How many teachers are on GC?
I've noticed quite a few people on GC are teachers. Just curious to see exactly how many and the subjects/grades taught.
I teach 7th grade English as a Second Language. This will be my 2nd year teaching at this grade level. I have taught 1st grade (4 years), 2nd grade (4 years), PE (k-6, 1 year), and Remedial Reading (1-3, 1 year). And, even on the long days when the kids are acting like little punks, I still love teaching. |
I teach fourth grade. I have taught third grade for two years, and this upcoming year will be my third year teaching fourth grade.
|
I'm a former high school teacher. My B.S. is in Journalism & my M.S. is in Education (exceptional education).
I started off teaching Varying Exceptionalities classes (English, Social Studies - all 9-12), and then ended my career teaching journalism (newspaper & TV production). I taught for 9 years, then just got fed up with the whole system...and left. I loved working with students - even the delinquents - but I can't stand administrators & other teachers! |
I used to teach middle school science for about a year and a half.
Then I substitute-taught while I was in library school. I am now a children's librarian at a public library. So I do quite a bit of educational activities. |
I'm married to one. She teaches band, orchestra, yearbook, and newspaper at a local charter high school with the mission of getting 'traditionally underserved' kids to college (they're an AVID school if you know what that means).

KT Snake, I was the AVID coordinator at my last school so I know what you mean. :) |
I started out as a horticulture professor but now teach college and secondary Spanish. The kids haven't changed much over the years but boy, the parents have...they'll be in there in 2 seconds screaming if their darling gets a 98 instead of his usual 100. Even on the college level. I haven't had to deal with parents actually harassing college profesors yet but some of my colleagues have.
My husband teaches secondary science. Two of my daughters who are already degreed in other fields may go into teaching. |
I am an elementary teacher. I usually "loop" from first to second grade with my class. I am getting ready to start my 17th year. Wow, I can't believe I have stuck with it that long. Like many of the other posters have mentioned, working with the children is incredible. NCLB and administration -- well that's another story all together!

Dont We all teach in some form?
I dont know why anyone would want to be a Teacher under todays restraints!:o Teachers Shalt not according to The Supreme Court of The USA!:( I admire anyone who is a Teacher in todays world!:) |
Teaching was very tough indeed. You are under scrutiny all the time. Somebody is always criticizing you for the pettiest little things. Even if you did everything right.
But my worst memory from teaching did not have to do with the students. My first principal made my life impossible. I admire teachers very much. However, I cannot go back to it- at least not at this point in my life. I can tell librarianship is my true call. |
I currently teach 7th and 8th grade life and earth science.
Next year, I'll be up in high school, teaching College Prep Biology and Ecology/Marine Science. I can't wait! This summer, I'm teaching Oceanography in Hawaii. |

But my worst memory from teaching did not have to do with the students. My first principal made my life impossible. I understand about principals. I had fantastic principals: supportive, great. Until 2 years ago. My new principal apparently had a problem with male teachers. Out of the 10 male teachers in our building, 8 left at the end of the year. All of us were constantly being told that we were not running our classrooms properly - without being told what we were doing wrong or how to correct it. Each one of us were replaced with female teachers. But, now I am enjoying teaching middle school. They can be tough, but I think that middle school kids get a bad rap. You just have to let them know what you will and won't put up with and stick with it. |
I was a long-term substitute teacher for two years, with my longest assignments being sixth grade, fifth grade, first grade, and fourth grade. I then became an aide for two kindergarten classes for about a year. I then made a quantum leap and became a Site Director for an afterschool program. So now I teach college students how to tutor elementary school kids.
Without my experience in the trenches as a sub and as an aide, I'd never have the cred to be a site director. |
I am a Kindergarten teacher, this will be my third year. I have always loved children and always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I hear what everyone is saying about parents and administrators...sometimes they get in the way of your teaching!! :D

REALLY ??!! You got to move up to HS ??! I'm happy you got what you wanted ! :D |
I'm a 5th grade teaher. :D This will be my 2nd full year teaching.

I haven't taught school since I was pregnant with my first child (who's now 21 and graduating from college), but I have taught everything from kindergarten to 8th grade. I've taught science, english, literature, remedial reading, remedial math, first grade, and kindergarten.
Every time I'd go back to get another degree, they'd change the parameters-with my BSED, I could teach anything in grades K-8. With my masters, it was K-6; with my sixth year degree, they squeezed it down to PreK-4th; AND my class was the class that just missed the cut-off for Lifetime Teacher Certificates! We just couldn't win!:( |
I'm an NYC public school teacher. Currently I teach Pre-Kindergarten in the Bronx. We have our stepping up ceremony & it's going to be really hard to say goodbye!
|
Yes, I'm a Teacher and I have been for several years!:) I enjoy teaching kids to read and improve their scores in reading on the proficiency tests! I get results if I do say so myself:D I've had expereiences with children from k-8 grades. Ive taught middle school 4th and 5th, 1-2 and currently 2nd grade. I've been self-contained and departmentalized! it has it challenges but never a dull moment! I actually will contact my kids over the summer to make sure that they are reading so they can keep their skills up!

