Pitt People Come Forth!
University of Pittsburgh greeks seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately- finally! I was getting lonely here! Let's hear what house you're in and how things are going in da Burg...
oh, and what's your favorite Primanti's sandwich while I'm at it? I'm kinda obsessed with their pastrami and cheese since I don't get home much! |
Hey I love Greek Life at Pitt! I was recently voted External Vice President of our Panhellenic so I must like it some what! I want to do a lot for the system, which I think is getting stronger! I want to boast the fraternities at Pitt for having the strongest rush in 10 years!
As for the sandwiches in the 'burgh all I have to say is ugh! I am a Philly girl so I have to vote for a Buffalo Chix Cheese Steak from Steak and Hogie Factory! |
Pitt people! Yeah! I think there's a couple others on here.
I just graduated, I'm a KD and was very active. I want to stay involved and keep the panhellenic going strong at Pitt. And as for primanti's.... not really my fave. Although one of my sisters works there :O) |
I know I don't technically count because I only got my Master's at Pitt and didn't pledge there, but I love the school and the Burgh is my favorite city!! It's all about the Smashed Potato Pizza at Fuel and Fuddle and Zaw's Asian Food in Squirrel Hill.
KappaStarboy, aka SigEpRaider, is a recent Pitt grad, August of 2001. He hates Primanti's, loves Pamela's...the one in Oakland...I used to live within walking distance of the one in Squirrel Hill and we would go there sometimes :) I only ate there once, on a date (not with KStarboy!). I think I had some kind of turkey sandwich. It was kinda bland, I had to put Tabasco sauce on it, but I'm willing to give it another chance when I go to visit this winter. |
Ya Pitt, Nice to see the Burgh represented here. I dont know about you guys but I'm missing the burgh can't wait to go back.
KappaStargirl was right when she said it was all about the Smashed potatoe pizza at Fule and Fuddle, its the best food anywhere. |
SigEp42- are you a current undergrad brother of Sig Ep?
Just wonderin', cause i just graduated. I don't know a whole lot of the SigEp's, but my sisters certainly do! |
I dont go to Pitt- but I live here in Pittsburgh! I love the city- I love Oakland! heh! We did have a chapter at Pitt, our Iota, but I dont know when they closed. Can anyone there find out for me? And- if you hear that your Panhellenic feels like expanding- nudge them toward Phi Sig! Pitt helped found our chapter at Clarion!
Annnnd, dood, Im up for some GC meetin- if anyone is in Pittsburgh at the moment... ;) |
I'm not sure when Phi Sig went off Pitt's campus.... i saw on your nationals webpage that the chapter was founded around 1924. I imagine it went dormant at around the same time my chapter did, in the 30's. We came back in 79 though.
I wish we could expand! For such a large school, our rush numbers aren't all that high, and a lot of girls drop out. Plus they usually don't run rush correctly- quota is almost ALWAYS too high. They set it before pref. But COBing has become huge on the campus (we COB'ed 12 out of the 23 members of our fall pledge class- i think just about every sorority COBed this year). I think if we did expand, Kappa Alpha Theta would probably try to go for it- they left several years ago very suddenly after a few bad rushes (they had been a huge house before) and still have a house here. I'm all about Pittsburgh Greeks! :O) |
Hey, Pitt people. :D
Can someone list all the sororities currently at Pitt? I've checked the Greek life page and the links have been "coming soon" (but of course not arriving) for probably, oh a year now. |
Current sororities at Pitt:
Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Epsilon Phi Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Phi Epsilon Delta Zeta Kappa Delta (that's me! yeah! :O) but i'm now an alumna :O( Kappa Kappa Gamma Sigma Delta Tau Sigma Sigma Simga Theta Phi Alpha And i'll try to find out about getting the webpage up. One of my sisters is current Panhell President and i spoke to her at length about ideas. I also think that one of my sisters applied to be webmaster at the end of the year. Next time i see one of them online i'll ask what's up. This is vital for recruitment! |
Thanks a bunch Dani! :)
|
I'm a Pitt alumna - but not a sorority member. I found GC a while back, wondering what I'd missed in college re: the Greek experience, and it's been fascinating reading the posts here on occasion.
Is Kappa Kappa Gamma still in the duplex that they shared with Kappa Alpha Theta? I don't know much about Greek life, but I was surprised to hear that "a few bad rushes" was enough to hurt Theta. Even among my fellow non-Greeks, Theta was known as an institution: great girls, long history at Pitt, nice-looking house, and I never heard a bad thing about them! Oh well, just wondering. I work downtown now and miss Pitt and Oakland... and the quiet lounges in the Student Union. A gal just can't find a quiet place to read downtown during her lunch hour! |
Yes, Kappa Kappa Gamma is still living in the duplex. Theta's half is occupied by independents.
