Can someone maybe answer this?
 

Hi.
I'm new here and figured that this is where I need to come for help.
I am 35 years old, married, and have an 8 year old son. I just completed
my Associate's degree and I am continuing at a state university next month, for my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. The reason why it took me so long to get this far is that I have always had to support myself from 18 years old and on. I have had to provide a home for myself
and work full time in order to supprt myself. I have worked very hard these past several years and feel that I have just a little more to go. I will be attending full time and working full time as well. I don not feel like a typical 35 year old and feel as if my heart is very young. I am thrilled to be finishing up my undergraduate career and would also like to fully experience college the right way. I have always wanted to join a sorority, and wonder if this might be the time that I would be able to do that. I admire the sisterhood of sororities and would like to be a part of that.
I am proud to be attending a great university and would love for to make a sorority part of my life. If anyone can respond and tell me your thoughts and even what advice you might have , I have both ears open. Also, if there is a particular sorority that you might know of that might have a member/ members my age, I would love to find out which they are.
I will be attending UNC Charlotte and at this moment cannot recall the sororities by name. If anyone could shed some light here, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks!

PS: I posted thos thread on the recruitment forum and someone suggested maybe asking to be an initiated alumna(?).
Wouldn't I have to be a graduate as well as previously a member of a sorority?

Please refrain from asking any more questions until you've actually bothered to read the discussions on these message boards. Do your research. You will not be spoon-fed this information.

Excuse me? I have read the discussions and cannot figure out where to obtain such information. I do feel as if I am doing my research by asking people about things that they know about. I NEVER ask for ANYONE to spoon-feed me. If you do not want to offer help or information, why would you bother even posting a reply?

If you can't even bother to even figure out what an "active sister" is or figure out information and do your damn research on your own...you have no business being in a sorority.

Again, take heed of the advice already given to you in the Recruitment forum.

Seriously. How do we make it so that anyone who markets/suggests AI on the open forum to completely uninvolved/unconnected/unknowing people are immediately banned and the post deleted? There's just no need.

I always appreciate another's help. What I do not appreciate is rudeness for no reason. I KNOW that I am an asset anywhere I go because I am always willing to do what it takes to help a fellow human being. Shame... that is not the case with everyone.

Alumnae involvement is a great part of my life and I would highly recommend it. And except for the snottypants comments above I think you will find several national GLO's who would love to have you. Every one has a website and I'm sure a way for you to ask questions about the process.

As far as what you do or do not know, I think it's completely unrealistic to expect her to know all the lingo, especially when the lingo changes over time and varies by campus and part of the country.

An "active" is a collegiate member who is actively participating in the college chapter. She is in college and in good standing with the chapter (grades, financial, etc.). This is as opposed to an alumna who is a member of the organization but not an active member of the college chapter. This is the group into which you would initiate. My sorority initiates alumnae into a special chapter, so you are not affiliated directly with a college chapter. But I think this varies widely by sorority.

Best of luck to you. Disregard the snarkyness. Unfortunately the reputation of sorority girls being mean and bitchy comes from real people and is just dumped on the rest of us.

You realize the OP is from 2008, right? I doubt she's still hanging around.

ETA: The OP was also given good advice in another thread she started, so there's a reason for the responses in this one. Don't be so quick to call people bitches when you don't know what's going on.

Do you plan to sponsor the OP for alumna initiation into your sorority?

Just wanted to point out that things are different among different councils and can even vary between different orgs. We shouldn't assume that the poster is only interested in sororities within a certain council. In the NPHC for example, an active member is a financial member, can be undergrad or alumnae.

That is 100 percent true. I know in my fraternity the terms active for undergrads is discouraged. This is because we expect all brothers, undergraduate or alumni to be active in the fraternity.

Ditto for us -- you're a collegiate brother or an alumnus brother.
