Wanting to rush Spring 2010- as a Sophomore at U of A

Hey I just transfered to the University of Arizona this year from a community college and I didn't have transfer grades to rush. However, next semester I would like to rush but as a sophomore is there really any point? I also live off campus so I don't get the chance to meet a lot of people although I do know a few people in sororities. I have heard that as a sophomore at the University of Arizona there is almost no point in rushing because most sororities won't take you. Is that true? I really want to rush so if anyone could give me some advice that would be great!

The above thread is good. In short, it's not out of the question, but you have to be realistic that you will be automatically cut from some houses, and not let that upset you. Have your recs ready (I'm assuming they're important at such a competitive school), be NICE to EVERYONE and give every house a chance. Happy and nice count for so much more than young girls think. Looks are good, grades are great, but personality is everything.

If you have any good friends who have been through it before, maybe they can explain to you what the conversations are like so you can be ready. It really frustrates some girls that the same questions get repeated over and over again. It's just the way it goes with speed dating, and that's basically what this is. And by the way, this is a good life lesson. This is what job interviewing is like, and a good interviewee goes in anticipating certain questions and has a good answer ready... but that doesn't mean you rehearse a speech. Just think about how you would answer what's your major, what did you do over Christmas break, what do you do for fun. The questions are really benign but if you get caught mouth open, thinking about it, you'll be annoyed afterwards that you weren't ready with something witty.

Good luck!

Get your grades up! If your grades were so poor that they didn't qualify for recruitment, even if they do get over that point they're still going to be less than stellar, especially compared with everyone else rushing. Being a sophomore with poor grades at a very competitive school is not a good combo. And it's best that you have a VERY open mind and consider every group, or else you're lessening your chances even more.

Given the results from recruitment the last few years, I doubt that any groups will be doing informal recruitment in the spring. And if any do, it will probably be for just a few spots which will probably go to people that the chapter already knows.

If you really want to join a sorority, I'd suggest visiting the Greek life office and asking them who (if anyone) will be participating in COB, work hard on raising your grades, and looking for opportunities to meet greek women in your classes, thru CAT Walk, or other activities.
