Thoughts on high school sororities
 

I am a 14 year old girl that lives in a very southern part of Alabama. I was born and raised in New Jersey though. My high school that I will be attending has two sororities:the, "party sorority" and the "helpful sorority." I have already been asked to attend events including formal, (to have my name called out?) And many of the girls have suddenly taken interest in me. My mother, who is straight out of Ohio is completely against sororities and thinks they are all just about partying and drinking. But I am interested in at least going to a few events to see if I would enjoy this. Almost all of my friends havery alrealready decided which sorority they are doing because of what their older sisters chose. I just want to know who's right, my mom, who disagrees completely with high school sororities, or me, where I believe I should at least give them a chance

High school sororities vary greatly from one part of the country to another. Why not have a mother of one of the members have a chat with your mother? Preferably one she knows and respects.

Stay away from high school sororities (and fraternities).

High school sororities are also prominent in Arkansas, where I grew up. While the chapter of Delta Beta Sigma from my hometown closed over a decade ago, the chapter in the town where my sister now lives is extremely active. DBS hosts frequent events for philanthropy, and also hosts fun events for girls. Recently, they hosted a Princess Party for the children of the women who belong to Junior Auxiliary.

Whether or not to belong is entirely a decision for you and your mother. Typically, if it is a national sorority, as DBS is, the involvement of the mom is essential to membership of the daughter. I believe that the above advice is very good- have the mother of a current member talk to your mom.

This was very much my experience as a high school sorority member. I second the advise from others about having your mother speak to the mother of an active member.
