I'm not feeling Mrs. Hill's Fade. I know she had to cut the dreds off to start over...I just didn't like it.

AKA2D '91 05-24-2001 10:54 PM

log on to www.essence.com for "behind the scenes" pix, etc. This was taped back in April.

DreamfulOne 05-24-2001 11:03 PM

I didn't like her hair due either or the outfit that Camille Cosby had on; however, I thought that Star Jones and Maxine Waters looked ravishing. Yolanda & Donnie sounded good as usual. D.L & Steve are still the funniest http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. I'm glad they were the host.

Question: how do u all feel about women w/ muscles wearing evening wear (after 6 attire)? I'm specifically thinking about Venus and Serena..

Not a problem with me... but if Star can wear that white outfit (although her makeup was fabulous http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ) then Serena and Venus have open season! http://www.plauder-smilies.de/happy/mdrbig.gif Now what happened to Lauryn's hair??? I did'nt see that part! http://www.plauder-smilies.de/sad/smhair1.gif It's not bad, is it? http://www.plauder-smilies.de/sad/nixweiss.gif

PrettyPetite 05-24-2001 11:55 PM

The whole show was WONDERFUL. There were funny moments (Steve & D.L. did a pretty good job hosting, and S.L. Jackson jamming to 'so fresh & so clean' was off the hook!)...inspiring moments, touching moments (the 4 mothers and their stories had me crying). I think that this show really did a good job in putting us in a favorable light!

In response to Dreamful One's question about muscular women in evening attire, well, realistically, what are they supposed to wear?? Should they NOT wear evening gowns simply because they have well developed muscles? To me, that is like saying that a plus size woman shouldn't wear an evening gown because she doesn't fit society's standard of a normal woman's size. It shouldn't even be an issue. I thought Venus and Serena looked wonderful.

I wasn't saying they looked horrible or that they shouldn't have worn it I was just asking how do the rest of you feel. I didn't list my opinion before.

When I posted, I was just voicing my opinion...I wasn't directing it towards you as if you thought they looked horrible! If my response came off like that, then I apologize!

First of all there were a few jacked up outfits and hair-do's. Lauryn looked like Tracy Chapman. And Lauryn is usually so cute. Camille should go back to the short cut. Susan Taylor's dress looked like a set of drapes. Venus looked marvelous while Serenas dress looked as if she made it herself right before the show. None the less their hair and make up was on point. That last mother who spoke was so powerful. I called my sister and she was boo hooing like a baby over it. Maxine Waters has put on a pound and it looks so good on her. None the less -- the show was excellent. All award recipients were very deserving.

Yeah, I saw a pic of her last month when she became the topic of dicussion at nappyhair.com. I almost fell out of my seat. I loved those locs.

In the pic I saw this April she almost BALD. I see it grew a little before the taping. I wonder what she is going to do with it next...if she decides to do anything at all.

Hey, at least I liked the song!

sunnydays96 05-25-2001 08:10 AM

I couldn't even concentrate on Lauryn Hill's song because I was so shocked http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif about her appearance. I want to know what happened. She must be going through some things to be looking like that. If I had turned into the program in the middle of her performance, I probably wouldn't have know it was her.

To answer the question posed: I think physically fit women can wear evening attire. I don't see anything wrong with it. Makes me want to lift some weights. I think this relates to something that was said in another topic- "if you are going to be in the public eye then present yourself well". Venus and Serena's profession calls for them to be in shape, so they can wear whatever-in my opinion.

Overall I thought the show was very enjoyable and represented African Americans to the fullest.

Professor 05-25-2001 08:31 AM

She needs a shape up!!!

Eclipse 05-25-2001 08:38 AM

I knew y'all would be on this today!

My take on the show...

DL & Steve were pretty good, although I though DL looked better with the twists. I just CANNOT get with the cornrows! (although the line about having to go to the salon instead of the big girl named Peaches doing it on the front porch was funny!! But why do it [ebonics on purpose--don't want the grammar police to get me!] haveta always be a big girl?!?!?!?)

Serena's dress was just awful!! I wonder if she made it. I think she and Venus are supposed to be in fashion school or something.

I actually liked Camille Cosby's dress, but thought her hair looked like she had just rolled out of bed!

Star Jones is a diva, but I'm sorry that dress was not flattering. If she had had cleavage I woulda thought it was Aretha Franklin!

Lauryn Hill, who was simply beautiful with locs, looked like a 12 year old boy. I was trying to understand the lyrics of the song too, although I love the acoustic sound.

Samuel L. was too cute jammin to OutKast. His wife is a strong woman (and my Spelman Sister--had to throw that in! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif)

Why Does Steve Harvey insist on wearing suits in ice cream sherbet colors?!?! Was that mint green???

The honorees were certainly inspirational! And over all, I thought the show was great! This may be a minor thing, but on most award shows they have the honoree go back stage after they get their award. On Essence they walked back to their seat. What's up with that??

PinkIvy 05-25-2001 11:29 AM

I thought the show was actual wonderful eventhough I do have various issues with some folk:

Lauren Hill. . . .All I am going to say is WHY?

The dress that Serena had on, NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!, it was not cute let alone flattering.

