HGTV

This thread was inevitable. :) I know I'm not the only person who loves this channel and the website.

My favorite shows:

House Hunters
House Hunters International
Holmes Inspection
My First Place
Property Virgins

What are your favorite shows? :D
Care and share about HGTV. :D

DTD Alum 07-20-2011 06:38 PM

I work in real estate, and I love seeing the business portrayed objectively and realistically (unlike, say, Million Dollar Listing). Absolutely love Selling New York, although the commissions portrayed on the show are very misleading which bugs me (the commissions shown, mathematically, are for the brokerage AND the agent for BOTH sides of the transaction, but they are portrayed as what the agent for one side earns). I really like House Hunters because it is shocking to see the differences in value from one part of the country to the other, and House Hunters International is fascinating just because of the different types of property.

Don't really watch anything else, but love those three shows.

DrPhil 07-20-2011 06:45 PM

As for Bravo, I stopped watching Million Dollar Listing for that very reason. I still watch Flipping Out because they are hilarious and it shows some of the struggles of real estate.

As for HGTV, I love watching House Hunters in cities I have never lived in/am unfamiliar with because I always say "that house would've been $150K and not $500K" or "that apartment would've been $700/month and not $1,500/month."

Kappamd 07-20-2011 06:49 PM

My FAVORITE channel.

House Hunters
Property Virgins
My First Place
Design Star

And Mike Holmes....yeah, pretty much my hero.

AGDee 07-20-2011 06:52 PM

I like House Hunters. I also liked Property Ladder for a long time but I'm not sure they are still producing that one.

I wish someone would come in and re-do my house :)

The ones that focus on staging a house to sell it always crack me up. I always wonder if, after getting it all fixed up, the owner ever thinks "If it looked like this before, I wouldn't have wanted to sell it!"

knight_shadow 07-20-2011 06:56 PM

Yet another channel that makes me unproductive.

I don't know if they still show all of these, but these are the ones I watch/have watched:

Color Splash
Design On A Dime
My First Place
Design Star
FreeStyle
Mission: Organization

sceniczip 07-20-2011 06:58 PM

Love this channel!

Design Star
House Hunters
House Hunters International
The one where they show like 10 different homes for the same price in different areas.
The one where they show remodels (Bang for Your Buck?)
Sarah's House

joliebelle 07-20-2011 07:53 PM

House Hunters
House Hunters International
Professional Grade (I love seeing the homeowners win a boatload of cash)
Bang for your Buck
Property Virgins

I do like Yard Crashers too, even though that's on diy network

AnchorAlumna 07-20-2011 07:56 PM

I love it, too! My husband hates it...but since they took Turner Classic Movies off our cable, I catch him watching.
The problem is, the times I watch - 10 p.m. or later - the ONLY thing on is House Hunters, HH Int'l and Property Virgins.
Do they even have redecorating shows anymore?

IrishLake 07-20-2011 07:59 PM

Nothing. I like nothing about HGTV.

PiKA2001 07-20-2011 08:02 PM

I like all of the house hunting shows but my absolute favorite it Property Virgins. I'm actually considering trying to get on that show when the time comes to buy a house. I'm also convinced that Sandra Rigli-whatever is drunk in a few of the episodes.

Harsher words have never been spoken. :(

LOL @ PiKA. Let us know when your show aires so we can post all sorts of good and bad things about it. :)

IrishLake 07-20-2011 08:31 PM

lol, I had to throw a little bit of variety into this thread. :)

honeychile 07-20-2011 08:41 PM

Love HGTV, also love DIY. Especially Yard Crashers!

Benzgirl 07-20-2011 08:46 PM

1. Selling New York. Never miss an episode!
2. House Hunters International
3. House Hunters
4. Property Virgins (it shows how many people are clueless)

I absolutely hate Million Dollar Listing. I'm not sure if it is because I have zero interest in LA Real Estate or that I can't stand how unprofessional the brokers are.

Dutchie 07-20-2011 08:51 PM

I love House Hunters & Property Virgins. It's half the reason I go home for lunch :D

There used to be a show called Hidden Potential that I really liked, but Property Brothers is very similar so I watch that now.

I got hooked on Design Star last week, even though I'm usually not a huge fan of the decorating shows.

aggieAXO 07-20-2011 08:53 PM

The one with Scott McGillivray in it. I like to watch him work and flex his muscles:p:p

Totally forgot about Income property! Love watching that show (and Scott McGillivray;))

We've been watching that lately. I tell my husband that "his tv girlfriend" is on, but the show is pretty good. Also a fan of anything involving Mike Holmes, House Hunters/HHI and Income Property.

