HARD or SOFT?

Cookies.

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...PRj5wWxq-a12xH

How do you like them?

I went to an event and was eccccsthhatic (Mike Tyson voice) to see cookies. Unfortunately they were the crunchiest cookes ever. What saved them and my taste buds was that the chocolate chunks were soft and moist.

Does the hard or soft preference vary by the type of cookie?

Hard...soft...dry...moist....

...COOKIES.

Gusteau 12-11-2011 07:52 PM

I am most definitely on Team Soft Cookies.

We had to submit a snack list for our staff retreat, and I specifically requested soft chocolate chip cookies.

JDCookMS 12-11-2011 07:52 PM

Definitely soft...and warm. Lets face it, you can't get better than that "just out of the oven" taste.

KKGCaroline 12-11-2011 07:59 PM

Team Soft & Warm!

Jen 12-11-2011 08:00 PM

Soft.

Even with store bought I always go for the chewy over the crunchy.

ASTalumna06 12-11-2011 08:05 PM

Hard (oh baby!)

I LOVE Chips Ahoy from the fridge

knight_shadow 12-11-2011 08:12 PM

If I get hard, Chips Deluxe Rainbow Cookies

If I get soft, Chewy Chips Ahoy

This thread reminds me of the Golden Girls - Cupcake conversation lol

Team Soft is winning.

AGDee 12-11-2011 08:25 PM

Soft for sure. Slightly crispy on the very outer edge but soft and chewy on the inside is perfection though. Totally soft is better than totally hard.

MysticCat 12-11-2011 08:28 PM

Neither. I'll go with crisp. Cookies should not be hard or soft (blech to both), they should be crispy.

IrishLake 12-11-2011 08:39 PM

Crispy? MC, wth kind of cookies are crispy, besides wafers? I thin crispy is related to hard.

Is "cookies" a euphemism for something else? If so, I prefer no cookies right now. If I have a hard cookie, I tend to have a few contractions along with it.

Same here!

Now I want chocolate chip cookies...:(

nittanygirl 12-11-2011 08:41 PM

Soft!!!

As if I wasn't craving cookies enough all day, now I really want a package of those Chips Ahoy you put in the microwave. In the red bag.

Hopefully my roommate comes home w/cookies since she told her mom I was craving them.

Because I SERIOUSLY need them.

SWTXBelle 12-11-2011 08:41 PM

Depends on the cookie.

Gingersnap should be hard.
Pfeffernusse should be soft.
Chocolate chip should be soft.
Oatmeal should be hard.

Crispy is a version of hard.

Ya know what...nevermind...just leave the thread! Leave the thread NOW, I say! :p You're messing up the data.

ETA: IrishLake, yes, crispy is the less-sexy sibling of hard. No, these are not euphemisms. Why would you say that? Why would eating cookies give you contractions? ;)

Team Warm & Soft. Cold and Hard makes me think of dead people and I would rather not associate such things with my deliciousness.

I agree. Cannibalism and necrophilia are disgusting thoughts.

I like room temperature hard Oreos. I guess the only time Oreos should be soft and warm is when they have been in the oven or are fried at the state fair. SWTXBelle is correct that it depends on the cookie. Molasses cookies--the middle between hard and soft. Gingerbread cookies--hard but I'm open to allowing a soft one to tickle my taste buds.

. . . Oatmeal should be hard.

Not the oatmeal cookies I grew up on and make now. They're fairly thin and crisp. They're the best, as far as I'm concerned.

No, crisp would be between hard and soft. When I think of hard cookies, I think of things like overcooked, dry or just plain bad homemade cookies or of many store-bought cookies like original Chips Ahoy. Chips Ahoy could double as hockey pucks.

I would classify as crispy a good shortbread, my aforementioned oatmeal cookies, tea cakes (hey, it's Christmastime, and they're the traditional Christmas cookies of my childhood) or a good gingerbread cookie. I would also include Oreos or Vienna Fingers.

What, you think just because you started this thread, you own it? You are not the boss of me.

Besides, I didn't even bring up how unappealing chocolate chip cookies are. :p

christiangirl 12-11-2011 09:09 PM

I guess I technically prefer my Oreos soft because I prefer them after a dunk in some milk. That's not warm, though. But a soft cookie, straight out of the oven.....yes. Just yes. :)

SWTXBelle 12-11-2011 09:11 PM

Shortbread is neither hard nor soft. If it is perfect, it exists in a state of tension between the two - bottom is firmer, but top is buttery soft. It should literally melt in your mouth.

Now I need cookies and the house is currently cookie-free. :(

I am eating a NutterButter right now. Those are meant to be HARD.

Exactly! And that state of tension between the two is what I'm calling crisp. They're hard enough that there's a snap when you break them, but soft enough that there's no crunch when you chew them. If you have a better word than "crisp," I'm open to suggestions.

LOL backatcha. The gloves are off, Mr. Chief Justice. The only part of your previous post that I will address is your hatred for chocolate chip cookies. You have clearly never had a good one which is why you are confused over this whole cookies thing. I have put your vote under Team Hard. Team Soft is still winning.

Please send your baked goods to 2300 Jackson Street Gary, Indiana 46407. They will be hard when I receive them but I'll either dip them in milk or put them in the microwave for a few seconds. Much obliged.

RIFL, my good doctor. I didn't say I hate them. I said they are unappealing, which is quite a different thing. I do not hate them, but neither do I find them irresistible like some people do. It is very easy for me to pass them up, because I do not find them be worth the effort involved in chewing. I do not hate them; I simply don't want them.

You fail to grasp that you have an underlying problem that is undermining the credibility and reliability of your data: assuming that there are only two categories, hard and soft, and trying to force all cookies to fit those two categories. You compound that error by assuming all share your perception of hardness and softness. Tsk.

This is an evil peer review. I wish I had submitted my research to a different journal.

You can take or leave chocolate chip cookies. That's exactly how I feel about gingerbread cookies.

There are only two categories because "crispy" tolls the line. Would "crispy" become hard if left on the kitchen counter for 20 minutes?

(You have still been placed on Team Hard.)

cheerfulgreek 12-11-2011 09:54 PM

Soft.

No.

And I am content to be a team unto myself. If I am forced to be on Team Hard or Team Soft, I will just take my ball and go home. 'Cause that's how this cookie crumbles.

amIblue? 12-11-2011 10:00 PM

SOFT only crumbles when it's been sitting around for too long and has gotten HARD.

DrPhil 12-11-2011 10:15 PM

And SOFT stays SOFT longer if you put it in a ziploc bag with a slice of a loaf of bread in it.

To me, crisp = crunch. There is no "crunch" in what Belle described. When talking about a good shortbread cookie, I would call it firm, or perhaps dense. But crisp or hard.... no. They might be cohesive enough so that there is that snap when you break it in half, but the texture is not crispy nor crunchy.

I'll grant that crisp may not be the best word for cookies that aren't hard or soft. As I said earlier, I'm open to alternatives. Like you said with shortbread, it's not hard, but it's not soft either or it wouldn't snap.

I can think of lots of crisp things that aren't crunchy though.

But store-bought shortbread? Pale imitations.

IrishLake 12-11-2011 11:56 PM

I don't think I've ever had a shortbread as good as Panera Breads, and I've eaten a lot of cookies.

Pregnant lady is willing to be the judge in a cookie tasting contest. PM me if you'd like to mail me your submissions.

IrishLake 12-12-2011 12:03 AM

FYI, when I'm classifying soil in the field, and clay has a "snap" when it breaks apart, we call it "stiff."
