Can I transfer into the same sorority at another school?
Hi! I have a quick question-
I am currently in a chapter of a sorority at the current school I go to, however I have decided to transfer schools in the fall. I love being in my sorority, and I was wondering if I am allowed to transfer my membership to the chapter at my new school/how I do this? Thanks! |

I have to wonder, do many chapters even cover this in their fraternity education? I feel like I always knew about transferring and the possibility of affiliating with another chapter when I was in undergrad. I also knew a couple of the policies of other chapters on my campus in that regard. It's not because we had someone transfer in, either. It just was something we were all aware of.
I guess the question is, why are people not learning about this on the campus level? We've had a lot of questions like this lately. |
I would suggest asking your alumnae adviser - yes, it can be done. One of my sisters was a transfer from another campus. Bear in mind, there is a procedure to be done, so make sure you dot your "i"s and cross your "t"s. Good luck!

I totally agree with you 33girl. I think a lot of it has to do with an 8 to 12 week new member program. A lot of information in a very short amount of time.

I would like to add that in some areas it is "tricky" or "iffy" that a sister can transfer and just become a sister at the new school. I know that there have been numerous situations in the past where ladies will go to a less desired college/university (less competitive recruitment etc.) and pledge there with plans to transfer to a university in which the sorority is a top group. It was just common knowledge young women were doing this and I know sitatutions where the chapters had to put the clamps on.

Short answer, yes, though others have covered that. I just posted in another thread about a similar situation I was in, though I wasn't lucky enough to transfer to a school with another chapter. When I decided to transfer, there was a local at my new school that had the intention of joining KD (as evidenced by their name and what they themselves were saying) when they asked a bunch of sororities to present at their school. Long story short, they actually went with a different sorority around the time I started school there, and it's a good thing I started looking at them in advance because even if they did become KD, there would have been no way I would have fit in with those girls. So remember that you should definitely meet the new chapter and chat with them for awhile before starting any process as far as reaffiliating (except for information gathering from your own chapter, Nationals, etc).

I honestly don't think we learned about it during our nm education. Everyone was aware of it, however, because we had a sister transfer in from UCF.

To the OP, you can (as in, you are able) to transfer to another chapter of your sorority, but in many cases, your transfer must still be voted upon. The chapter may choose not to accept your transfer for various reasons (low Total, etc). You may want to investigate that part, too. |

This information shouldn't be limited to the new member/pledge period.
What's stopping senior members/local alumni from answering questions like these? |

Real question for NPCs, since this keeps getting asked: i know your orgs tend to be chapter-centric, but are yall THAT chapter-centric that youre unaware of how things work for other chapters, even as upperclass(wo)men? I would think, for example, if i was in an NPC at my alma mater (for example), that someone in my chapter (ideally, president or pledge educator) would know each local chapter's stance is on transfers. Not exactly written down like SOPs, but more like, oh the Alpha Beta chapter at State University is pretty open about transfers, but the Alpha Gamma chapter at City Tech College, they only take 5 a year during the fall semester. This would make sense regionally, through a regional or national officer even. I know im super lane-swerving, even in my school because my college has a high percentage of transfers. From what i've learned on Gc it seems like its par for the course in some university systems to transfer in after sophomore/junior year (i'm thinking the UT system, or Penn State, schools that have multiple campuses). Again, lane-swerving, but does it hurt to work together a little? maybe some of this happens already and im not privy. |
Can't speak for all, but our chapter covered transfers during the new member period. If you weren't thinking it would apply to you, however, you might not have noted it.
