlins, ham hocks, etc I do like watermelon but back to subject. I find that offensive. I, however, don't celebrate cinco de mayo. I'm not mexican and I don't have reason too.

I think that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated and embraced by people who are not Mexican for the same reason that people who are not Irish celebrate St. Patrick's Day, because it gives them a reason to go out and get drunk.
