On Saturday I picked up "The Coldest Winter Ever" by Sister Souljah. I started reading it at 6pm, and stopped at 9pm. I started back reading it on Sunday at 7am and was finished by 4pm, that is how good it was. What made it so good, everything. I'm a little late on reading this book, so you may have already read it. If you have not, I would say pick it up next.
------------------ Peace KL |
I finally, picked up "Beyond Our Mother's Footsteps" which is the sequel to "Sister Secrets". It was much easier to follow but still a lot of characters.

I have been trying to find Sister Secrets and the other book written by the same author since this summer and I have yet to find either of them! I recently received the book by Sister Souljah by mistake from a book club that I am in, I was about to send it back...is it really good? Because if it is worth it then I will keep it!
Right now, I am trying to read For the Love of Money, by Omar Tyree...it's the sequel to Fly Girl...it's moving kind of slow and I really am just not feeling it yet! |
Yes, THE COLDEST WINTER EVER is very good. It's so good, because it's so realistic. Sister Souljah has a way with words, and everybody knows somebody that acts like Miss. Winter.
READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miss. Mocha Miss. |
I had to request the bookstore order "Beyond.." because they were out of stock. So if you got to B&N or one of the other chans, it shouldn't be a problem.

Redemption Song by Bertice Berry literally gave me a chill when I was reading it.
Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson, MD is a good self-evaluation book. The main premise of the book is helping the reader identify how s/he deals with change. |
Read Any Good Books Lately?
Sorors and SFs,
I am in the process of reading the book "Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class," (the title is self-explanitory therefore I won't give you a summary) and I am really enjoying it. I was wondering what good books you all have read recently and what makes them so good? The Negotiator Delta Sigma Theta Mu Alpha 3 SP 00 |
I also just bought Beyond our Mother's Footsteps for my b-day (Dec 13), and like Mccoyred, I had to special order it too.
|
I am in the process of reading this book called Remembering Slavery. (maybe its an old book to some) Its actual interviews with slaves. I like it. Its very informative. I am always on a quest for knowledge about any and everythin especially my folks. Its sad to though some of the things bring tears to my eyes..................

i'm always reading, but the latest book that i read is called Mama's Girl by Veronica Chambers. It's about the mother - daughter relationship and the problems that arise therein. It was very good and it even had me teary eyed at times.
|
The book is edited by Ira Berlin, Marc Favreau, and Steven F.Miller. Published in conjuction with Library Of Congress.......UM probably be easier to look for it by the title http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

For those of you that read the book "Fly Girl" which i believe is by Omar Tyree there's a sequal called "For the love of money" have any of you read it yet? |

I have read "For the Love of Money". It was okay. It was kind of slow compared to "FLy Girl" ------------------ Peace KL |
My mother hip me to that book. I am like you, I read that book until I finished it..When a book is really good, I will stay up until I finish reading it. I was like that with "In Search of Sisterhood", by Soror Paula Giddings. Enough said...

I am out of school and have about 3 book already to start reading.. I agree with the other Soror/SF who are reading "For the Love of Money"..it is slow...How about I meet Omar..He is fine, and of course married..After I finish that book I will be reading "An American Dream", my moms got it for me, she said it was in the Essence as a book to read, I also have Nelson Georges, "Woman Short"..and I might slip in that new one by E.Lynn and friends..Some of the book I did read early this year that were pretty good were: This Just In, (Soror) Yoland Joe, Written in Red Ink, Passing, Not a Day goes By (Ok) I expected a lot more. When I go home I will see if I see what other good books I have to advise about... ------------------ 22-IN-F99 MISS P.R.I.S.S. UNIV OF SOUTH ALABAMA |
i have to say that the most interesting book i have ever read was Wild Seed by Octavia Butler. it is about an african man/spirit who is trying to build a master race of people with special abilities when he meets an african shapeshifter.
it sounds far fetched but it is an attention grabber. check it out!! |
I have read all of Eric Jerome Dickey books and they are addictive. Don't shy away from Milk in My Coffee if you pick it up. Some points struck a nerve with me. Finish the book you will be glad you did. For those who also love his books, the new one will be out in July.
Our Kind of People is a very interesting look into a world some people are convinced does not exist. But the author is obviously biased to two organizations in my opinion. Not enough to make me stop reading though. For people interested in reading slave narratives I strongly recommend "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl". |
I read one book by Octavia Butler, Kindred, have you read that one? If I remember correctly it was about a Black Woman who is going between two different time frames.. Slavery and the 70's, the trip was she would go experience something trumatic and would wake up in a different era! Check it out if you have not already read it...

