The Coldest Winter Ever

I stayed up until quarter to 2 this morning reading that book! It was great. MamaBuddha, I saw on your BP page that you read it. What'd you think? I think it was a great story, especially since it's Sister Souljah's first novel. Has anyone else read it? What do you guys think of the story. It made me THINK. And hey, did you pick up on the AKA sorority call? What was that all about?

I think it would make an excellent movie.
Delroy Lindo would make a great Santiaga
Mekhi Pfeifer should play Midnight

I am loving this book.

I have also read that book. I thought that it was pretty good. I noticed the blatant display of irritation at a certain sorority call You should read her other book "no Disrespect". It is soooooo good. I finished it in a matter of hours.

CrimsonTide4 07-28-2000 04:30 PM

Hello all
i read this book and january and it left me chilled to the bone it was so good.

This book is scheduled to become a movie through the efforts of sistah souljah and jada pinkett. I agree on the Mekhi Phifer selection.

I recommend this to a lot of my students and they all come back in love with.

sankofa15 07-28-2000 07:04 PM

I am actally reading it for the second time. This book was great. I recommend it to everyone. But don't you think the movie will take away from a beautiful nove... We all know what happened to How Stella Got Her Groove Back. It just really took away from the story. Just though that I'd throw that in....

CrimsonTide4 07-28-2000 08:57 PM

oh definitely, there is always something on the big screen that is left out. Look at all of John Grisham's books when they become movies, they cut out people, conflicts, etc. However, as a teacher, i always tell my students that THE BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER.

Think of it like this, the movie reaches an audience that might never read the book. The movie sometimes sparks further interest to actually pick up the book and see what else happened.

I started to read this last winter, and I never stopped... not even for food! I was totally entranced. There was too much power for this not to pique the interest of the movies.

carebear 07-29-2000 10:57 AM

I tried to find this book in the bookstore because I want to read it and they didn't have it http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif well I get it sooner or later...I'm currently reading the Left Behind Series which is outstanding...it makes you think!

humblebumblebee 07-29-2000 10:12 PM

I LOVED this book!!!!! I read it in like 2 days. I did pick up on the AKA call (when they were going to the rapper's "house"), but I didn't appreciate the reference- for obvious reasons. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I too heard that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith bought the rights to make it into a movie. I can totally see Lisa Nicole Carson (from alley McBeal) playing Winter. But she may be too old. If that is the case, I wouldn't mind the part... to help Will out of a sticky situation of course. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif But I am interested in how the movie will be made. Will Winter be a narrator like in the book, or will the story be told in 3rd person, I wonder.

P.S. Am I the only one that was upset Winter didn't get Midnight-- or should I say Bilal?

thatgirl 07-29-2000 10:32 PM

I was surprised that they didn't get together, but I wasn't mad. She was way too shallow for him. It was great.

humblebumblebee 07-30-2000 03:20 PM

The only problem I have with Aaliyah playing Winter (aside from the fact she can't act) is that physically she doesn't fit the part.
But I'm thinking Micheal DeLorenzo would be a purrrrfect Santiaga.

meeks 07-30-2000 05:50 PM

I thought this book was excellent! I wanted to pace myself so that i would not read the whole thing in a day like usual but i could not help myslef. I think that as far as a movie is concerned, somone new whom we have not seen yet should play the part.

Hi, I was thinking of Aaliyah (Romeo Must Die). I am thinking of her based on that role. Who ever they go with should be young nad have some versatility.

If anything Lisa Nicole Carson could play Winter's mom or Sistah Souljah (if S S chooses not to be in the movie).

I am sure we will get a lot of undiscovereds in this movie.

Eclipse 07-31-2000 01:05 PM

Carebear,
I am just starting Tribulation Force, book 2 of the Left Behind Series, and I must say they are great!! They definately make me think! I even pulled my Bible out on several occasions to cross reference stuff!! Wasn't that scene with Nicholae 'anointing' (for lack of a better word) his staff and what happened immediately after the scariest thing you have ever read!! Have you heard that they are in production for a movie right now?

Yes Left Behind is currently in the making of a movie (Praise God!). You can visit http://www.cloudtenpictures.com for more information.

Girl I can feel you on the cross-referencing...I've started an in-depth study on the things that are to come...using every resource possible...getting different views and seeing where people stand.

This book series is awesome and I encourage EVERYONE to get it.

NubianEssence 07-31-2000 08:39 PM

I've also read the Coldest Winter Ever and I must say it was an awesome book for cover to cover! I also just got finished reading Straight No Chaser: How I became a grown up black woman by Jill Nelson and I must say it is on point. Every black women should read it because we have all shared the same moments. Blessings to all!

Is it Still Going to Happen

I was wondering if anyone knew if this book was still going to be made into a movie. I remember reading this book about three years ago, and reading in a magazine that it was going to be made into a movie, but I never heard anything else about it.

class&elegance 07-04-2003 12:18 PM

Jada Pinkett-Smith was on Oprah about a month ago and she said that they were still going to make the movie. But first, it has to be re-written as a script . Also, I think that Jada may be playing Winter-which I think would work. Maybe soon...

Queencece 07-04-2003 12:45 PM

The Coldest Winter Ever....

I have read this book twice and it was soooo good. I mean I could not put it down.

Then, once I told everyone in my office about it, they were reading it too.

It was an awesome book and I would like to read No Disrespect also.

Let me start by saying GREAT BOOK. I read it last November on my way to California. Excellent depiction of what really goes on within the black community. In may I sent my copy to my friend that is in Kuwait. He wrote me and told me he loves it. I can't wait for the moive.

candygirl 07-05-2003 12:45 PM

For some reason I can't see Jada as Winter.

