Steel Magnolias
Does anyone know which chapter shelby was in????
|
The character Shelby in Steel Magnolias was based on the life of Susan Harling. Susan was a member of Kappa Iota chapter at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisana.
|
I am SO Shelby/Susan reincarnated. Here is why:
I live in Louisiana I am a Phi Mu My wedding was pink and pink (blush and bashful) I married a KA (which I am convinced she did because of the civil war outfits in the movie) I am diabetic (which is not fun but definitely ironic) Hopefully the rest doesn't come true... |
Yes, the man she married was a KA. My best friend/roommate was a Phi Mu at Northwestern LA and she transferred to Ole Miss about halfway through school. I met a few Phi Mu's from down there and theym were good girls.
|
Please forgive me for crashing, but I'm watching Steel Magnolias right now. The funeral scene is just over, and I think Claree is wearing a Phi Mu pin on her lapel! Has my imagination run wild, or is she wearing the quadrafoil?

STEEL MAGNOLIAS!
Shelby (Julia Roberts) played Susan Harlin and her son, in the movie, Jack, actually attends Northwestern State in Louisiana where she was a Phi Mu. I am a Phi Mu @ NSU and really good friends with her son, Robert. He has come to our meetings and shown us pictures of the real her! it's awesome! any other questions.....just reply! LIOB!

Steel Magnolias - Phi Mu Find
Hey Girls - My chapter is doing a "Phi Mu Find" for one of our Inspiration week days. What we are doing is watching Steel Magnolias, and trying to find all the things we can that pertain to Phi Mu.. and whoever finds the most WINS! Well, I couldn't really find that many phi mu things while I was watching the movie - so I was hoping that some of you girls out there would know of some.. and be able to tell me!
Thanks!!! Miranda - Beta Phi Chapter of PHI MU |

My mother always uses the line (and I'm paraphrasing) "Will that baby know what his mother went through for him and how much she loved him?" on me, as I have been told that having children may be dangerous to my health (I miscarried while I was married). Does Robert realize? |

On Lifetime
Right now it's 9:22pm eastern time (HAPPY Easter EVENING!) in FL and they're showing Steel Magnolias on Lifetime and I've been dying to see it so I can see all the things you are talking about but I missed most of the movie :(!
|
I will be looking at Claree during the funeral scene - I really want to see if she IS wearing that quadrafoil!!
|
I've never heard of Claree being a Phi Mu! I missed the funeral scene, but I'm listening to it.
|
I just wanted to say that I watched Steel Magnolias during Easter Weekend and I just wanted to see the part where they show the composite. So I record it, stop and rewind and keep looking at the composite. So obvious it is a composite but I couldn't read anything on it for the life of me. :)
Now I just need to rent the movie so I can watch the funeral scene and pay close attention to Claree. ;) |

I am sorry to crash but i am a big steel magnolias freak........i have seen that movie at least 35 times and cry every time...... another Phi Mu symbol.... the funeral scene .... the casket was adorned with sprays of pink carnations. Pink dress she wore when she was leaving for the honeymoon. It is hard to make out the composite. The big pink flower hanging up next to it. I think it is right that claree was wearing the badge.
that movie was all about blush and bashful=PINK!:D |

I just saw it for the 40th time and i never ever get sick and tired of it!
|
Steel Magnolias is on right now! I was looking for the Golden Girls, but what a heart warming surprise :) I hope all my dear sister's are doing well.
Love and Love |
Okay it was just on last night on lifetime and the more I watched Claree the more it looked like what she might be wearing was a pin with a guard.
It really looked like it could have been a Phi Mu badge. Curious, does anyone know if the actress who plays Claree, Olympia Dukakis, is a Phi Mu? If she is maybe she wore the pin for a reason. If she's not, pick her up for AI (same goes for Julia Roberts and all the other women in the cast if their not already greek). :) |
badges in steel magnolias
it looks like after the wedding when julia roberts is telling sally field that corsages are stupid, look closely, because to me it looks like julia is wearing a badge. anyone else see it?
|
I believe Sally Field is in a sorority i cannot recall which one but i read on one of the websites that she is is a famous sister
|
So I am watching the movie now, but yesterday I watched the special features and one of them was titled "remembering steel magnolias" (something to that effect). The author spoke a lot about how he wanted to get something in writing of his sister and how he wanted his nephew to know how wonderful she was.
Anyways, he mentioned that all the doctors we see at the end of the movie who are helping shelby, they were his sister, susan's, real doctors and nurses. He also mentioned that his mom (who was so excited that sally field would be playing her) really wanted to watch the scene, even though he was worried how she would react to it. He said he thought she just wanted to see Julia get up, since Susan never did. Breaks your heart. |
I watched Steel Magnolias twice this weekend and each time you see Claree in the funeral scenes i have looked very carefully and i swear it looks like a Phi mu badge. you can see it is not a definite round circle so its got to be a badge.
Also i looked at the bedroom scene were she is getting ready to leave on her honeymoon and the composite could be a phi mu composite because if you look closely at the crest in the middle it looks like yours. |

And I so wanted it to be one!! |

Honeychile... it was on today and I could have sworn it was a Phi Mu badge with a dangle. You could kinda see the chain hanging down. I wish we could find out for sure! |
I too watched it again today, actually with my grandfather. I explained to him that it is based on a true story. I even told him that she was in a sister sorority. I even went on to explain that we were founded at the same school and that some of our founders were friends with each other, the whole shebang. LOL.
But when the funeral scene came on, I just could not tell what Claree was wearing on her lapel. But it does resemble a badge. |
I'm thinking we need it on VHS, so you can slo-mo the scene. It's definitely either the bow or a Phi Mu pin & guard, though. Are Phi Mus allowed to wear their pin on a closed suit lapel?
|
I watched it on VHS and you simply can not tell. However, I'm betting that it's not a badge (even though it really does look like one) simply because the actress isn't a member of Phi Mu (the most famous actress we have is Mary Wickes, Sister Mary Lazarus from Sister Act) and even for a movie would most likely not be allowed to don the badge (even if the real life character was indeed a member). But that's an assumption.

I noticed for the first time that before she leaves for the honeymoon there is a paddle in her room.
|
I was going to say everytime i see this movie it makes me think Pi Mu!
I was just watching it again for the umpteenth time today on OXygen and in the bedroom scene with Sally Fields, Shelby is wearing a badge on her pink dress, and as for the background....the flower on the wall seemed to look like a rose instead of a carnation. Above the composite was a bid day picture as well. I do love verizon Fios I can rewind and pause and examine!!!!!!!!!!! |
I thought I had heard somewhere that nationals made julia roberts like an honorary phi mu so that she could wear the badge for the movie..... am i wrong? anyone else heard this or can confirm it?
|
I also heard this, but it wasn't in my Phi Manual and I'd assume that something like that would be along with the parts mentioning Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee as honorary Philomatheans. If it was true, it'd be important and put into the manual, no (we don't have very many "famous" members) so why leave her out?
Plus, I've never had any of my sisters who have been to HQ mention seeing any pictures of Julia there or any information regarding the movie, but I'll ask to be sure as my chapter's current Pres. has been multiple times. |
