Kashi Go Lean

Anyone who eats this stuff...is there a way to fix it (warm it up/let it sit with milk in it, etc...) so it doesn't feel like you're chewing on uncooked rice and fiber tablets???

MoonStar17 10-07-2005 09:35 AM

I usually let mine sit in the milk while i go feed the kitty and make coffee.. this way its a little better, not so hardf and carboard-y.

sometimes ill add a few raisins.. that helps.

lately ive been eating the go lean crunch which i like better than the regular go lean.

sometimes ill skip the milk and put a fat free plain yougurt in the bowl and put the cereal on top. light and fit fruit flavored yogurt is good too.

hope that helps :)

I second the yogurt idea, but make sure you're using yogurt that doesn't have High Fructose Corn Syrup. HFCS is a sugary syrup that does nothing but add calories!

Optimum Slim

If you can find it, pick up a box of Nature's Path Optimum Slim. It has the same amount of fiber and protein as Kashi Go Lean (although with fewer calories), and it tastes much, much better.

Why would you eat something that tastes like uncooked rice and fiber tablets?

RedRoseSAI 10-07-2005 12:24 PM

Personally, I like it. Oh, you might want to check out the Bear Naked granolas, too.

Seriously. Especially considering that Kashi makes better-tasting cereals (Strawberry Fields, etc.) that have fewer calories.

AlphaFrog 10-07-2005 01:39 PM

Well, I thought I would try it and I was really looking for ideas not to waste the rest of the box. It's not really that bad tasting it's the texture that kills it.

xo_kathy 10-07-2005 01:48 PM

The Heart to Heart is really good!

I'd opt for mixing in yogurt - softens it a bit and adds some flavor!

Ms. MysticCat calls it "Kashi Twigs."

Yes, but they're not as high in fiber/protein, and they have way more sugar than Go Lean. The thing about GoLean is that it helps you stay full for longer, therefore, you eat less in the long run. That's why they market it as a "weight management" food.

I ate some of that Kashi Strawberry Fields once and after I got over the sugar shock, I wanted to eat again an hour later. Your mileage may vary, of course. :)

I actually like the taste of it, so I'm not much help. The Go-Lean crunch is also really good.

Honeykiss1974 10-07-2005 10:23 PM

Kashi Heart to Heat (the ones that look like cheerios) is the only one I like. It does taste good too.

I love the Go-Lean crunch. It's so good, especially since I can only have low sugar, high fiber cereals.

Yeah -- the thing is, if I tell myself I'm eating a bowl of cereal and then I'm not eating again until lunch in four hours, I won't, even if I get hungry (or I will have some fruits or veggies to fill up -- not more cereal). I'm usually running around all the time these days anyway, so sometimes I don't even have a chance to eat when I need it . . . If you're the kind of person that will be looking to start eating again as soon as you get hungry, then another cereal might be a better choice.

Still, a smaller portion of a cereal you actually LIKE, paired with fruit or other lower-cal snacks, is always a better bet than forcing yourself to eat something you hate the taste of but eat just because it's healthy.

That said, there isn't really a radical difference in the sugar content between Go Lean and Strawberry Fields (6 g versus 9 g) -- they are both pretty much smack in the middle of the sugar range for breakfast cereals, much higher than, say, Cheerios but lower than the sugar-packed stuff like Frosted Flakes. The major difference is the fiber.

Definitely. I even find it good as a snack. I think I'm weird, though, in that I like the taste of the Go-Lean.

Munchkin03 10-08-2005 12:07 PM

If you're going to have it with yogurt, buy the Greek stuff. It's pretty much pure yogurt w/o sugar. You can drizzle a little honey on it to make it sweeter if you must.

AchtungBaby80 10-08-2005 12:24 PM

I agree with the putting yogurt on your cereal...it's good that way! I'm one of those weird people who actually like the taste of plain (non-sugary) yogurt, but I've heard people say that even though they didn't like it at first they got used to it after a while.

I looked at the Kashi cereal in my neighborhood grocery store, but I never tried it because it's hella expensive in there. If you're looking for a cereal that's healthy for you that doesn't taste like tree bark, why not try plain old bran flakes or something? I usually buy the store brand ones because I like them, but if you want some with a little "flavor" you can get the Kellogg's Complete (or whatever it's called--it's in an orange box). They're not bad at all.

alternative

Bananas sliced up in milk make cereal really good and last longer / be more filling... I sometimes do it with cheerios. Put a few banana slices on top, and when you finish those and the cereal, slice up the rest of the banana and eat that in the milk. Yummy!

Re: Yogurt

The first time I tried fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt, I didn't know you had to stir it up. Ugggh. Shudder.

AlphaFrog 06-20-2006 09:24 AM

Bumping this up because after experimenting with all different kinds of Kashi stuff, I have found some good stuff.

The Go Lean crunch is good with yogurt (thanks for the people who said that). The granola bars are ok, but a bit tough. I like the Heart to Heart ok, but it was a little plain. I have never found the Strawberry Fields anywhere around me, but my normal store just started carrying the Cinnamon Harvest, which I tried for the first time today - that's what I'm talking about. It's a little higher in sugar (but not too sweet) but still has some good nutrition..and they're softer then most other Kashi stuff. I think after long last, I have finally found my cereal.

xo_kathy 06-20-2006 11:33 AM

I loves me the Heart to Heart. I think it's perfect!

Unfortunately, I can't find it too often in the area we just moved to. However, they do have a new one with bran flakes and bluberry clusters. Mmm, mmmm good! The blueberries make the milk taste yummy! I wasn't a fan of the Strawberry Kashi, but the blueberry has different flakes and the fruit is better.
