Battlestar Galactica
I was over at a friend's house (who has cable) and I saw an ad for the New Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi channel and was psyched. I mean, I am grandaddy here (33!) and I remember BSG in 1978! I was 8. Anyway, I got nostalgic and then found out that this renewed interest in BSG because of the new one resulted in a reissue on DVD of the one-season show. So I grabbed it on NetFlix.
So, now I am buying stuff on eBay and have been downloading desktops and screensavers -- and so I am a dork. |
That was my favorite show when it was on. It got cheesy when they found Earth, but before that, it was classic!
|
I'm a big fan of it. Looking forward to it.
|
They made starbuck a girl!!!!! And boomer is a chick too . . . whats the Universe coming to?
But that Cylon looked hot. Is it going to be a series or a limited mini series? |
I absolutely LOVED Battlestar Galactica. As soon as I heard that it was coming out on DVD (I had some on video) I went and purchased it. It comes in a cool Cylon head box.
I used to wish that in Galactica 80 that they would have followed up on Starbucks story it was left open ended when Dr. Zee had his dream about Starbuck and the "angel" after he was stranded on the planet. I think that Starbuck would have survived on the planet somehow. (Can you tell I am a huge fan of it). I'm going to watch the new Battlestar but I am really concerned because they have changed the characters somewhat. Part of what was fun was Starbuck always getting in trouble with the chicks, especially when he was juggling Cassiopeia and Athena. I think it's a miniseries right now but if it gets a good response they may want to turn it in to a new series. What was your favorite episode? The one I can think of right now is where Apollo "died" and was revived by the light beings. Then at the very end they're all having dinner with Adama and can give him some info about where earth is. Also, how many of you have read the Battlestar books that Richard Hatch has written? Carolyn p.s. wow, this is my 500th post on gc |
Pegasus
My favorite was when the Battlestar Pegasus popped up out of no where.

They put a lot of drama into one season didn't they? I am not sure what my favorite episode was but the one where Serena, Apollo's new wife and mother of Boxy dies is pretty touching.
Thats the one where the women are made into pilots because all the men are sick . . . Supposedly the series got cancelled after the first season because the studio just didn't realize how successful and popular the show was, kind of like what happened to Star Trek. After all kinds of fan response the studio wantes to put the show together again but all the stars contracts had expired. Thats why they were left with that pitiful excuse of a show Battlestargalactica 1980. I never read the books are they any good? And were sheeba and Apollo supposed to be an item? Was there some ssexual tension there? |

You know they never really developed the Sheeba and Apollo thing really well but I do think if there had been a second season you would have seen it develop. |
Through the First Three DVDs

But I have the _Making of The New BSG_ TiVo'd and am looking forward to seeing it, although my girlfriend saw it and tells me it looks pretty good -- although she is completely scandalized by the fact that Starbuck is a woman! Did I hear somewhere that they said that the writers will never right a Romance betwixt Apollo and Starbuck... Starbuck seems a little butch, anyway. I can't wait because its only a short time until the 8th and 9th on the Sci-Fi channel! |
Re: Through the First Three DVDs
Sheez I hope the writers don't put a romance between Starbuch and Apollo. It would take many seasons of getting used to starbuck being a girl before I could stop imagining the old starbuck as dirk benedict having a sex change just to bang his best male friend lol . . .
Oh starbuck! Has the universe run out of women for you that you need to transgender and go after the men also? Quote:

SciFi Channel + Battlestar
:p Of all people, I am glad it is Sci Fi channel that is doing the reinvention of one of my favorite shows as a kid. They did a good job with the Dune series, and I think Ron Moore, the director for this beast of a project, is well connected to his BG roots-- and he has a good track record with shows.
You know, you cannot trust this gem to just anyone with a resurection idea....:D |

In this case, I think we really only have about 4 hours of miniseries, although I am really hoping for a series! How about you? I would love for Sci Fi Channel to finally produce a show that didn't suck. I mean there are enough X-Files episodes that they could have just done reruns! |
I finally saw more detailed previews of the new BG. It looks like it is going to be a totally different concept with just names the same and that's about it.
From what I can get it looks like Cylons have been created by them and they look human. In fact Gaius BALTAR (notice he has a first name now) is dating one and I think is betrayed by them or some such thing. Besides Starbuck, Boomer is also female and caucasian to boot. I didn't really see any people of color in the previews being shown now. I think Boxy may even have become female in this new version although I wouldn't swear about that. There is a comment made about bringing ships out of mothballs - it looked like they were talking about the fighters. Well I will be watching it but I'm wondering how good it will be Carolyn |
I am a little frustrated by how few black folk there is on board -- still loads of Old White Men and a lot of pretty multicultural babes. The 70s was all about multiculturalism and not to be politcal but under Bush, its sort of a little Stepford and quite a lot like the 50s, anyway -- haven't seen an afro in years!

