clearing Greek letters (founding)

Re: my earlier post. Here are letters under consideraion. Please advise of any known conflict. Thanks, "D"

Alpha Sigma Chi
Sigma Psi Delta (local)
Sigma Omega Psi
Delta Sigma
Sigma Delta Omega
Delta Epsilon Phi
Kappa Sigma Psi (high school frat)
Sigma Theta Delta
Sigma Chi Theta
Nu Sigma Theta
Tau Sigma
Sigma Psi Sigma
Sigma Tau Omega (local)

LPIDelta 01-17-2003 01:40 PM

Not that it matters but Alpha Sigma Chi is a local sorority in Wisconsin.

Isn't Sigma Theta Delta a national honorary fraternity for English majors?? As someone else said-- you wouldn't want to be STD.

And Delta Epsilon Phi-- well this is my personal preference-- is awfully close to Delta Phi Epsilon which is an NPC sorority and a national foreign service fratenity.

33girl 01-17-2003 01:44 PM

There's also an Alpha Sigma Chi at one of the SUNY's (I think Oswego) - it's a local sorority.

Tau Sigma sounds the best, solely cause I don't think I've ever heard it before.

Dfran 01-17-2003 01:52 PM

Tau Sigma has a nice ring. If you like Zappa, check out Project Object. They have a web page, I think it's www.projectobject.com, but I'm not for sure. Hot Rats!

FuzzieAlum 01-17-2003 02:00 PM

The English honor society is Sigma Tau Delta.

DGMarie 01-17-2003 03:09 PM

Tau Sigma

Sounds pretty close to Tau Beta Sigma which is the national marching band sorority.

Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi

Any conflict with Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi?

DeltaSigStan 07-14-2003 01:47 PM

Several of our chapters went local with "Delta Sigma" after the dry house stuff came into effect.

cristinasmile 07-14-2003 02:08 PM

There would be no alcohol involved ever with Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi. This would be a local, unaffiliated sorority.

Why 4 letters? It sounds as though you are saying you are the Epsilon Pi chapter of Sigma Kappa national sorority.

The sorority I am trying to create, according to the NPC is not affiliated with NPC or any other chapter. I e.mailed them (NPC) and they said:

Cristina - I am sorry but we have no information regarding local sororities.
Certainly you would be unaffiliated with NPC since your chapter is not
affiliated with one of the inter/national member groups. Good luck with
your project!

what 33girl meant is why 4 letters instead of 3 (ie- Sigma Kappa Pi)

cristinasmile 07-14-2003 11:09 PM

Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi

Oh.. I don't know--

So it's not SKEPi, but SKEP?

cristinasmile 07-14-2003 11:17 PM

Whether we remain as Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi or change the latter part after Sigma Kappa, that is up to the group. But we chose the name, partially because it's not being used by another group-

We see ourselves represented by SK.

Do you want to eventually affiliate with Sigma Kappa?

I agree with my fellow War Eagle (:D ). Make sure your letters have a meaning, and they arn't just letters that you think look good together!

cristinasmile 07-14-2003 11:59 PM

Yes, I realize this.

but I won't be there then.

I think alot of people on the board think you are planning on affiliating with Sigma Kappa, since you are modeling SKEPi so closely after SK. It's like if I started Delta Gamma Alpha, some would assume I plan to affiliate with Delta Gamma.

No.. no.. no!

We are no emulating Sigma Kappa. Our intentions is not to affiliate with NPC. We are a local sorority.

The history, colors, all that stuff... are being chosen by the current sisters. We are doing it ourselves. From scratch.

Maybe we should make this more clean to you....

You are not Sigma Kappa!

For the love of everything beautiful-

We are creating a social women's group in the hopes of someday becoming a sorority on our campus.

I know Sigma Kappa is copywrited and to call ourself that, you can't. SKEPi is not being used by NPC or any other chapted. I e.mailed them and they told me so.

We may use Sigma Kappa eirini Pi.

PM_Mama00 07-15-2003 12:03 PM

Then do not say "We see ourselves represented by SK".

The only people represented by Sigma Kappa are initiated sisters. I wish you could understand everyone's point.

AGDAlum 09-16-2003 06:01 PM

I don't know if the Mount Ida girls are still here....

But: seems to me you would choose your motto first (probably in English), then translate it into Greek, and there are your letters. That's what the existing NPC groups did.

The motto -- those special words that bind you in sisterhood -- is more important than finding letters that "look good" together.

BTW, IIRC Mt. Ida is a two-year college. Are NPC groups allowed at two-year schools? (Someone asked the Mt. Ida girls if they were going to petition NPC.)

Our motto isn't in greek, but in latin. We orignally started out as SDF but that was quickly changed once the founders saw that someone already had that name to the new name SDT . I don't know how SDT was chosen however.

SigKapKatzue 11-16-2003 07:13 PM

I don't know if the girls are around who wanted to emulate SK, but I am a bit offended that they said they see themselves as an SK.

I'm a Sigma Kappa and those letters mean a great deal of pride to me, not something that looks cute together. I feel that these ladies should choose a name tht doesn't look so close to my sorority.

I mean I don't see wh they're taking my first two letters :-(

Oh well-- Good luck Mt. Ida, I hope you changed the name.

Welcome to the party. You joined us late but this thread from the summer still has me scratching my head. Go do a search bec it came up on more than one board and get ready for a wild, wild ride.....

SigKapKatzue 11-16-2003 08:02 PM

DGMarie,

I am about to embark on that ride. Wish me luck.

<scratches head>

I'm confused and a bit disheartened. Wonder whatever happened.

DGMarie 11-16-2003 08:27 PM

http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=36344

SigKapKatzue 11-16-2003 08:36 PM
