The Village

What does everyone think about this one? I am a pretty big M Night Shyamalan fan, and I was pretty creeped out by the trailer last night. All of his films just have a weird feel to them... 6th sense was so good...

angelic1 04-27-2004 03:50 PM

yeh i saw the trailor last night and thought that it looked really good.. i had heard stuff here and there before last night too..

I am not into scary movies like that at all.. I never can watch them bc I am freaked out forever.. though I might actually go to see this. I think it looks interesting

Cluey 04-27-2004 03:57 PM

I want to see this movie when it comes out! It and Troy are the only movies that I am really looking forward to ... :)

chideltjen 04-27-2004 04:56 PM

his movies always kind of freak me out... so i am looking forward to it.

wonder what his part in THIS movie will be (remember he always puts himself on the cast list...)

Yeah, he was the doctor in Signs right? Who was he in the 6th sense... I forgot all about that. It is kinda like PJ casting himself as one of the soldiers during the Helm's Deep battle of The Two Towers... I would do the same. LOL...

This might be SHyamalan's creepiest movie so far though, from the looks of the trailor...

WCUgirl 04-30-2004 01:42 PM

When does it come out? I'm soooo looking forward to it!

In Signs, he was the guy that killed Mel Gibson's wife on accident and had the alien in his house.

In Unbreakable, he was stadium security guard or something.

I forget what he was in 6th Sense...

I didn't know he did Unbreakable. That was the worst movie ever made.

decadence 05-01-2004 01:51 PM

Confused? Moi?

So yeah I haven't ever seen them in a video or heard many of their songs, wouldn't even call myself a fan by any means but I think I can safely say we've all heard of the Village People.

Bizarrely, a coupla months ago I learnt (I think through random LiveJournal browsing) that they're still touring and delighting fans; one of the original band members (the policeman I think) died; the rest and a new member are still out there teaching people it's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A. ...

i liked the feel of the movie. but i think that the story could have been ALOT stronger

swissmiss04 05-01-2004 10:41 PM

In the Sixth Sense Shyamalan cameoed as the doctor who checked out Cole after those punk-ass kids locked him in the "dungeon". In Unbreakable he was the guy who Bruce Willis stopped because he suspected drugs.
Shyamalan is awesome. I loved Unbreakable. It was by far the darkest of the 3 (Signs and 6th Sense being the other two...I know he did something in '98 but I don't remember the name). The battle between good and evil. The triumph of good over evil.
I am definitely going to see "The Village". It looks like it may be good.

Just as an aside...in the end of "Unbreakable" in the scene before Bruce Willis finds out "the truth" you will see two Indian ladies walking around the gallery. They are Shaymalan's wife and daughter. I thought that was pretty cool.

Are they really? Man, can you imagine going to one of their shows?

but back to Shyamalan... I think that Unbreakable was a way in which he was able to really get the feel and overall ambiance of his films down, while still working on the storyline... It is on tonight BTW, on television. And they are having more info on the new movie like last week.

Signs was much better than people give it credit for, if you look at the use of color and everything... I don't want to sound like a film-snob. But if you see the Village trailer again, look at the way in which he uses color. Red stands out like crazy... Everything else is so neutral. It is really cool, even if you are not into films. If I were a producer or director or something, all my friends would be in my films, as like pizza guys and stuff. I guess that is why I am not a producer...

sigirl 07-01-2004 03:04 PM

Any of you guys been keeping up w/ this movie?? I saw a new commercial on TV the other day, but we still have a month to wait until it's released

*sigh*

A friend of mine was an extra in Unbreakable, too. He's in the scene at the football stadium.

I'm definitely going to see this movie. I love M. Night's movies, and especially so because they're filmed right here in the good old Delaware Valley. :)

AGDee 07-03-2004 01:12 PM

Definitely looking forward to seeing this one. I made the mistake of seeing Signs by myself, late at night and I won't make that mistake this time!

No joke, it feels like I started getting excited for this one 10 years ago... At least it is coming up though.:)

AznSAE 07-07-2004 09:39 AM

i love scary movies and can't wait for this one to come out! scary movies never scare me. i sit there and laugh while others are jumping from their seats or screaming :p

krazy 07-07-2004 07:11 PM

The thing about this directors movies though, is that they aren't traditionally scary. It is hard to explain, they just feel awry the whole way through... I like them though... The are very dark.

ZeroCool 07-29-2004 10:34 AM

I'm pretty juiced for this movie this weekend. I love getting the chills in the theater and well, the things in the red cloaks   do it to me even in the commercial. who else is checking this one out on friday?

_Opi_ 07-29-2004 12:58 PM

I want to see this movie opening night.

