2011 New Year's Resolutions

Spill it!

Drolefille 12-27-2010 08:12 PM

I don't know yet, but I've almost completed my reverse resolution - ending on New Year's Eve - of giving up soda. I don't know if I'll go back to it or not.

lovespink88 12-27-2010 10:30 PM

I'd like to say stop biting my nails, but that will never happen.

tld221 12-27-2010 11:14 PM

It's a growing list:

--Be more Type A: making plans, sticking to them, organized. These things make me anxious and drive me crazy in other people, but I see how it benefits them.
--Read more: for leisure, anyway. My friends and I have started our book club again, so that should help.
--Manage my energy: this article I read for work was pretty smart abuot managing energy versus time. I hate waking earlier but I could get so much more done if I got to work an hour earlier, actually taking a lunch break away from my desk and actually excersizing (perhaps starting weekly yoga again?)

You'd be surprised I was taking a course and in it a test had been done where people who bite they're nails are more likely to smoke and from that day I stopped! I think smoking is a horrible habit and I've watched both my parents try to quit for years. I wasn't getting into that! lol Silly I know

Benzgirl 12-28-2010 06:37 PM

My biggest goal is to get to bed earlier every night so that I can get up with plenty of time to work out before work. Currently, I get to bed between 11:00 and 11:30 and have a difficult time getting up at 5:30. I would like to cut that to between 10:30 and 11, and ultimately BY 10:30

AZTheta 12-28-2010 06:46 PM

Only one: to simplify and let go of all the *stuff* that is blocking my energy (literally and figuratively). Check back in a year and see how I did.

Tulip86 12-28-2010 07:00 PM

Losing a few pounds by working out on a regular basis. I don't need to lose weight, as my weight is healthy, but I feel better when just a few pounds lighter.

Finish graduate school and find a job.

Enjoy life more, relax to enjoy the moments that I'm doing nice things instead of being worried of what I should be doing.

KKGCaroline 12-28-2010 07:10 PM

1) I'm going to stop biting my nails too - its a horrible habit and one i've been ashamed of for a while.

2) I'm going to lose a few pounds (well more than a few) before my vacation in May.

3) I'm going to look into adoption (I found out a while ago that kids are not going to happen for DH & I - a little sad - but we know there is a kid out there for us)

thetaj 12-28-2010 07:12 PM

Mine is to be able to consistently pass the coast guard rescue diving physical fitness test. I don't want to be a rescue diver, it's just a structured goal to get in good shape all around. It shouldn't be that hard, which is good because I don't have time to get in like life-changing shape lol. I think I want to be able to do that by July 1 and in April I'll start thinking about a goal to meet by the end of the year. Anyways it's this:

• Swim -- 500 yards, non-stop, using side or breast stroke -- 14 minutes
• Rest -- 10 minutes
• Push-ups -- 42 push-ups in 2 minutes
• Rest -- 2 minutes
• Sit-ups -- 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
• Rest -- 2 minutes
• Pull-Ups -- 6 pull-ups, no time limit. Palms facing away from the body
• Rest -- 10 minutes
• Run -- 1.5 miles 12:45 time limit

ColdInCanada11 12-28-2010 07:58 PM

I've decided that I'm going to read at least one book for personal enjoyment a month, hopefully 2 books every 6 weeks. I want to be able to enjoy literature again!

tnxbutterfly 12-28-2010 09:19 PM

This just a particial list.

1) Get a job. (I quit my job mid december and my last day is Thursday) so come Jan 3rd, I'll be unemployed:eek:

2) study, register, and take the gre

3) apply to graduate school for library science

4) get accepted to said graduate program and enroll

5) get a handle on my debt

ThetaPrincess24 12-28-2010 09:36 PM

1) get back in shape (I had to give up my pilates & zumba classes in light of recent family deaths/surgeries and I gained back the inches I lost. I start back on Monday with three pilates classes per week, a weight workout class for women, yoga, & zumba)

2) declutter my house--over the next three-four months I hope to go room to room, closet to closet and get rid of unnecessary items and stuff that hasnt been used/worn in a year or more.

3) convince the hubby to declutter the garage

4) convince hubby it's a good idea to have a baby. I think I'll have better luck with the garage but I'm going to try anyway! :)

aephi alum 12-28-2010 10:20 PM

I've already started on one of my New Year's resolutions, and that's to cut back on the amount of alcohol that I drink. I am trying to move from moderate to light/social alcohol consumption. In the past few weeks, I have lost a bit of weight, my clothes fit better, and I have more energy.