I will soon begin my first year teaching 8th grade language arts at a charter school in Florida.
I, too, get annoyed with fellow teachers and administration (and that's just from one semester of student teaching!) and don't know how long I'll stick with the profession. Plus, as much as I enjoy teaching, there are a lot of other things I want to do as well. |

Used to do special ed (RSP program) but finally left after burning out from lack of support from staff, principal, 1 student being held for murder, & parents that give death threats.
Off topic, I have 2 sisters that teack K & 3rd grade in Los Angeles. They carpool to work & were carjacked at gunpoint today when they left their school. :( |
I will begin my first year of teaching (Kindergarten) this August in an inner city school in Miami. I am ultra motivated and super excited at the chance to make a difference in the life of young children. I have a challange ahead of me, but my goal is to give my students a foundation to last them their entire school careers!!
:D |
I'll be starting my 4th year teaching this August.
I teach 10th grade World History, both regular and honors classes. This year I'll also be teaching out beginning Peer Assistance class, which teaches basic skills to do conflict mediation and giving kids someone their own age to talk to. I can't wait for that class! Ktsnake....I am a part of our AVID site team, and have a lot of AVID students in my classes. Those kids are awesome to have in class. |
Two of my older daughters--one has a master's and one has a bachelor's--are probably going to do alternative certification to become teachers. They're in critical fields (Spanish, science) and they want to be employable wherever they live, which they would certainly be in this state. They also want to have the same breaks as their future children would have.
As teachers, my husband and I have mixed feelings. Teaching is satisfying and does allow you to be with your own kids but there are those psycho parents and administrators to deal with. And there's always some unmeetable standard that some government official has dreamed up that makes everyone crazy....cough cough, No Child Left Behind. Wonderful idea, impossible to attain. |

Are You having a Moment of Pause? Teachers cannot touch or make children feel uncomforatble or they can be brought up on charges and dismissed. So now, You have become a Teacher of Students?:o Why don't You ask some of the real Teachers on site if I am wrong. Ergg=Arrg? |

What are you talking about? When did the Supreme Court of the United States say that? I teach Sunday School which certanily does not make me a real teacher, however, half my sorority sisters are teachers throughout the Midwest. |

Here is a web site that explains which states allow and which states do not allow teachers to physically punish children: http://school.familyeducation.com/ed...ent/38377.html |
Here We Go!
New teachers started in my district this past Friday (July 28). All teachers begin tomorrow, August 2. Kids start back on Aug. 9th.
Because I teach ESL, my students are in my classes for 2 periods. So far I have 12 students in 1st/2nd periods, 6 students in 4th/5th periods, and 2 students in 6th/7th periods. Good luck to all teachers on GC. I hope everybody has a great year.:D |
I'll be doing my student teaching in the fall in 3rd grade. Lucky for me, my cooperating teacher is awesome!
|
I'll be student teaching this fall with some rowdy rural 5th graders....can't wait! :D
|
My dad is starting his 40th year teaching Social Studies next week. 39th year coaching boys tennis and 17th year coaching girls tennis.
My brother is starting his 10th year teaching AP Chemistry this year. I did 5 years of computer education at the 6th and 7th grade level. This year I am also starting my second year teaching 6th grade Language arts. I also co-coach Science Olympiad, am Technical Theatre Director and also co-sponser Drama Club. We start school Monday and kids start wednesday. |
First day of school was this past Weds. It was going to be stress-free. Room was set up the week before, lesson plans already written for next 2 weeks. And then: A brand new teacher insisted that she could notteach her classes without 2 dry erase boards and her overhead projector facing the side wall in the room. So guess who had to tear down and move their entire classroom the day before school started. Oh, wait, that would be me.
The rest of the week has went okay. I only had to hand out one detention today. Stopped a 7th grader running in the hallway. Asked him if he remembered how to walk. He said yes and began to goose step and give a Nazi salute as he proceeded down the hall. Parents fully backed me up. Gotta love 7th graders. |
I am getting ready at 37 ( oh my what am i thinking) to go back to school and get my teaching credentials in elementry education.
|
I teach Reading Intervention for grades 6-8 and I also teach art for grades 7-8. :)
|
I would love to hear some of the stories that you teachers have in making a difference in the lives of your students. I'm also curious as to what drew you to teaching?