Oh boy when I saw this forum about books, I just had to reply. It's me Divinedst who hasn't been to GreekChat since the summer and I forgot my password. I absolutely didn't feel like going through the trouble so this is my new handle.
Eric Jerome Dickey's books are definately addictive http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. TimelessDST just stated that he has a new book coming out in July. Please keep me posted on that one. So far I have read all of books. He has this style where you will just be up late at night just reading. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif ------------------ DST Silent Passion #48 Alpha Xi Chapter Spring '99 South Carolina State University |

What's the name of that book? Has anyone seen anything new by Tina McElroy Ansa? I think she is a great author. So far I've read "Baby of the Family", "Ugly Ways", and "The hand I fan with" Am I missing anything? For those that haven't already, you may want to check out these authors. I have read at least one book by each of them and I enjoyed them. Connie Brisco, Rosalyn McMillan, BeBe Moore Campbell, Walter Mosely, Bertice Berry, Anne Rice, and Nathan McCall Here are some books that I have read that were alittle different then my usual selections but I thought that they were interesting "Coming of Age in Mississippi" by Anne Moody "Mama Day" I believe it's by Gloria Naylor. This one was kind of tricky but ended up pretty good. "Tell me I'm dreamin" by Eboni Snoe. It's kind of slow at first but ends up interessting. "Incidents in the life of a Slave Girl" by Linda Brent This one is a narative of a slave fron the 1820's to the 1840's.. I had to read it for a class but I really enjoyed it. READ UP LADIES!! hey y'all!
I just finished The Maintence Man by Michael Baisden (I know, I'm late, sue me http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif) I breezed though it in 4 hours. I didn't really like how most of the female characters were written as a little flighty, but then I know how I can be sometimes when I'm wrapped up in someone. I'm almost in the middle of Tryin' to Sleep in the Bed You Made by Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant. I had to force myself to put it down at 2 this morning so I could get some sleep (and was late for work too, teehee). I'll let y'all know if I feel the same after I've finished. Coldest Winter Ever is also sitting on my shelf, waiting it's turn to be read. I'm also planning to pick up the anthology Got to Be Real by Eric Jerome Dickey, E. Lynn Harris, Colin Channer & Marcus Major. Happy reading and Happy New Year! Kelli added on 12/30: I just finished Tryin.... I have 5 words: LOVED IT!! IT'S THE BOMB! -K [This message has been edited by 12dn94dst (edited December 30, 2000).] |
I had almost forgot about Walter Mosley. I read his entire murder mistery series. Some call it the Easy Rollins series because that is the name of his central character. Denzel Washington played Easy Rollins in the movie "Devil in a Blue Dress", the movie was good, the book was better. Definitely read the books in order.
I will keep everyone posted on when the Eric Jerome Dickey book is set to hit the shelves. |
Greetings all,
not that I have all that much time for pleasure reading http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif, but I am enjoing the "Left Behind" series about the end times. It's great! It really does show a realistic interpertation of the book of revealation. (ps, Wednesday the 27th was my 21st birthday..I'm legal!!!) |
Gina-Lynn HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!
Doesn't it feel great to know that even if you don't want a pint of Jack Daniels that you can still go to the store and buy some LEGALLY!! Just promise not to name any of your children after any of your favorite drinks! remember An alcoholic is someone you don't like who drinks as much as you do. On another note.. I've heard of the "Left Behind" series before...who is the author? |
Hello Sorors and Friends,
I have been away for a while but reading is never something that I can depart from. A lot of the books previously mentioned are excellent and I agree. I read For the Love of Money by Omar Tyree and just as I expected I DID NOT LIKE IT. Omar Tyree is still full of himself. The only thing good about the book was the poetry. Here are some books that I have read recently that are noteable: 1. Details at Ten by Ardellia Garland (Yolanda Joe's new pen name for her mystery writing) **EXCELLENT 2. God Don't Like Ugly by Mary Monroe 3. Damaged by Bernadette Y. Connor 4. Not All Dogs by C. Kelly Robinson 5. Sasha's Way by Scott Jenkins (the plot is off the hook although the writing/editing needs major work) 6. Picking Up the Pieces by Sungee (again writing/editing needs major work) These are my most recent reads. BTW: Terry McMillan's NEWEST book came out yesterday: A DAY LATE, A Dollar Short on sale at Media Play!! [This message has been edited by CrimsonTide4 (edited January 15, 2001).] |
I am bringing this back to the top for all of the readers out there and for those of you who are getting ready to form the CYBER BOOK CLUB.