Do they ever re-run that show that Chris Harrison used to host, can't recall the name but they had three designers bid for a project? IIRC one ep was about a "jack and jill" bathroom with something ridiculous like a $40k budget. Unreal, but entertaining.

BuckeyeTriDelta 07-20-2011 10:37 PM

I can't watch HGTV until we are done selling our house...watching HGTV makes me all nervous about selling. Damn professionals making houses look amazing.

AnchorAlum 07-20-2011 10:43 PM

LOVE HGTV!

Favs are Selling New York, House Hunters, HH International, The Unsellables, Property Virgins, and all of Sarah's House whether it's the lake house or the complete re-dos she's done of the farm and the in-town houses.

Not sure I'll be a fan of Selling LA. Seems to be a bit more contrived, but maybe it's just me.

Flipping Out on Bravo is one of my favorite shows on TV. Jeff Lewis can be hysterical.

She's not drunk, she's just Canadian!:D

Not to hijack...but what do we think of Design Star 6?

What I think can be summed up in two sentences: one, THANK GOD they got rid of that weird format they used last year! Two, people really need to stop using orange. RELAX-highlighter orange bedroom designers should have been in bottom two first week...Meg of the orange box w/broken table leg room should have gone home instead of J. Just my opinion(s)...but I really think orange should be used sparingly in design.

(Steps down from anti-orange soapbox)

I wore Betsey Johnson all the time when I was in high school, then she fell off the radar. The next time I saw something made by her was in a catalog. It listed her XL as equal to a size 10. No matter what size I was, am, or will ever be would I wear her clothing again!

AGDee 07-24-2011 12:30 AM

My girlie likes Betsey Johnson accessories. I saw her on the HGTV show today too, Lynn. The necklace that the girlie bought in NYC is very cool. It's pearls in the shape of a necktie with bows all over it.

whatever happened to Myles of Style? I love:

Sarah's House
Design Star
My Favorite Place

DrPhil 07-24-2011 07:20 PM

I have learned that I tend to dislike the shows that aire during the weekend. I don't watch HGTV Friday evening to Sunday evening.

Completely forgot about that show. I like it too :)

A lot of these shows are on Hulu, so I catch them there from time to time.

Benzgirl 07-25-2011 09:29 PM

I'm so glad nobody mentioned Cash and Carie (sp). I couldn't watch that show. I was so boring.

it's amazing that she took a $50 rocking chair.. sanded, glazed and put on a new cushion.. then sold it for $900.

amIblue? 01-25-2012 08:57 PM

 Just watched an episode of House Hunters with an annoyingly picky 23 year old nurse in Charleston, SC. One thing that struck me in particular was that she was concerned that the guest bedroom had a small closet. I thought to myself, what are your guests going to be staying forever? Small closet is all anyone needs for even a week long trip.

The whiny demanding "Property Virgin" types just drive me over the edge.

I particularly love the House Hunters International episodes, mostly because I'll never get to live anywhere so exotic.

Mevara 01-25-2012 09:05 PM

I love Property Brothers and since I don't have cable I go to my moms have dinner and watch the show.

I can't stand HH Intnl but like to watch HH. We always like to guess which one they are going to pick. Although it seems like that is the only thing that is ever on when I go to watch.

AGDLynn 01-25-2012 09:09 PM

There is a new realtor on Property Virgin. Didn't like Sandra, don't like this one.

LOVE Sarah's House! (Houses..isn't she on her 3rd or 4th one, lol.)

LOVE LOVE Candace Olson...soooo badly want her to do my house!

Re: Holmes Inspection...wonder if "they" (govt or whomever) go after the shoddy builder and/or govt. inspector who signed off on that crap?

I get really tired of HH Intnl when it's yet another couple who want a vacation home in the Caribbean or Australia, but we really like the ones where someone is actually moving to Europe, Africa or Asia. It's interesting to see what the homes (and expectations and costs) are like in those places.

fascination 01-26-2012 08:13 PM

I love Sarah's House. Her decorating style is young and fun yet tasteful, but I don't understand why spends a gazillion dollars to gut out or add on to houses and ends up with no dedicated master bathroom. (The farm house she added a big bedroom wing onto and her personal lake cabin that she added a second floor to.) Who wants to buy a million dollar house and have to share your bathroom with the kiddies? She's a doll, though, and I love her sidekick Tommy.
