Do you donate to your alma mater?
Last week the Social Sciences department called my parents home (where they think I still live and where I happened to be at the time) to try to get me to donate money. I chatted with the guy for a bit but did not give anything.
When I was still in school I decided that if I became filthy rich I'd buy myself a building or school on campus. At the very least a Greek Row off campus! Other than that I haven't felt the urge to give money to a system that has doubled tuition in 8 years but has not changed the student workers pay at all. Do you donate to your school? Where did you graduate from? How long ago did you graduate? How much do you give on average? My answers: Do you donate to your school? Heck no! :) Where did you graduate from? UC San Diego How long ago did you graduate? 8 yrs  How much do you give on average? nada |
Do you donate to your school? Yes!
Where did you graduate from? Southeast Missouri State University How long ago did you graduate? Class of 99 How much do you give on average? $50 or $100 when they are having yearly donations. Sometimes more than that. |
I feel I'm constantly "contributing" to the support of the Cal State and UC schools as a taxpayer. I get those calls from the Foundation, and so do my parents, almost 20 years after graduating.
I do try to hire grads from my alma mater, and I do offer internships (paid and unpaid) to students at my business. I do give money to the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation, and I feel pretty good about it, because I know exactly how they use the money, and they operate in such a way that very little of my donation gets eaten up by admin/fundraising expenses. :) |
I went to a private school from K to 8th grade. They called me a few days ago looking for donations. I graduated from there in 2001, and I'm in college now. I politely told her I have to pay for groceries and stuff, so it isn't really in my budget now. Do they really expect a college student to donate? I love that school, but it's not do-able right now.

Do you donate to your school? Not at this time
Where did you graduate from? Iowa State University How long ago did you graduate? 2001 - 7 years ago How much do you give on average? None, though hopefully that will change when we have more money to play around with in our budget. I was an annual member of our alumni association for a while, but I've let that lapse. I'll also answer for the husband: Do you donate to your school? Occasionally, but not annually Where did you graduate from? Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology How long ago did you graduate? 1998 - 10 years ago How much do you give on average? When he gives it's been $100-200/year mostly earmarked for athletics. Again, he hasn't given in a while either because it's hard to fit it in our budget, but we might be able to give some this year. |
I went to two schools, so here goes:
Do you donate to your school? Undergrad: Yes. Grad School: Let me quote my favorite TV crackhead, Whitney Houston, when I say, "hell to the naw!" Where did you graduate from? Undergrad: Brown University; Grad School: Columbia University How long ago did you graduate? Undergrad: 5 years ago (this weekend!); Grad School: 3 years ago this week How much do you give on average? Undergrad: $200/year; Grad School: nada I know that Columbia is a great school, and its undergrad, engineering, business, journalism, and all other schools are world-class. I had a terrible time in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and I tell anyone who will listen. |

University of Hawai'i at Manoa in beautiful Honolulu, HI Class of 2003, 5 years ago this week Not a cent for now. I do donate to my high school alma mater. I graduated in 1997 and only started giving a few years ago, about $100 a year. I get my name in the annual giving report! I have two classmates who've passed away since graduation and several of us made extra donations in their memory to be used toward scholarships for incoming freshmen. Tuition's rapidly approaching $10K a year now, so whatever I can give so that more girls can attend, I will. |
Two schools:
Do you donate to your school? Not at this point, but probably in the future. Where did you graduate from? Boston University for undergrad, I'm currently in law school at the UConn School of Law How long ago did you graduate? 2003 for undergrad, I'll graduate law school in 2010 (I'm doing a 4 year evening program because I need to work full-time) How much do you give on average? Nothing right now, but I plan on giving to both schools when I graduate (probably UConn more than BU). For BU, I have degrees from both the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Communications, but I'll probably just donate to the College of Communications. |
Do you donate to your school? I have in the past, but not lately. I also joined the Alumni Association as a Life Member about a year after getting my MA (I went to the same school for undergrad and grad).
Where did you graduate from? Stephen F. Austin How long ago did you graduate? 1992 for undergrad, 1993 for grad How much do you give on average? In the past, about $100/year. Nothing lately; with two boys in sports (lacrosse and football with cross-country to come), I am finding better uses for my money. Plus, both boys are looking at either their father's alma mater (MIT) or other schools. |
Do you donate to your school? No
Where did you graduate from? Emory University How long ago did you graduate? 2003 - 5 years ago How much do you give on average? - $0 I went through Emory on a scholarship, but Mr. Fleur de Lis paid the full $30+K per year, so he doesn't think they need any more money from us. They also started contacting us so often it's getting really annoying. He's more open to contributing to his grad school, Purdue University, I think because he was there on a scholarship. I contribute regularly to Kappa and InterVarsity, which I was very active in during my college years. |
Do you donate to your school? No. Considering that I attend grad school there now, I think the tuition I pay now will suffice. Where did you graduate from? Kent State University How long ago did you graduate? I got my undergrad degree in 2006. How much do you give on average? - $0 |
Do you donate to your school? undergrad, yes
Where did you graduate from? Penn State University How long ago did you graduate? *mumble fumble mumble* years ago How much do you give on average? I'm a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and typically donate at least $100/year, sometimes another $50 or $100 to my college of study as well |
Do you donate to your school? Occassionally
Where did you graduate from? Muhlenberg College How long ago did you graduate? 10 years How much do you give on average? Somewhere between $25 and $100. |
I donate in the form of getting one of the University license plates. A portion of that annual payment goes to the school.
Eastern Michigan University 21 years ago, 1987 I think it's $15 a year. |