Thanks! For bringing this back to the top.
I just finished reading Blackgammon by: Heather Neff. African-American who stay truthful to themselves. Self-discovery Quote:

I love reading. I have a small book collection in my house. The last book I read was Men Cry In The Dark by Michael Baison. That book was excellent. The following are books that I have read that I recommend.

If you have any suggestions on which one I should tackle first, let me know. Eric Jerome Dickey Liar's Game Friends and Lovers Sheneska Jackson Caught Up In The Rapture Blessings Terri Woods True To The Game Brenda Jackson True Love Hunter Hayes Shoe's on the otha' foot Kimberly Lawson Roby Casting The First Stone E. Lynn Harris, Eric Jerome Dickey, Colin Channer, Marcus Major Got To Be Real I suggestion everyone who likes to read check out http://www.blackexpressions.com *NYPrincess* |
Souls of My Sisters
Dawn Marie Danials and Candace Sandy When Chicken-heads Come Home to Roost Joan Morgan Both books are wonderful for the enlightenment(is that a word?) of black women. Especially young black women. |

As far as Shoe's On the Otha Foot...read it if you want to get a good hoot out of someone's poor writing skills. I mean DAYUM. This child could not develop a plot if it her life depended on it. The characters and storyline were shallow, the writing SUCKED, and there were more than a few grammatical and spelling mistakes throughout. Seriously, I don't come down this hard often, but this is SUCH a waste of money. I don't know about the collab with EJD, Marcus Major and the rest, but I just finished Good Peoples by Marcus Major - it's his "solo" debut, so to speak. It was okay... I'll give him a little time to develop. Worth reading though. |
Quote:
Now I love EJD, love him love him love HIM. My favorites in order 1. Friends and Loves 2. Cheaters 3. Sister, Sister 4. Milk in My Coffee 5. Liar's Game #3 & #4 were tied for me but it is without a doubt that Friends and Lovers was, is, and will be my favorite. The dynamics, the writing, My favorite passage (dang it IDEAL08, I need the book to do a direct quote http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif ) is No matter how good of friends we are, only one of us can be the pallbearer at the other's funeral. Simple truth but it smacked me in the face. I thought Marcus Major's first effort was okay. His new book will be out this spring but his short story in Got To Be Real was really good and would make a good novel so I can find out what happened. I am currently reading Grace F. Edwards mysteries and although I am not a mystery reader, NOW I AM http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |

You'll should read Men Cry In The Dark by Michael Baison. When I saw the movie "The Brothers", it reminded me of the book.
READ IT! It is great! I am going to start on Friends and Lovers tonight. Thanks for the recommendation, Sweetest Diva *Princess* |

Marcus Major's 2nd novel just hit bookstores - it's called "Four Guys and Trouble". I read the back and it sounded like it might be the bomb.. but it's only in hardback so far, which is $24.95. And I'm in college. And poor. So I guess I'll have to wait, but if any of y'all get it, tell me what you think! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif
