Places people have gotten engaged!

So, I'm working at the ice rink Turkey day and I see a couple get engaged on the ice in front of the union square x-mas tree (San Francisco). It was sweet. He was down on his shaky knee and she did the "OMG" hands over mouth and she started to cry. After they were done, I offered to and ended up taking a picture of them.

What's your story or have you seen a couple get engaged?

LouisaMay 11-30-2010 02:13 PM

Aww...what a sweet topic. I've never seen anyone get engaged, and I was just in my college apartment when my guy popped the question. I hope other people have some good stories to share.

In a hotel room...

We were getting ready to go out to dinner for our anniversary and I gave her her gift. It was a scrapbook type of picture book of pictures we had taken over the years. The last page/picture was a picture of the ring with the caption "Will you marry me?". I then dropped to my knee, lip quivering, hands shaking and proposed. I didn't hear myself say the actual words but she said yes lol.

I saw that a friend from high school got engaged at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World last week. Now that would be awesome. :)

:D

We were at the Magic Kingdom at Disneyworld. We had just finished dinner at Cinderella's Table in the castle when he got down on one knee. He had called ahead to set it up so they would get our picture, and give us a good table by the windows overlooking the park. It was pretty much perfect. I cried, the strangers at the next table cried, and the whole restaurant clapped after I said yes. I will NEVER forget it. :)

I'm jealous. Disney World is one of my favorite places EVER.

I was working Winter Wonderland - a mile-long drive-through Christmas lights display and the people working security saw a car pulled over at one point. When they checked to see what was going on, they found out that the guy had stopped to propose to his girlfriend.

KSUViolet06 11-30-2010 02:58 PM

A really good friend of mine from church got engaged via a cute little clue hunt.

It started at her house, where a clue told her to go to her best friend's house where Best Friend had the next clue. This clue told her to go to the local park (with best friend who was taking pics the entire time).

Once she got to the park, she found a clue that told her to follow the hiking trail and see where it led. Along the trail, there were 24 roses (a rose for every month that they were together).

At the end of the trail, her fiance was waiting with the ring. He asked her to marry him and she said yes. He then led her to a limo that took her to her parent's restaurant where all of her friends and family were there to celebrate their engagement.

The best part of this was that Best Friend was following her and taking pics the entire time, so there are pictures of her reaction to every moment which is really cute.

They got married in 2009!

Shut the front door! That's how my husband proposed to me! :D It wasn't a scrapbook so much as just a photo album, and it was just pictures from a roll of film he had just developed. But the very last picture was one of him on bended knee holding the ring. He was in the kitchen while I was looking through the photos. I sat there for a few minutes, thoroughly confused. He finally yelled "Are you coming in here or not?" I said yes when I walked in the kitchen though. ;)

AlphaFrog 11-30-2010 03:24 PM

By the way, I've been engaged twice and still have yet to get an honest-to-God proposal. :p

Scully 11-30-2010 04:03 PM

I know of both an ice rink and Disney proposal! One couple had gone skating at Rockefeller Center in the weeks leading up to Christmas. He had booked a private skate and when the rest of the crowd cleared off the ice, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him and the spectators cheered!

Another girlfriend of mine was down in Disney World with her mother on vacation. As a surprise, her boyfriend flew down to Florida for the day, and found out when she and her mother would be right in front of Cinderella’s castle. My girlfriend spotted him through the crowd and he walked up and proposed at the castle!

My husband completely threw me off as he made reservations at Tavern on the Green a week after Valentine’s Day. He got down on his knee and proposed during dessert. I was in shock! I think I cried in my cheesecake.

And um, what if she had said no? Could have been a very awkward moment!

KSUViolet06 11-30-2010 05:21 PM

^^^I know, right? But they had been talking marriage and such for quite some time. I tend to think that you don't plan stuff like that unless you have a good idea of what she likes and whether she'll say yes. lol.

SMTTT 11-30-2010 05:29 PM

When I went to the Harry Potter premire, there was this guy who got up and started playing the guitar and singing (Hey Soul Sister) to this girl in the front row. I thought, what in the hell...

Then when he finished he got up and proposed to her =) She said yes. Everyone was freaking out! It was pretty awesome.

aephi alum 11-30-2010 07:35 PM

My husband proposed to me at the 180 Smoot mark on the Mass. Ave. bridge. He wanted to propose when we were halfway across, with the Boston skyline as a backdrop - but the exact halfway point is marked "Halfway to Hell" and that wasn't the message he was after.