Tonight's the night!

Yeah it sure is! Tonight and tomorrow night on Sci-Fi.
Check out the schedule for the night Here are some pretty juicy reviews! Seattle Pi: 'Battlestar Galactica' remake is a blast if you let go of the past North Carolina Paper: Space-Worthy: Remake of Battlestar Galactica is mostly successful The Miami Herald: A Sleeker 'Battlestar Galactica' Returns Battlestar Galactica Flies Again Variety |
Commercial Break
After the first 40 minutes, this is how it compares to the original:
1) Better acting 2) Characters are more realistic, and more fleshed out 3) Plot is still fleshing out, but it seems to be coherent If anyone is on the left coast, please post if it is on yet so no one spoils it. |
WOW!!!
|
As one who saw the entire original series way back when over 25 years ago, I was quite impressed with the modernized retelling of the Battlestar Galactica saga. Purists will beg to differ, though.
Besides, those old Monogram Colonial Viper plastic models made for good conversions to flying model rockets! (Though there were officially-licensed flying models, but they were grossly simplified.) Dammit, I missed out on the limited-edition 4-CD version of the series soundtrack! :( |
Better than I could have hoped!
I grew up watching the series in 70s and then seeing the Galactica 1980 (with Wolfman Jack) and actually am quite happy to scooch aside and offer some room to this new show, which treats the Battlestar Galactica story like Jazz: all the old themes and melodies are there and intact but this is a wild and often dark interpretation. The original might have had rose-colored glasses, but this one is wearing dark wrap-around sunglasses!
Although I have been reading a lot about the new Battlestar Galactica and some of the early reviews say that the show is way too sexy, but what I saw was a plot and character-driven space opera that’s a little edgy and pretty cool. The premise is that the Galactica (and her crew) is a reluctant hero. She was ready to be decommissioned and be turned into a museum, as were many of her commanders, and then she is pressed forth to become heroic. I think the story led the sexuality a lot more then vice-versa. Upon seeing the first half of the new Battlestar Galactica series, I think Edward James Olmos’ character, Commander Adama, is going to present some intense issues between the old and new worlds of the Galactica legacy. The generational gaps and tensions are already starting to manifest themselves through him as a veteran stalwart Battlestar leader. Who would have known that Number Six could act and who knew that I would actually prefer Starbuck as a girl? This Battlestar Galactica is from an alternate universe and should be allowed to live on its own merit. In fact, I think if we play our cards right and support the show (both nights) and then maybe get our friends to see the re-showings, we might be able to convince Sci Fi to make this a proper series. Too many reality shows! We need more storytelling like I saw last night! |
This was sooo much better than I was expecting. Now i was too young when it was first out, but my father was a fan and has the dvd's now. We watched some of them over Thanksgiving and I loved it. I had seen plenty of the old episodes before as well. Big thumbs up for the 1st part last night though. Cannot wait for tonight.
|
I loved it! :D Can't wait for tonight's installment!
I just wish I remembered the original series well enough to make meaningful comparisons. Haven't seen it in years. I do miss the original theme music, though :p |
I am a geek, I am watching Episode 1 again right now! The second episode is at 9 eastern.
|
All I have to say is that it was spectacular. I hope it becomes a series...
|
I wrote the recap of the 2nd episode this morning and would be willing to post it -- its rough -- if anyone is interested ;-)
|
Battlestar Re-Cap? Yes Sir!
Post it!! Post it!! Please, I loved the series, I want to check it out. Do you write for a mag or anything? Or just for fun?
|
You asked for it!
The war is on and Caprica and everywhere else is getting nuked.
Apollo and Boomer need to emergency land to repair their shuttle and pick up Baltar through his shrewd nature. Baltar has a Cylon implant in his head so he sees Number 6 who wants Baltar to love her so she is giving him hints as to what’s going on. Everybody is dead so the Minister or Education, number 43 in line, becomes President of the Colonies. (Required pissing contest between ADAMA as Main Military Cow and PRESIDENT as Main Civilian Cow -- and of course, PRESIDENT is not only smarter but superior in every way! Madam President hires Baltar to be resident genius and to help her with planning the rescue mission. Adama wants Madam President to jump to safety with the Galactica, but Madam President want to save civilization, which she does. Suddently, incoming fighters approach but Apollo sets of a huge Electro Magnetic Pulse which makes the Cylons think that they were blown up by a nuke. A clever ruse. Apollo is presumed dead a bunch of times. Madam President decide to do a hyper light jump (hyperspace) from Caprica (the home planet -- like Washington) but not all of the remaining ships could make it so out of the 100 or so thousand survivors, only 50,000 humans survived. The entire fleet hides in the electrical clouds of a remote station to refuel and re-arm. We meet a Cylon and finally people beside Baltar realize that Cylons can be both Lingerie models and dorky looking "dudes" who are stuck on the station. Cylons’ silicon nature is allergic to the energy storms of the planet so the fleet is safe for a little while. Adama wanted to return to fight the Cylons, but Madam President convinves him to run and make babies. So, the Battlestar is able to hold off the Cylons who are right outside this electrical storm, but ADAMA (and Starbuck and APOLLO) are able to hold them at bay until the entire fleet clears the Adama tells the survivors that he has arcane knowledge of Earth, the 13th colony, and knows how to get there, but this is a lie (used as motivation) and only Madam President knows. The second part of the two-part series seems to end in a cliffhanger so it looks like it’ll become a series. Boomer turns out to be a Cylon (last scene) because during the last scene we see 4 of the 12 models of humanoid Cylons and Boomer (the Asian woman fighter pilot) is one of them, and not just that but also the leader -- but she might not know that she is -- she is a sleeper -- and Number 6 did mention that there were some Cylons who didn't even know -- but apparently her model is the "Emperious Leader" model and so we are pretty sure only we -- the audience -- knows. Apparently, she might still need to be activated. The respond to he likeness down on the supply station with the entire original series BY YOUR COMMAND to he. Maybe this model -- boomer's model -- is high caste! The END? Or, the series? |
Brother,
Nice job. I do disagree with your assessment that the President is superior to Adama in every way. Adama, as I see it, posesses much greater wisdom. When he told the story of Earth, he did so to give people hope. The President could not see the forest from the trees until Adama explained it to her. Also, the story of Earth being a "lie" is itself a lie to viewers. We are on Earth, and we are real. In my opinion, Adama had two choices; enter into an argument over the validity of "the truth", or create a false conspiracy with the President to gain her absolute support for a "myth" that would bind the remaining elements of humanity together with hope. He chose to be intellectually dishonest for the sake of humanity. To me, that is wisdom. |
That is a very important distinction. You're right: its very YIN/YANG between them, eh?
|
Now I am very impressed with this dialogue... I wonder why the BG discussions have never surfaced in the past. I wonder, since you two seem so darn informed, is this going to become a weekly series? The ratings for this were through the roof.