On the other hand. . . .I thought the speeches from the four mothers was great, emotional, and so inspiring. By the way does anyone know where you can read up on their stories?

You are right all the award recipients were deserving ESPECIALLY the four women against voilence. The last mother was absolutely fantastic. Her story (as well as the other three) was inspirational and saddening to lose ALL three sons--i was in tears.

CrimsonTide4 05-25-2001 11:41 AM

A Kappa friend just told me that she looked like BUD from the Cosby Show. I was http://www.plauder-smilies.de/lach.gif

I will say this again (talking about it in DST forum as well) that I love to see Classy shows and Essence always has a classy affair.

Wow! - - Until reading this thread this morning, I did NOT KNOW that was Lauren Hill. I had actually walked into the room in the middle of her performance. So, I didn't hear her get introduced. I thought to myself all night, that must be some new artist...She's got the whole Lauren Hill/Tracy Chapman thing going on...I had no idea that was Lauren Hill - until now. I don't like the new look, but hey she's got to do her thing. She's such a great artist that I can't even fault her.

Puffy/P-Diddy/Puff Daddy/Sean/Whatever...Take off the shades indoors? And why was his ghetto mama sitting in the front row with her "O.G" lookin' boyfriend? Was she honored or something at the show? Did Puffy bring a date or is he still heartbroken of JLo. I'm not hating on Puffy. He's a fellow Howard alum! I like that he always gives props to our alma mater.

I never knew he actually got a degree. I thought he stopped going to school to start working on his business full time. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

ROFL...that was almost as good as Steve wearing "sherbet colors". http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I missed the show. I hope it repeats.

From what I hear she chopped off her hair as a way to starting over. She got Rohan Marley ( the father of her 2 children) in bed with her cousin/hair stylist or something .

toocute--
Steve Harvey's "sherbet colors"

I'm still laughing--I had wondered whether I was alone!!!!

serenity_24 05-25-2001 04:22 PM

Is it just me or was it that when LaurYn had locks, ErYka had locks, and when Eryka cut her locks, all of a sudden Lauryn cut hers too.

I hope it's not true that she got/cought her babby daddy in the bed with her cousin/hair stylist or something.

Hey that's true. But I know that Eryka's locs were extentions (fake). I think Lauryn's were real. Not sure.

To all the peole that keep asking about Lauryn's fade...like Exquizit said...you have to cut 'em if you want a new do. Locs are permanent. You can't just undo them.

I'm not sure if it was symbolic or what.

You do have to cut them but not to the bone. I've had friends who let their new growth come in and maintain that until their hair was long enought to cut the locks off just the ends. They would comb the new growth and wrap it with head scarves.

prayerfull 05-25-2001 05:19 PM

That's right...I forgot that Puffy didn't actually graduate from Howard. If any of you were there around the same time as me ('89-92), you know that there were a lot of "professional students" there in those days. (i.e joe mahone & co.)

Shalom2U 05-25-2001 05:44 PM

Okay, I'm really crackin' up from this thread---GC needs a comedy section!

As for Lauryn's locs, some loc wearers cut them of after seven years because 7 is the biblical number that's symbolic of completion (not to be confused with new-age/numerology). So for many loc wearers, after the 7 year completion or cycle, they will often cut them off and return to genesis.

***I didn't like the half/pink half/white thingy Serena Williams wore---with all that $$$ I'm sure she could have had something, anything designed to bring out her personality over that! (Reminds me of something I made in Home Econ class in Middle School--yuk). And I'm so happy Venus waxed her eyebrow!!! Do I sound like I'm playa-hatin' because I don't mean no disrespect to the sisters, it's just that they could do alot better in the HIGH MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT!***

Shalom~

I just left my beauty salon and my beautican reminded me she has a part in the movie about Bob Marley's life. That may have something to do with it http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

Ya know, Lenny Kravitz did the same thing,he chopped off the locks and so he says, it felt like this burden/energy was being released... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

Yeah, that's true. Maybe she didn't want to be bothered. I'm planning on growing locs and I think that it's easier to just cut 'em when you don't want them anymore. In between stages are the worst.

LadyAKA 05-26-2001 12:59 AM

I echo most comments here ...

I have not been able to catch any awards shows in entirety this year, but when I read dreamfulone's post I jumped at my TV. I was finally able to sit back and thoroughly enjoy a black awards show. It was great and all recipients were most deserving.

By the way does anyone know why Lauryn chopped it all off? We are talking about how she looks but what happened, did she have to, did she want to, did she have surgery or something, I know some procedures require you to shave your head. So what is really up?

jali0004 05-28-2001 04:46 PM

I guess I'm the only one who likes Lauren's new TWA! I thought she looked great!! Once again, Lauern isn't conforming to the status quo...

I enjoyed the Essence Awards show, but I as well was not feeling LH hair and CC dress!! I thought she (Lauren Hill) had a butch look. I love her though, but she looked like she was going through..... I love Soror Star, but that was not the look she should have been going for....Her make-up looked nice, but the dress was a fashion don't.

This was one of the better shows!!! Props up to Essence....(Susan L. Taylor) Magazine Editor!!!