Someday, when I have Bill and Melinda Gates money, I will probably aim to have a specific fund dedicated in our (my husband's and mine's) name for off-campus housing and laboratory equipment/animal facilities. But, we would be doing that in our 60's. Also, I will be donating to another 2 HBCU's--Bethune Cookman-College and my parents Alma Mater, Fisk. Also, someday, I will also be donating to the Dr. Richard V. Moore Center down the street from BCC and the nearby Daytona Beach Methodist Church. I will also give to my home church in San Diego and donate under a new AKA EXO perpetual trust funds for the Debutante Ball. I will also donate under a new AKA DUO African American literature Library funds. My folks have inquired about LLC formation. I would like to develop a liaison and MOU between dental apprenticeship program to my father's office. And have my father's office to be a dental residency program at major Dental Schools during the summer. My father's office directly impacts health disparities populations. ETA: Some our funds will go to my IL side in Georgia to build up that church, also. In fact my MIL would be an EXCELLENT executive director. |
1) Nope, I plan to donate to my undergrad school. As for the law school I go to, they charge $1,000+/credit hour, which in my humble opinion is ridiculous for a T4 school. After I pay off my student loans, they'll never see a penny.
2) University of Central Oklahoma; Oklahoma City University in 2009. 3) '03, I took a year off and now I'm in a 4 year program because I need to work during school. I finish law school next May. 4) We'll see. During the time I was at Central Oklahoma, they were really serious about improving their overall image. If the school makes itself worth donating to, they'll see above-average money from me. |
Do you donate to your school? Absolutely and Absolutely Not
Where did you graduate from? The Ohio State University (undergrad) and Ashland University (grad school) How long ago did you graduate? 1984 and 1990 How much do you give on average? approx. $1000/year plus lifetime membership to Alumni Association, plus football tickets, plus parking passes.... (can you guess what is worth the most); Nothing -- I might if they would respond to an email to provide a password |
Do you donate to your school? Not yet... they're still benefiting from my tuition payments.
Where did you graduate from? Christopher Newport University How long ago did you graduate? 2008... 6 days ago. :D How much do you give on average? Well, for the last 8 semesters, thousands. Now... my fiance (another CNU grad) and I will figure out what we have in our budget, because we do plan to donate. |
Do you donate to your school? Yes
Where did you graduate from? Ohio University How long ago did you graduate? A long time ago How much do you give on average? Varies. About $50 per solicitation. Sometimes more for special projects or purposes. Largest was $450, i think. |
Two schools:
Do you donate to your school? Nope. I don't plan on doing so in the future either. Where did you graduate from? University of Maryland (didn't graduate, just left), Mount St. Mary's College, California How long ago did you graduate? I left Maryland er....19 years ago? I graduated from Mount St. Mary's 11 years ago. How much do you give on average? Nothing I do plan on donating to my graduate school after I get my Masters. I'll probably donate about $200 a year, maybe more depending. |

Do you donate to your school? yes-but I designate the money to go towards Greek Life (we have a very unsupportive administration) How long ago did you graduate? 15 years How much do you give on average? $50 |
Do you donate to your school? The school where I got my AA, defiantly as I know how they spend their money. Their scholarships go directly to the students and their are tons! They don't go to pay for stupid buildings...My upper level school no way! I didn't like the way they spent my tuition money while I was in my undergrad! Why would I give them more money now? I am not happy with the way my alma mater focuses all its energy on two colleges and leaves the others in the dark in regards to scholarships and academic awards. If I become rich some day (I guess I will have to marry rich as I am a teacher! lol) I would most likely endow a scholarship for Student Government Senators, Transfer Students, and Upper Level Education majors.
Where did you graduate from? St. Petersburg College and the University of North Florida How long ago did you graduate? Class of 2005 and Class of 2007 How much do you give on average? SPC, Lifetime Alumni Membership, and occasional gifts to the SPC Foundation for the annual scholarship drive, UNF, $0! |