As far as this being turned into a regular series, I just don't know. It would be difficult to maintain this level of production quality for the SciFi Chanel, but we can hope. |
Yes, the rumors about smart Phi Psi's is true (handsome, too)
Well, the rumors that I have heard have it that they will start a series slated for 8PM on Sundays if the ratings are good and check this out: Quote:

talk about a throw back to my past. i had to take a double take at the thread to see if that was really battlestar Galectica......Loved the 70s version of it. Stayed up every saturday night when it came on with my younger brother to watch that.
I had the stuffed dog from the show that looked like alf |
I gather that the new series has several shows completed and in the can for broadcast next year (early 05 ?). This should be interesting. However, has anyone seen the pilot of a proposed Battlestar that was apparently shot back in the early 80s with a very surprising almost "Deus ex Machina" ending? I saw an old tape of the episode (pilot) where the fleet is trying to run from three Base Stars and after the usual round of hide and seek coupled with some rear guard delaying action scenes, where too many Vipers are lost, Adama realizes that things look like they are really in for it with little or no hope this time. He orders the communications officer to send out a general CQ request for assistance from any one who can help, perhaps hoping for a return of the Battlestar Pegasus. As the episode ends you hear the surprising response to the urgent call for help. They pick up a transmission from another ship and the voice over is Nichelle Nichols (Lt Uhura) saying, "To unidentified craft requesting help, we are USS Enterprise. How may we assist." Then it rolls to credits as the episode ends suggesting either a merger or a "guest appearance" from old NCC-1701.
It would seem that nothing came of this pilot, but I was wondering if anyone had seen this episode or heard anything about an attempt to merge or guest spot Star Trek and Battlestar? |
