Ohdollface's Rush Story (Spring '06)

Hello everyone!

I am a freshman at a small private college...Rush week has just begun! I just got back from my first meeting, and that is not all the girls have in store for us today! I have to meet up with my group again tonight and then go to rounds.

There are only four npc sororities on campus... I will nickname them using my favorite ice cream brands: Haagen Dazs, Ben & Jerry, Carvel, and Edy's

Haagen Dazs: There is a very small number of these girls on campus. They just recently came on my campus, and are still considered a colony.

Ben & Jerry: My friend is the treasurer and she has told me a lot about her sorority way before rush started. I adore her and can't wait to get to meet her sisters.

Carvel: I hardly ever see them wear letters around campus but I have heard that they are a chill group of girls... and half of them you would never expect to be in a sorority. So I am eager to meet them as well.

Edy's: They are the main reason why I decided to rush but now I am interested in the other sororities as well. I've met a good amount of the girls on campus and at a get together last semester.

The fun begins later this night... I looked at my schedule and I'm going to be so busy! Homework and studying is definitely a concern!

Carvel & Ben & Jerry.....yum!

Good luck and just remember, have fun!

Mmm... Ice cream, I love them all! Good luck, have fun and just remember to keep an open mind, you'll never know where your fit may be. You probably heard this like 1005496 times already but it's so true! ;)

Best of luck hon... I added you to This list

Update!

Tonight was exhausting! I saw all four sororities and wow... My opinions have totally changed!

Haagen Dazs: They are really nice girls but we didn't click at all. They were very quiet and the conversations were forced. When there were intense conversations it would be between the sisters only.

Ben & Jerry: ...not like i expected. The girls were sooo nice, friendly and welcoming! I had intense conversations with the girls. They seem very active on campus (which is what I am looking for). I had an awesome time! and was disappointed when I had to leave.

Carvel: They're a hilarious group of girls. I can tell that they are extremely close but when I talked to them about activities and service projects they rambled a lot... and were very unclear. There were smooth conversations going but I didn't feel a connection

Edy's: I saw them first and was very nervous. Questions stumbled out of my mouth but after the ice breakers I was having casual silly conversations with the girls. I started to feel at home when it was time to leave :( oh well...

Tomorrow my group is spending time with Ben & Jerry and Carvel

Duchovnysfan 01-30-2006 01:39 AM

Sounds like your first day went very well! Hope the rest of recruitment is just as awesome. Good luck for the next round!!

AGDee 01-30-2006 07:13 AM

I would keep in mind that if Haagen Dazs is still a colony, they would have NEVER done this before either and may be very nervous. I'd see if they loosen up some as the week goes on. It's possible that few, if any, of them ever participated in formal recruitment as a potential new member either.

alum 01-30-2006 11:05 AM

Good point from AGDee. It sounds as if things are going well. Have fun!

GtownGirl98 01-30-2006 12:24 PM

Having been the new group and having rushed for the first time (while never being rushed), I totally agree with AGDee. Please keep an open mind about them. They maybe new and small but if you want to be apart of a group that needs you and wants you, then the colony may be the way to go. They will be doing things that no other chapter on campus will be doing over the next few years.

I am a total pro-colony supporter. So I'm a little biased.

Good Luck with this week.

I totally agree. I also was a colonizing member (and I never went through recruitment) so when we did rush for the first time, it was harder for some of us because we had never experienced recruitment from either side. Joining a new chapter gives you experiences and chances that you may not get with an established chapter.

Good luck :)

ohdollface 01-31-2006 11:17 PM

A lot of people say that you change your mind a lot during rush and they're right! Sunday night I loved Ben & Jerrys but now... I love Edy's. I have a feeling those two will be my top choices. I am honestly afraid to make Edy's my number one choice because I've realized that they're really popular (and of course an amazing group of girls); A lot of the rushees want to be in it. I guess I'm just afraid of getting disappointed.

alum 01-31-2006 11:54 PM

I hope you find your home!!!!

KSUViolet06 01-31-2006 11:58 PM

Do not base your rankings on whether alot of girls want to be in a chapter. You could potentially end up somewhere where you might not be happy, just because you thought your top choice was too popular to put first, and you were scared they wouldn't bid you.