Starting with the new year, I am planning on cooking more often, getting some daily exercise even if it's just a walk to the corner and back, and doing some more knitting and cross-stitch (I have so much yarn that there is a room in my house known as "the yarn room").

southbymidwest 12-28-2010 10:48 PM

1) Stop being such a worrywart.

2) Start up yoga again.

2) De-clutter the house. Now that the girls are adults/in college, I really have to let go of some stuff.

3) Realize and appreciate that said daughters are adults.

XAntoftheSkyX 12-28-2010 10:59 PM

-Get my tour body back
-Blog more
-Get my debt under control
-Move out of my parent's house

als463 12-28-2010 11:19 PM

*Learn not to be so judgmental.
*Get back into shape.
*Study for the GREs (and do well on them).
*Apply (and get accepted) into a Ph.D. program.

Kappamd 12-29-2010 12:52 AM

-Lose the weight I've put on this fall.
-Start studying for my boards.
-Kick ass on said boards come June.

I quit doing that when I was on a trip to Europe. It was 3 weeks long and I always heard that's what it took to break a habit, so I would not let myself bite my nails at all during that trip and it worked! Set a certain goal that say "by valentine's day I want to have long pretty nails" A concrete date & reminder was perfect for me. I felt proud of myself for quitting!

1) Get back into the gym
2) Point out more reasons I have to be happy and less I have to complain about
3) Limit my "bum" days to once a week at the most (less sweatpants & hoodies)
4) Set aside a real bed time and wake up time even for days I could sleep in
5) Spend less money eating on campus

Every year I keep hoping I'll kick that nasty habit once and for all, but the best I've been able to do is quit for a few months at a time. Then once my nails start breaking because they're too long, I start biting them again. Maybe now that I'm working I'll be able to afford a regular manicure!

Good for you! I'm an adoptive mom to a 7-year old boy and have dealt with infertility as well. PM me if you'd care to chat - I'd be more than happy to share my experience with you.

My one major resolution for this year is to FINALLY clean out our home office. I've let it become a pigsty and it is beyond embarrassing. At this point, only a flamethrower might help this mess!

I don't know, my nail biting addiction is pretty bad. The "sure fire" way to quit that many people have told me about was to just get fake nails. Yeah, no. Once those started to grow out I bit those off completely.

It doesn't hurt to try though!

thetygerlily 12-30-2010 09:37 PM

I want to buy more local produce, and therefore incorporate more fresh produce in my diet. That'll be good for my (and my husband's!) health, weight, recipe creativity, local farmers, and the environment. I've started to look into a weekly delivery service to take out some of the hassle & excuses.

SWTXBelle 12-30-2010 10:47 PM

So cliche - but gypsyboots is getting married in January 2012, and I have GOT to be at least 20 lbs. lighter. Now that I once again have Armour (actually, it's another manufacturer, but same deal) thyroid medication again, I may have a chance!

TruRHOyalty22 12-30-2010 10:56 PM

1. Stop eating fast food.

2. Stop drinking sodas.

3. Lose a few pounds

4. Promote my photography business

ree-Xi 12-30-2010 11:55 PM

I rarely write resolutions, but I've realized that unless I know where I want to go, I'll never get there. These are the things I want to accomplish on some level. Even taking a few steps might be enough to enact change or find fulfillment.

1. Continue blogging with a purpose (I have just started).
2. Be more proactive in treating my disease on a daily basis. Doing little things that add up, even when I'm already feeling beat down.
3. Find at least one or two opportunities to act in the coming year. Taking a class or two to renew connections and refresh skills.
4. Film another script that I've written, possibly episode 2 of our web series.
5. Have more "adventures" with my hubby.
6. Take a real vacation this year (it's been four years).
7. Buy and make great use of the state Beach Pass. It's $60 for the entire season, and it's only 45 minutes away.
8. Stay out of the hospital for more than 6 months at a time.
9. Go out of my way to make my mom, who is always miserable, happy when I can, even if she drives me nuts.
10. Give a homeless kitty a forever home, providing a new brother or sister for my 4-year old cat, and a new baby for us to love.

Good luck to everyone who hopes to make changes in the upcoming year. Let's revisit this thread next December to see what we've managed to do!!