Me neither. I think it's because Winter is described as very curvy in the book. Jada is very petite. Also, Winter is only 17, I think, when the story is taking place. Jada is a beautiful woman but I wouldn't buy her as a teenager.

I think Beyonce could be a believable Winter if her hair was darker. If only she could act

RedefinedDiva 07-06-2003 09:36 PM

I kind of think that Jada can pull it off. I don't know. Personally, I would like to see Omar Tyree's "Fly Girl" made into a movie.

chrini 07-07-2003 07:16 PM

I read Jada's company and HBO has a deal with the book. I just hope it doesn't turn into a straight to cable and video movie like Disappearing Acts. I believe this movie could top the box office charts at the theaters. Everyone who has read the book seem to visualize the characters in their own way. ME and my friends thought Gianacarlo (Big Brother Almighty from School Daze and various Spike Lee Joints) would make a good Santiaga. That is if he has not aged too much. One of the sisters from Deliver Us from Eva could be Winter.

I agree about Giancarlo playing Santiaga. However, the only sister from DUFE I could see playing Winter would be Meagan Good. How about Derek Luke for the role of Midnight?

Good choices re: Giancarlo and Derek Luke. Please no on the sisters from DUFE.

I recommend Rosario Dawson for Winter or some unknown talent. As long as I do not see Bryonce, Ashnappy, or J Lo. . . I am :D

abaici 07-07-2003 10:00 PM

I would love to see this movie. I just hope they don't mess it up! I vote for:

Giancarlo as Santiago (I thought of him but could not remember his name)

Mehki for Midnight

Rosario or Michelle Rodriguez (if they girly her up a tad)-Winter

And the crack head mama-------Whitney j/k

You're joking about Whit, but I could really see her in that role.

delph998 07-08-2003 01:42 PM

GREAT BOOK!!! I would love to see the movie too.

gamma_girl52 07-08-2003 05:14 PM

I read in Essence the same thing about a month ago, when Jada was on the cover. She said they were working on it but didn't give any details.

I like Giancarlo and Mekkhi. I don't know about Whitney though :D

Why was I thinking that the girl from "Save the Last Dance" would be good for Winter? You know, the girl that was the ex-girlfriend. I think she would be good.

chrini 07-08-2003 07:41 PM

I pictured Rosario Dawson, Beyonce' , Lauren Valez (New York Under Cover), or Rosie Perez (Do The Right Thing) as Dulce (The woman who visited Santiaga in jail with the little boy.

Derek Luke good choice for Midnight

Good Choice CT4!!!!!! She was really good in the 25th Hour.

My other recommendations:

Santiaga: Mario Van Peeples or Giancarlo Esposito, if he's still looks good
Bullet: Cam'ron, I haven't seen Paid In Full so I don't know about his acting skills, but he seems like he could do it
Mother: Tamala Jones, it has to be someone young because she had Winter at 14
Midnight: Morris Chestnut or Tyson Beckford

***Sidebar: This book to me just like Flyy Girl, except for the next generation. Has anyone else noticed how both of the main characters were in love guys who were really dark skinned????? Hmmm, I wonder why. ***

lil_sunshine 07-12-2003 11:57 AM

I know I posted my suggestions somewhere else before, but I can't find where, so I'm gonna re-submit them here:

Winter: Taral Hicks (she played Keisha in Belly)
Santiaga: Giancarlo Esposito
Winter's mother: Khandi Alexander, Vivica Fox, Whitty Hutton or Jada Pinkett-Smith
Midnight: Morris Chestnut or Omar Epps
Natalie: Lil' Kim ('cuz Natalie was a PHREAK in the book)
Winter's siblings: anybody
Bullet: Silkk the Shocker

The reason why I suggest Taral to play Winter is because Winter is described as kinda dark skinned and I think she can pull it off. The reason why I picked Giancarlo for Santiaga is because in the book, he's described as light skinned with curly hair, and he's light skinned with curly hair. As far as Winter's mom, Khandi is my first choice. And Silkk resembles Bullet to me as far as his description goes. JMHO........

ETA: I think that Rosario Dawson could play Dulce. She's young, pretty, and I'm pretty sure she can pull off the part.

Monique 07-14-2003 05:49 PM

Awwwww

Yallllllll This is one of myyy FAVORITEEEEEE BOOKS (beside Fly Girl) I read this book in 3 hours. I love it. and I cannot wait to see it on the big screen.

I never realized that Winter was dark skinned...I imagined her to look something like Rosario Dawson or that latino Chick on Scrubs.

I'd love to see Morris Chestnut (GOOD LAWD) play Midnight!

I read in Essence that Sister Souljah is writing a part two to this book and the movie is going to be a HBO movie for the first book. I can't wait!

I believe sequel will be out around first of 2004. I am sure it will be off the hook.

ClassyLady 08-11-2003 02:05 PM

I don't really know about a sequel. I have a sinking suspicion that it will not be quite as good as the first one. I can't really see where it would go or what she would do. Did the time in jail change her or not? What will she do when she gets out?

I think that Sister Souljah did a really good job on the first book. There were only a few parts that I found unrealistic or thought could have been written better. But, the book as a whole made an incredible statement. The ending was te perfect conclusion to the story. Sometimes I think people should leave well enough alone. For some reason, I keep seeing this sequel being like the sequel to Flyy Girl.

I am hoping it does not turn out like that waste of paper. I hated "For the Love of Money". I don't think Omar Tyree has written a good book since "Flyy Girl".

gamma_girl52 08-12-2003 10:40 AM

I don't know about a sequel either. What is Winter supposed to do? Everybody was locked up right there with her!

Well I am waiting for the screen version on HBO. I'm sure that will be great.
