Yikes! Just one movie?

"West Side Story"

"Singing in the Rain"

And for pure fun, it's hard to beat "Grease."

Yeah, I thought about that one, too. Wait 'till they do Hairspray!

alphagambaby 04-16-2004 11:14 AM

mine is "Oklahoma" but that's all because of my mom... since birth, I've been raised on songs from it

Taualumna 04-16-2004 11:21 AM

The Sound of Music!!!!!!!!! There was a time in my life when I would watch it every day (I was like 5 or so then)

chideltjen 04-16-2004 11:30 AM

I don't think it's a movie... but Tommy is really REALLY good.

Other than that:
West Side Story
Chicago
and of course, Grease

I think you're right. It started out as a "Rock Opera," then was done on stage, but I don't remember a movie.

Chicago is another obvious great one.

ETA Speaking of Rock Operas and movies, there's Jesus Christ, Superstar -- which occurred to me because our daughter opens in it tonight at a local theatre company. Her husband is directing.

ZTAngel 04-16-2004 11:35 AM

You'll love this little bit of trivia, then: when Shirley Jones was taking acting lessons at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, she lived in the Alpha Delta Pi house - and there are several photos of her to prove it!

I like the South of Music, too, but I also liked A Chorus Line and a lot of the others mentioned. Not a fan of Grease, because it's better onstage.

DeltAlum 04-16-2004 12:21 PM

Don't think Hairspray is a movie yet -- but probably will be someday. Also will probably be done by every high school theatre company sooner or later -- after the rights are released.

cutiepatootie 04-16-2004 12:22 PM

grease
sound of music and
chicago ( 2003 version)

The Boardway show was based on the 1988 John Waters movie Hairspray. Rikki Lake, Divine, Jerry Stiller, Sonny Bono and Deborah Harry starred. It was a movie with a lot of music but not a musical.

The movie of The Who's Tommy came out in 1975. Aside from members of The Who, among the stars were Elton John (the Pinball Wizard), Tina Turner (the Acid Queen) and Ann-Margaret.

AchtungBaby80 04-16-2004 01:55 PM

oklahoma

west side story

gypsy

singing in the rain

man, it's bad when you know all the words alongside the characters when they are siinging and talking....

ASUADPi 04-19-2004 09:02 PM

Like everyone else, I can't just pick one.

First I have to go with the musicals that I have been in.

The Wizard of Oz
The Music Man
Peter Pan
The Sound of Music
Lil' Abner

Now I have to go with ones that I've seen and loved.

Chicago (2003)
Beauty and the Beast (although I think the play is better than the movie)
The Lion King (have yet to see the play, next year though I will)