Yeah that didn't work for me either. I bit mine off as well. The goal thing worked for me (usually doesn't for me, but on a fluke it did)
Either way good luck!!!! You'll be so proud of yourself when you stop

Drolefille 12-31-2010 01:17 AM

I'm finishing my thesis. One way or the other.

Gusteau 12-31-2010 02:31 AM

Re: Nail biting - the only thing that got be to stop was getting braces (Invisalign) that made it absolutely impossible to bite them. Sorry that doesn't help you lovespink - womp womp.

I don't really do resolutions - they're a little too abstract for my taste. I am, however, working through an end of the semester reflection that will hopefully help me assess the past semester, and set goals for next semester and beyond. (graduation - eek!)

AGDee 12-31-2010 02:53 AM

I don't really do resolutions per se, but I do have some goals that I hope to accomplish in 2011 including:

1) Passing the CISSP exam
2) Finding a job in IT security

I've been working on #2 with no results so far but I'm pretty confident that if I can achieve #1, then #2 will follow quickly. The biggest obstacle right now is finding $600 to pay for the CISSP exam .. within the next 3 weeks <sigh>. Otherwise, I have to wait until May to take it and I'll be in the middle of a class then, which would royally stink.

als463 12-31-2010 05:46 PM

So, I just passed the Notary exam for New York! My goal is to be a great Notary but, also to work towards and pass the CASAC exam for Chemical Dependency! I'm already in the field but, this will definitely help me become a QHP before getting my LMSW. This year, I'm going to set reasonable goals!

PhoenixAzul 12-31-2010 07:26 PM

- Break 4 hrs in the marathon (reach goal: qualify for Boston!)
- Do at least two tris this year.
- Try hard to be more approachable and to reach out and make new friends in my new part of the country. Subhead: Get more involved in Oklahoma. Letters already sent to girl scouts and Catholic charities.
- Save the $ needed to successfully apply to emigrate to Britain. We've got all the other qualifying factors, but have to prove "support", meaning that we wouldn't sign on to the dole the second we landed. Which is fine, but it means $4300 needs to be squirreled away. A savings plan is in the works!

KSUViolet06 12-31-2010 09:11 PM

I don't make resolutions. My goals for the year:

I want to get a grant or assistantship for my grad program.

I want to start off with a 4.0 (in my previous program, I had that. I'd like to continue the streak!)

Come to GA; there isn't a Notary exam ( at least the last 2 times I've gotten mine and then renewal, I just had to have a form signed by witnesses.)

PNM20 12-31-2010 11:32 PM

1) Continue on losing weight. I'd like to be back at my size 4. (weight isn't bad right now, just really want to be back at old weight).

2)Find a guy who isn't a complete jerk/oblivious/slow/(list could go on)...

3) Convince my parents to let my study abroad in Switzerland and Italy over the summer!

4)Apply and get into a field study.

5)Be a cleared AIC (attendent in charge) with my station (I am an EMT)!

6)Find/join a sorority that will be right for me ;)

Drolefille 12-31-2010 11:37 PM

I have thought of one or two.

I'm going to complete my thesis, and I'm going to run.

And if I get that done, I'm looking for a new job.

ily 01-02-2011 12:11 AM

I said I wasn't going to set Resolutions this year but I would JUST DO IT- so here it goes.

1. get to know my professors better
2. decide if I really want to so to law school or would grad. school be better
3. raise my overall g.p.a
4. get in better shape
5. I will not let fear stop me from gaining what I really want

amanda6035 01-02-2011 02:07 AM

I'm going to finish paying off my car. I started Dave Ramsey's Total Money makeover in February 2009. We've paid off just over $36K in debt since then, and we're in the home stretch of the remaining $6K now....once thats done, all we'll have left is student loans and mortgage. :D

I'm going to lose at least 20 pounds by May, when hubby and I plan to start trying to conceive. I have much more weight than that to lose, but my goal now is to get as healthy as possible so that hopefully, we will get pregnant quickly and have a safe, healthy pregnancy.

I'm going to dust off the daily devotional that I bought last year, that I never cracked open. :( Hopefully I can get with it this year....

Ohio has an exam that takes about 5 minutes. To renew just takes a fee at the courthouse.

Ohh! Well in that case, there's hope for me yet!

Every person who had suggested the fake nails thing to me had a look of "OMG YOU'RE SCREWED" whenever I had told them that I had bitten the fake nails off. :o