Jill1228 02-01-2006 05:59 PM

ohdollface, heed Jocelyn's advice...she is a very wise woman!

ohdollface 02-02-2006 12:21 AM

WEDNESDAY NIGHT

OMG! It's almost over... girls are already asking questions about pref night and bid day... and it's making me anxious

Well tonight was okay... I'm starting to not have as much fun as the first night... All the rounds have been "so so" except with Edy's. I always have sooo much fun. So if tomorrow night stays the same and i get an invite back they will definitely be my number one.

I overheard one girl saying "I like the Edy's girls but I can imagine them talking behind my back" I think that is pretty harsh. Sisters would never do that... right???

Oh and I was wondering about this... A girl from Carvel approached me and asked me what sorority I am interested in. Are rushers allowed to ask me that?

They shouldn't. If it made you feel uncomfortable, that would be something to speak to your Recruitment Counselor (Pi Chi/Rho Chi/Rho Gamma/etc) about. They will deal with it accordingly.

Not to put you off, but yeah, they would. You get bad seeds in every group, and unfortunately some like to do things like that regardless of whether you're a sorority sister or just some random person off the street. It's just like anything else--you can't expect to like and be friends with everyone you work with, and you also can't expect to like and be friends with everyone in your sorority. However, if the people you like outnumber the people you don't get along with, you're doing good!

Have fun and good luck during the rest of rush! :)

alum 02-02-2006 08:37 AM

I hope you get what you want!

GtownGirl98 02-02-2006 10:25 AM

A wise LC once told me that you don't have to like or even love your sisters, you just have to respect them.

Good luck!

ohdollface 02-03-2006 12:15 PM

INVITES TO PREF NIGHT!

I got 3 (out of 4) invitations!

Edy's, Ben & Jerry and Hagaan dazs!

Jill1228 02-03-2006 12:26 PM

I can go to as many as I want to! But I decided to go to Edy's and Ben & Jerry because they are the only sororities I felt a connection with... I'm so excited! I normally take a 2-3 hour nap after my last class but I'm too anxious to sleep! :D

Oh, and bid day is tomorrow!

We're hoping you won't either..I can't wait to hear what school and sorority abouthwhich you have been keeping anoymous!

AznSAE 02-04-2006 10:48 AM

sorry to intrude. but, wouldnt it be better for someone to call and tell you that you didnt get a bid?

what if someone called but you never got the message and you show up thinking they were going to offer you a bid? that would be more embarrassing i think.

good luck!

At my school, PNMs were not called ahead of time. We distributed bids by having the rho chi take each member of her group aside individually and give her her bid or tell her that she didn't get one. And a bidless PNM would then have to walk out, past the other waiting PNMs, usually crying. :( Same thing for invites.

</hijack>

ohdollface, hope you don't get the dreaded phone call.

The girls know when they will be getting the phone call and,as far as my school went, noone left their room just in case.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

yep, same here. Even when girls were going to the bathroom, they handed their portable phone or mobile to someone else...just in case. it was HORRIBLE when I went through rush and got the phone call. I even expected it and it sucked. I was glad that we got calls as opposed to told in person.

(PS, PNMs, Rho Chis get realllllllyyyy cranky when you don't give us a phone number you actually use...just a helpful hint. :) )

carnation 02-04-2006 12:37 PM

When I rushed, we had to wait in our rooms and hope we didn't get "the call". Thing is, everyone on my floor was an upperclassman so we knew the chances of the phone ringing were higher than usual.

The phone rang at the end of the hall. We all screamed and no one wanted to answer it. Finally someone did and our counselor chirped, "You all got bids! Just thought you'd want to know!"

We were torn between joy and killing her because we'd been told that a phone call meant someone wasn't getting a bid.

ohdollface 02-04-2006 12:50 PM

IT'S BID DAY!!!

Okay ladies! So I didn't get a phone call... (although my roomie kept calling my phone to freak me out)

First I'd like to reveal the sororities:

HAAGAN DAZS= Sigma Sigma Sigma

EDY'S= Kappa Delta

BEN & JERRY= Alpha Sigma Alpha

CARVEL= Alpha Chi Omega

I only put one sorority on my Pref Card... and am now a proud new member of KAPPA DELTA SORORITY

:D :D :D

MTSUGURL 02-04-2006 12:52 PM

I was told in person, and honestly I think my rho sigma was more upset than I was.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