I was surprised to when i learned the history of Theta on our campus. They had been very good, winning a ton of awards, always at total, then i guess they had a couple bad rushes and it just all went down. When i rushed in Fall of 99, they only had like 6 sisters (one of which was a middle aged woman....we never knew if she was an alum or a sister. She rushed us so i guess it was a sister. Very uncommon for our greek system), and had other chapters from nearby helping them. They only preffed one girl and went defunct from there. |

Yea Pittsburgh. I just graduated in summer of 2001 and moved to California. I'm moving back to Pittsburgh in December cause I miss the 'burgh. Hey SigEp42, who are you, casue I think I may know you since I'm a Penn Gamma Alum too.
|
Hey KDdanni,
Yes I am still an undergrad brother at Pitt and I actually know a bunch of your sisters a couple of the graduating seniors too. I went to your hayride and had a lot of fun. Oh and from what I hear Kappa Alpha Theta isn’t coming back because they can’t get back into their house since they technically went inactive; but that’s just what I heard and I hope I’m wrong I would love to see the Pitt Greeks grow. I hear there is talk of a multicultural sorority as well as an engineering social sorority, any news on that? Any other Pitt Greeks out there that still goes to Pitt? |
SigEp42- I've probably seen you around then :O)
I'm not sure what will happen with Kappa Alpha Theta. They own that house, and have choosen to hang on to it even though the sorority left. So who knows? I'd love to see them come back too, but unfortunately i don't think there's enough room in the sorority system for another house, we'll probably lose one or two eventually. I haven't heard about the Multicultural sorority. But multicultural at Pitt doesn't really seem to mean multicultural. I don't know if they'd be part of Panhel or not. As for the engineering social sorority, it does exist, and they have tried to become affiliated with Panhel, but we won't (and can't!) let them in because they only allow in engineering students, which is considered discriminating. I think they might be trying again, but they're going to get the same results. I'm so happy to see how many pitt greeks there are on here! |
Dani,
I saw your post about the different GLOs at Pitt and noticed that FIJI wasn't listed among the fraternities. Do you know when and why they left Pitt and what happened to their house? They were on Wallingford Street in North Oakland. |
i think Fiji's left the semester i pledged (Fall 99)
I"m not sure why, i think low numbers, but that's only what i remember being told. As pledges, we were kept pretty sheltered :O) |
I know what happened to the FIJI's although some of it I can't tell. My big sisters real brother was one of the last FIJI presidents. From what I understood they were on probation for something. Their neighbors hated them and wanted to get them kicked out of the house. The day beforethey were to go off probation they were rolling a ked into their house in preparation for the party when they got off of probation and their numbers got them in trouble. So then they lost their university charter but were still recognized by the fraternity, but then one of them did something else which lost them their nationals charter. So goes the rumor. When her brother went to grad school he still lived there with some alum and they had some parties there. I think they still own the house though.
As far as Kappa Alpha Theta goes, I was told, so I don't know if it is the truth or not, but I was told that they gave up their charter. They did bring in another chapter but i think it was too late, they should have done it my freshman year. There were only four girls left by my sophomore year. It's too bad too because one of their sisters was President of panhel my freshman year!! There's the scoop though. As far as them recolonizing, panhel would have to vote to let in a new sorority and probably would't do it as not everyone is at total. There would have to be an interest group there for them to start. Or at least that's what I was told!!!!! Hmm Primantis, I would say the chicken sandwhich although I'd rather go to mad mex for happy hour!!!! Wow that was a long message. I just graduated in 2001, but I still live in pittsburgh. |
Quote:
Fire, the next time KappaStarboy/SigEpRaider and I are in Pittsburgh, we are SO going to Mad Mex (but I've only ever been to the one in the North Hills) for happy hour. There is nothing on this earth like their curry chicken burrito. |
there is nothing like the oakland one!!!!!
I think I am going to go there for dinner now that I started to think about it!!!!! |
It is NO FAIR you guys talking about my native cuisine when I am not there to enjoy it!!!!! ;)
|
lol....I can't believe you called it your native cuisine!!!! lol
|
I'm not a Pitt greek, but I am another person who lives in the 'burgh now. My org (Kappa Delta!) was at Bethany College in WV. Ever heard of the school? Probably not! LOL
So does Pitt have fall recruitment or spring? I'm never clear on these issues... Also, what's cool to do here? I've been around a bit because I used to go to Duquesne....but I'm over 21 now. :) |
Pitt has both. We used to refer to fall as formal and spring as informal even though it technically should be considered formal as well. More people usually go through in the fall though. Oh and I have heard of Bethany college!!!!!!
|
yea pitt
alright it is so good to know there are people from my home aways from home on here, i had no idea, now there are other people who actually know what im talking about when i miss fuel and fuddle nachos and mad mex burritos, mmmmm, i cant wait to go back,
i would just like to say hi to my absolute favorite sig ep in the whole wide world and my rush chair bud, sigep42, dont worry well survive this fall, barely but we will survive, anyway i think it is kinda sad that for such a large school our greek system is so small but at the same time when i walk around campus i feel like i know so many people just from being greek, so im glad i get to talk about pitt with people who get it, :) hannah AEPHI |
Hey! I don't go to Pitt (main) but I do go to Pitt-Johnstown, so I thought I'd drop in and say hello. :) I am an Alpha Gamma Delta sister there. Well, actually right now I'm an alumae because I transfered but I've now reapplied, so hopefully I'll be an active member again in the fall.