But I can't because of a stupid retreat in the middle of a hick village !!!

sigirl 07-29-2004 01:10 PM

OMG words cannot explain how exicted I am to see this -- I don't even know why bc it's really just a movie. Could be all the promos that they've put all over town -- seems like no matter where I go there they are.

Anyway -- I'll def. be seeing it this weekend. And I managed to go all this time w/out having it spoiled for me.

(yay)

AXOKatie 07-29-2004 01:37 PM

See, i'm so the type of person that if i'm going to go see a thriller i HAVE to know what's going to happen or else i will have the worst time, like with sixth sense and signs (which i didn't really like, the resolution with Joaquin Phoenix was too cheesy)...i'm going to have to have someone tell me what the big secret is or i'll drive everyone in the theater nuts :p

cutiepatootie 07-29-2004 05:54 PM

I hear ron Howards daughter is in this movie...its her acting debut.......has anyone seen it? does s he look like opie?

As the plan stands right now....that would be me with some friends

I am NOT a "scary movie" girl. Give me a romantic comedy, a kids movie, or a drama anyday over something that may freak me out (which is pretty simple to do....any movie that has suspense/psychological thrillers always creep me out, and then I overanalyze and don't sleep well after seeing it!)

she does resemble him

sigirl 07-30-2004 01:26 PM

I don't think so, but could just be me.

In either case, I LOVED this movie. I thought it was well acted and the premises were well constructed.

Bryce Dallas Howard was really amazing, I can't believe that she hasn't been in more films.

I won't write more so not to spoil the film for others, but I recommend that everyone see this.

WCUgirl 07-30-2004 01:33 PM

My husband and I are going to see this tonight. I'm very excited.

I've come up with my own conclusion about the ending....if it's going to be anything like his previous movies I already have a good idea of where it's headed...and if I'm right then I'll be able to handle it.

That, and I can only handle so much suspense if I don't know what's going on. I think I might have to spoil the fun and search online for some spoilers. ;)

chideltjen 07-30-2004 01:38 PM

It's not getting that great of reviews. And reviews are hinting at the ending that is surprise (aren't they usually) but the audience may care less. I may see it this weekend.

James 07-30-2004 08:21 PM

I'll see it this weekend. I just hope he breaks from his formula . . . you know:

1. A Significant color.

2. A twisty ending.

not this time. apparently the big color is red and everyone is talking about the 'surprise' ending

although it looks like yellow has significance too. maybe?

WCUgirl 07-31-2004 01:32 AM

Just got back from seeing this.

It was really good. I was right in my guess as to what the twist was, but I was still a bit surprised about the other part. ;)

This movie just reinforces the fact that Joaquin Phoenix is a really good actor. That Bryce chick was pretty good, too.

I think Mr. Shyamalan could have done a bit more of a build-up to the reveal. I wasn't quite shocked enough...but then again, I had a pretty good idea of where the story was going so maybe that was the problem. Husband was shocked and he agrees the build-up could have had a bit more to it.

The thing that gets me is all the people leaving the theater thinking it was bad. Here's a hint to those of you undecided on whether or not to see it: if you think "Signs" was a movie about aliens, don't see this movie. You will be sorely disappointed.

ETA: Another general tip: don't see this movie in a crowded theater. Our theater was packed, and the amount of people laughing and screaming was really distracting.

Rudey 07-31-2004 02:42 AM

One of the stupidest movies ever. EVER! It wasn't scary. It was a love story.

I loved this movie. Such a great twist....

CASIGKAP 08-01-2004 01:08 PM

I thought this movie was worse than Unbreakable. UGH! A real stinker. I think Van Helsing was better than this crap.

People in our theatre we screaming profanities during the movie and after. It just sucked.

I am about to give the movie away in a post or two in case anyone cares...

After "the twist" is revealed in the movie I leaned over to my date & said "now every man in this movie theatre is wondering how they got dragged to the movies." At precisely that moment the entire front row got up and left the theatre without finishing the movie.

Honestly though, I liked it because I didn't expect much out of it. I expected a twist at the end and a twist is exactly what I got.

James 08-01-2004 08:55 PM

ITs like the twist ruined the movie. I can see why the reviewers are chewing him up.

The movie does a good job creating a mood and making us care about the characters, but then the Twist comes and we as an audience are betrayed. Like we really cared for nothing. The joke was on us.

The twist lowered the intensity of the movie. And after that it dribbled away.

However, it did sell out every showing on four screens . . so who knows.

sageofages 08-01-2004 09:11 PM

I figured out what the twist would be even before seeing it. Seeing a trailer, I guessed it was a "modern" day setting and the tombstone was a diversion.

He must be losing his touch...

I don't know if he's losing his touch...I think that since everyone has grown to expect twists from his movies, people have gotten better at guessing what the twist will be.
