What country would you live in...

To what countries have you traveled, and of those, which could you see yourself living in if for some reason you had to leave the U.S. (or Canada, if that is where you live)?

I've been to:
United States
Canada
Mexico
France
Germany
Switzerland
Austria
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Iceland
Ireland

Of those, I would choose Ireland. Nothing beats the good old U.S.A., but if I had to leave, that's where I'd go.

AchtungBaby80 10-28-2005 06:57 PM

I've been to:

England
N. Ireland
Scotland
France
Germany
Luxembourg
Austria
Italy
Switzerland
Holland
Belgium
Mexico

I don't know where I'd pick of those, but it'd definitely be one with national health care. Probably England.

Aotearoa...the land of the clouds...New Zealand. For some reason I feel like my entire being has its origins in Aotearoa.

Even if I didn't have to leave, I'd live there. I remember standing on a cliff overlooking the marae and thinking that I'd take this over the U.S. any day. For real.

aephi alum 10-28-2005 09:39 PM

Settle in for a long list. :D

I've been to:

United States (duh)
Canada
Mexico
Venezuela
Brazil
Argentina
United Kingdom (specifically, England and Scotland)
France
Germany
Austria
Spain
Portugal
Italy
Switzerland
Hong Kong *
China
Thailand
Singapore
Malaysia
and probably a few more countries that I'm forgetting...

* I've visited Hong Kong twice, once when it was still part of the UK, and again, a couple of years ago, after it had reverted to China. I have visited China outside of HK as well (Guangzhou).

If I had to leave the US, I'd choose either Canada, the UK, or Singapore.

LightBulb 10-28-2005 10:02 PM

I would also live in Ireland. :)

ETA: I live in the USA and have visited Canada.

navane 10-28-2005 10:04 PM

I have traveled to:

Mexico
Hong Kong/China
United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales)
South Korea
Belgium
Germany
Poland

If I had to live somewhere else other than the US, I would chose England. Of course, since I used to live there, my answer should come as no big surprise. It's as if a piece of my heart is especially drawn to Somerset (a county in southwest England). I don't understand why; but I sometimes feel compelled to return. I must say, it's a strange feeling. I wonder if it's similar to what OTW described....

.....Kelly :)

Here is a similar link about countries other GCers have traveled to...

I've been to:

Austria
Belgium
France
Germany
India

And I'm going to Ireland next month.

I plan on living in another country eventually, if I ever raise a family I'd like to settle down in Austria. I think I'll do more traveling throughout India if I get a chance though-maybe get a job & stay there for a few years.

I call the middle east the sandbox b/c I can't say where. Its just easier that way.

_Opi_ 10-29-2005 01:44 AM

^ hmmm, interesting name for the middle east..that is, if we were to overgeneralize the entire region as being a "sandbox"

Anyway, places where I've lived for more than 3 yrs:

Saudi Arabia
Somalia
Canada
United States

visited:
Italy

I would live in Canada, just because that's more "home" to me..

moe.ron 10-29-2005 06:50 AM

Asia:
Thailand
Singapore
Malaysia
Indonesia
Sri Lanka
Japan
China (Hong Kong and Maccau)
Taiwan

North America:

Canada

Middle East:
Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirate

Europe:
Switzerland
Germany
Austria
UK
Greece

Africa:
South Africa
Nambimia
Mozambique
Lesotho
Swaziland

'Cause it's a whole lot easier to say than 'an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia'! :D

Been to (other than the US of A):

Germany (courtesy of the USAF)
Luxembourg
Venezuela
Mexico

KillarneyRose 10-29-2005 11:14 AM

I haven't been to many places outside of the US but from what I have seen Grand Cayman looks like a pretty awesome (if expensive) place to live.

I will open up a tiki bar on Seven Mile Beach and invite all the GreekChatters to drink for free (which will no doubt bankrupt me) :)

Sister Havana 10-29-2005 11:28 AM

Countries I've been to:

Canada
Mexico
Cayman Islands
Jamaica
Bahamas
Switzerland (brief layover, would like to see more of it!)
Israel
England

Of those countries, if I absolutely had to leave the US, I'd move to England. I loved it! Plus winters wouldn't be too horrendous, no language issues, and there are enough things I really like and can get there and not here that it would be an even tradeoff. Oh yeah, and there's national health care. :)

The air is unbelievably clean there. I can't imagine living elsewhere, though. I love the good old US of A.

CutiePie2000 10-29-2005 08:35 PM

I would move to AUSTRALIA and not look back, baby.

Make mine a double. :)

DeltAlum 10-29-2005 09:17 PM

England, specifically London. Great city.

Besides, I believe it was Winston Churchill who pointed out that, "We are separated by a common language."

queequek 10-29-2005 11:36 PM

Italy.

ADqtPiMel 10-30-2005 11:59 AM

Ireland

Tom Earp 10-30-2005 01:25 PM

WOW, thought I had been to a few:

England, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Itialy, Mexico, Texas!:)

Would Love to go to Australia and New Zealand where one can live on the Ocean and drive 2 hours to to ski. Well in the olden days.:(

Also love to see Canada as have LXA Brothers there I could sponge off of!:D

Austria would be the one I would pick. Londoners just dont wash like We do! Well it seemed to Me!:(

Talk a common language, talk to a Cockney and see how close it is!

But Londoners were very warm people in all of the Pubs I visited!

Ah Scotch Eggs and a Pint of Lagar!:D

Xylochick216 10-30-2005 03:47 PM

I've been to the following:
Australia (lived there for 6 months)
Canada
New Zealand
Malaysia

I could definitely see myself living in Australia. If I had the chance, I'd be back there in a heartbeat. In fact, most of the time I'd rather live there than here. I miss it a LOT.

TheEpitome1920 10-30-2005 03:48 PM

My dream is to live in South Africa. I've never been but I've done a lot of research and it seems like the place for me.

My parents lived there for a few years when my dad was on active duty.

I have never gone anywhere, because I am boring and from the midwest. ;) I really want to travel though, so once my boyfriend starts getting vacations we're going somewhere fun.