We will always be able to point out the exact spot where he proposed. Plus, he was planning to throw me in the river if I said no. (I think he was joking. ;) )

PhoenixAzul 11-30-2010 07:42 PM

My husband proposed to me in Belfast, Northern Ireland at midnight in front of Queen's University. He had planned to wait til the next morning and ask me in the botanic gardens, but we were both restless and had slept off most of our jet lag, so we went out for a walk. And as we were getting around the university, he starts talking about how much he loves me, and how much he likes to be together, and saying some of our inside jokes, which is not that uncommon...so when he stopped and got down on one knee and said, "So for all of that, would you be my wife?" and gave me my beautiful ring. Of course, I said yes :). There were two security guards out on rounds when he did this, and they cheered us and honked their horn.

What a guy, he had managed to smuggle the ring with him the entire way from home to Belfast without me noticing.

I've seen quite a few at the marathons I've done, and even one couple getting married WHILE running (which was awesome).

Gusteau 11-30-2010 09:09 PM

The AOII Chapter at my university just posted a video on their facebook fan page of a chapter alumna getting engaged on the stage during a beauty pageant. Apparently they had met and fallen in love working on pageants together. He gave her a sash that said "will you marry me?"

On an unrelated note - does anyone think the down on one knee thing is cheesy? I'm pretty traditional but I always want to roll my eyes when I see or hear about it. I'm going to opt for a romantic proposal sans dirty pant knee.

I think I would be so excited, I would completely forget whether he had knees or not. Lol!

KSUViolet06 11-30-2010 10:10 PM

My only "thing" with any future hypothetical proposal is that it NOT be in a public place. PLEASE.

At someone's home with some of our family around, ok.

The grocery store, mall, the zoo, anywhere where people are going to see/clap/watch---nooo.

I tend to not like things that involve being center of attention. It freaks me out. LOL.

I can def appreciate public proposals and think they're cute when I get to witness them, but never would want to be on the reeceiving end of it.

PS. a couple got engaged at the Jay-Z/Eminem concert in Detriot when I was there.

Hahahaha I though the same thing. "Dude, what if she said 'no'!!!! But they must have talked about it or he wouldn't have....I hope."

I've never seen anyone get engaged, I just realized.

Penn State and Syracuse

Oooohhhhh....I LOVE this topic! Both my fiance and I are Penn State graduates. It was at Penn State where we began to get serious. We graduated from the same high school, as well. He was active Navy while I was a full-time undergrad at Penn State. He received his A.A. from there and I received my A.A., 2 B.A.s and my M.Ed. all from there-so, we both bleed blue and white.

Anyway-this July, we were driving back from Ohio, after cleaning out my apartment. I had decided, earlier in the school year, that I just didn't want to be a lawyer but, instead I wanted to get my MSW. Fortunately, he agreed that it would be a good idea because I could move back to NY and be with him (as I attended-if I got into) at SU. I was bummed out as we drove home from Ohio because I felt as though I had let other people down-since I chose another path for myself. He said, "Hey-I know you love Penn State and we didn't get to make it back for THON...so, let's stop there on the way back to NY." I thought it was odd because it was a little out of the way (by about an hour or so). I agreed.

We parked on campus, in the garage, and walked over to the Creamery. We got ice cream and he said, "Hey-let's go check out the Lion Shrine." Once again, I thought...."This is weird. Why? Usually people go there for pictures with it for graduation, legacy pictures, etc." I said, "We've been to the shrine and we didn't bring cameras. Why?" He convinced me that it would be nice and it would cheer me up. We went to the shrine and we walked around it. I looked around and said, "Ummmmm....okay-we've seen it. We should probably go home, now." That's when I walked around the edge of it and he was on his knee. The week before he had kissed me on the "kissing bench" at Syracuse University. He told me during the proposal that he kissed me on the kissing bench because it was said that whoever you kiss on the bench is who you marry. I was in tears and so was he. It was great! It was the perfect place for us! I love how he incorporated both Penn State and Syracuse University!

