Rachael Ray ad pulled as pundit sees terror link
Yes, this is as ridiculous as it sounds...
Rachael Ray ad pulled as pundit sees terror link Malkin claimed scarf similar to those worn by murderous Islamic extremists Dunkin' Donuts pulled a television spot featuring talk show host and Food Network personality Rachael Ray this weekend after a Fox news commentator associated it with terrorists. In the ad, Ray is wearing a scarf that Michelle Malkin said in her nationally syndicated column resembled a kiffiyeh, Middle Eastern garb that is "popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24860437/ There is a photo in the story of Ray wearing the scarf, which happens to be black and white PAISLEY with a fringed edge. It's nothing like the "garb" Malkin is speaking of, other than it being black and white! Pitiful that Dunkin Donuts pulled the ad. Wow. Terrible. Cute scarf RR!
|
Seriously? Are we THAT hyper sensitive these days??
|
Who cares. Rachel Ray sucks out loud. I would love an increase in not being able to see her on television.

And the term "hyper" may not cover this-what is the next level up? What is next-a black dress? |

Yeah I agree. Really ridiculous reason for removing the ad.
|
Can't they just digitially alter the scarf?
|
1. It looks more like a Jewish prayer shawl to me (Other than the color being black not blue).
2. A men's scarf? Hello, women were black or dark colored Hajaibs in Islamic countries! Not those types of scarfs! This is sooo stupid! |
I would so do Rachel Ray

Khaki jackets! Khaki jackets!
I think what we really need to watch out for are those khaki jackets. We all know who wears them:

I'd be fine with the scarf if it was on Giada. |

That scarf reminds me more of the ones I wore in middle school and high school than anything else. Hello 80s!

From the story itself: Urban Outfitters, a trend-setting U.S.-based clothing chain with more than 119 stores in North America and Europe, sold "anti-war woven scarves" as part of its spring 2007 line. But after criticism from Jewish and Arab groups online, alternatively for implying support for terrorism or trivializing a freedom struggle, the item was pulled from shelves in January 2007. Now, the trend has spread to urban style. BET and MTV R&B favorites like Omarion and Chris Brown have worn kuffiyehs in recent months, its political meaning less and less apparent. Politically minded rappers have worn kuffiyehs in the past, but their political leanings indicated an understanding of the symbolism. Mos Def, for example, has been seen in a kuffiyeh, but he has been vocal about Palestinian issues in his music. "Politically conscious rappers like Common and Mos Def are hip to the Palestinian cause," said Swedenburg, the Arkansas professor. "It doesn't lose its political significance altogether. If Lupe Fiasco is promoting it, I don't think he is just being fashionable." It's clear the kuffiyeh is increasingly commercial in hip-hop fashion, even if some rappers understand its Palestinian symbolism. Urban Outfitters quietly put an $18 black and white, tasseled item in its Spring 2008 line. This time, it's called a "Houndstooth Desert Scarf." |