|
Yay Pittsburgh! :-D
I'm from/go to college in northwest PA, but I spend a lot of time in the 'burgh. Primantis rules, but I only have one thing to say besides that: The Origianal Hotdog :-P It's a cult thing with me and my friends... lol |
Quote:
OMG, ThielGirlie, me too!!! I love that place. When I was in college, I'd buy a large O-Fries with cheese, pull out a book and park myself at one of the tables next to the window facing Bouquet Street and it never failed that within 20 minutes my table would be full because friends would be passing by, see me and my O-Fries and take it upon themselves to come in and "help me out" :) Lots of my favorite Oakland hangouts are gone :( but if there is one place I hope is there forever, it's the O! |
A LARGE O fries? How in the HELL did you even begin to put a dent in it?????? Small is more than enough for one. And i'm not a dainty eater either :O)
I love the O, haven't had it in a few months. Now that i live in Shadyside, it's a bit further of a walk then down from Amos :O) And Hannah- welcome to the board! |

I decided to bump this up because what can I say, it's been pretty boring lately in the burgh.
is anybody doing any fun events this year?? |
Well, its about 11 pm, and about 90 degrees here in South Oakland, and I am about to roast to death.. You never know how great airconditioning is untill you dont have it. Nowadays, I spend most of my time in the OAFA office in the airconditioning.. Mmm Yeahhh...
Anyhow, Im super psyched that Pitt people are starting to show up around these parts.. Ive been around for about a year now, and this place is a great resource... And can I even say that I may know a few of ya'll?? :) I think my fav Oakland Eatery is Joe Mamas (Have you been there yet, Tracy?).. Im especially infatuated with the Italian Wedding soup... And is anyone else out there super psyched for recruitment?? I Am!! Yet, I digress.. I hope everyone is having a great summer and having an easier time then me keeping cool!! |
I feel your pain, TPA Rose! I live in Shadyside, with no air, and i'm just melting. Went to the grocery store today, ice cream is on sale, by the time i got home (a couple minute drive) it was soft as a pillow! ARGH!
Hehe, OAFA is freezing. I used to work there, i was a pathfinder for about a year and a half and an FPC for two summers. But now i work in the basement of that wonderful freezing building. But yeah, this weather in Pittsburgh sucks. And i'm happy to see Pittsburgh representing on Greekchat! |
I totally feel your pain as far as the heat goes. It's been so hot that just thinking makes you sweat! lol
Just think of all those people taking summer classes in the cathedral of learning!! If I were I'd be lugging a fan around campus to all of my classes......... |
mmmm... o-fries ..... i'm definitely not a pitt person (i question myself daily why i chose to go to school in b-f meadville) but i couldn't resist, i gotta show my love for good ole oakland and da burgh :D i was just down at fuel n fuddle last nite for my best friend's 21st birthday..... my one friend managed to make a small dent in his fnf beer bible.... i think he only has 60 some to go, lol ;)
|
Sweetie ADPi, I'm trying to think which school you go to but I can't remember what's up there!
Libby! I'm glad you're still around GC! Seriously let me know if you're coming home at all this summer and I'll take you to lunch one day :) |
kddani- Im actually a pathfinder now.. Its really horrible, because it means that I have to leave the wonderful AC in order to tell people about how great Pitt is :) What department do you work with in the basement? Chances are I might have seen you before because we get to push around the infernal "snack cart" :p
Tracy- Ive been doing the whole lurking thing throughtout the year.. I dont have a lot of time to sit down and do much of anything anymore :) I dont think that Im going to be able to get down to Naptown untill August, but if I have some free time, Ill definantly get in touch with you. If not this summer, then in January. Ill be keyed up in Maryland three months before I go to study abroad, yeay!! Things that I love about the burgh- Half priced menus, sumbrero man, India Garden, living two doors down from Mellingers, The Cathedral of Learning, Feul and Fuddle "Kick Gas Nachos",Sisters, friends, Schendly park, Free food at the Pete Center this week, O fires, Ghetto Fab, Walmut Street, Ross Park Mall, three rivers art festival, Big houses in Squirell hill, Joe Mamas Soup, Peters Pub.. Cumpies "The Fruit Stand"?!! I hope you all have a Happy Fourth!! |
TPAROSE- Pathfinders can be fun, but it wasn't a job i could keep for a long time. I know what you mean, i remember doing programs in the summer, giving a walking tour, then a bus tour, then within a minute of when i got off the bus tour being made to do another walking tour. We had popscicles that program, and i had just started one when they told me to give a tour. So try that! Walking backwards, talking, and trying to eat a friggin' popsicle all at the same time.
I work for the Technology Help Desk right now, it's in a room within the lab. We don't get subjected to the snack cart because we have our own little mini-mart in the break room. They started that thing right around the time i left. Thank god i never had to push it around! HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY TO EVERYONE! I'm going down to the point with my roommate, is anyone else? |