We are having a fall wedding...at none other than....Penn State

My fiance proposed to me in his room at home. I was on his bed on his laptop and he had just gotten done taking a shower, because we were planning on going out. He just asked me if I could shut down the laptop, and when I asked why, he just said because. So I did and he pulled me off the bed so that I was standing across from him. He told me to close my eyes, so I did, and he lifted my hand and pulled off my promise ring, and told me to open my eyes and of course the open ring box was there when I did. Then he popped the question, I cried and said yes, of course :)

Even though I didn't get the traditional "down on one knee" proposal, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I actually love the more spontaneous proposals rather than planning it out . Don't get me wrong, I love the romantic ones in movies and stuff, but I think it takes alot of guts to NOT plan something and just do it when the time is right. Love your story :)

sanjiyan69 12-01-2010 12:32 AM

I proposed to my wife at TGI Fridays over some vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. And yes, I did the cheesy one-knee-down and popped the question.. No one clapped or cheered. It was nice and quick. lol

A girl I knew from high school had this happen! Maybe it was the same girl, but I'm sure that's happened more than once, haha. Such a cute idea.

My fiancé surprised me at the O-phi-A national convention in July. Planned an amazing night for the two of us, and proposed in the City Gardens park in downtown, St. Louis, Missouri. I then got to do a candle pass at banquet the next night to reveal the engagement to my sisters :D

I proposed while we were on a hike at one of my wife's favorite national parks. But I was careful to do it when no one else was visible on the trail. (I think she was wondering why I kept looking back so much.)

Best view in the city - because you can't SEE the gosh-darn ugly thing when you're standing in it. ;)

My cousin's now-husband was playing soccer in Uruguay (Paraguay?) and they hadn't seen each other in a long time. He came home without telling her and fixed it with my Aunt to come over that night. So my cousin got home from work and my Aunt was in the kitchen so she yelled "Quick, come in here I'm going to drop this!" So my cousin in typical fashion comes strolling in and there he was down on one knee. She was more happy to see him than to be engaged. My Aunt video taped the whole thing. It was sooo cute.

I got engaged at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. It was very sweet and private. I wouldn't have minded a big public thing, but to be honest, I did prefer it being just us. The funny thing is that since he wanted it to be private, we walked on a trail to the very edge of the place--where there wasn't even any really pretty scenery or anything, haha. We just walked up to the top of a big grassy hill and he asked me there. It was still wonderful :)

I was sort of part of an engagement once too. I used to play travel softball during high school and we had a softball tournament in Disney World. (It was awesome, the pitcher's circle had Mickey ears on it!) Anywho, before the game, the coach from the other team came up to our coach and told him that he was planning on proposing to his g/f, who was the assistant coach of the other team, right after we did ground rules. He asked that instead of having just the captains meet at home plate for ground rules, that each team line up on the baseline to watch. The ump was in on the whole thing too. Anyways, after they went over ground rules, the ump asked "Does anyone have any questions?" and the guy said "I do". He reached in his pocket, got down on one knee and popped the question. The girlfriend was SO shocked, it was fantastic! Everyone went crazy (both teams and the whole crowd).

And then the other team whooped our asses :( lol

KSUViolet06 12-08-2010 08:13 PM

There is an ice-skating rink in downtown AK (just for the holidays) and I'm fairly certain that someone gets engaged down there every night. It's the ideal setting for a Christmas proposal.

sceniczip 12-08-2010 11:45 PM

^^^truth lol. What is it about ice skating rinks?
The one time BF went ice skating he was part of tearing a girl's ACL (they crashed, I heard it was ugly, it was before I knew him lol) so I doubt he'll be popping the question at any ice rink!

I threw a surprise party for my parents' 20th wedding anniversary and my boyfriend proposed after the party. He had such a nice idea planned, and I totally ruined it.

First, he wanted me to go for a walk down to our lake and I was adamant about not going. I was tired, had already had a few drinks, and it was dusk, so I knew the mosquitos would be awful. Consequently, I whined and refused to go. He insisted as did my dad, so I finally went. But the sun had already set, so it was not nearly as beautiful as he had hoped.

When we finally got there, he put my grandmother's ring in his shirt pocket. (He always fidgets with it, so I didn't suspect anything out of the ordinary.) However, we were at a lake, so I wanted the ring back before it fell in the water. He told me to reach in his pocket, where I pulled out....

my grandmother's ring, instead of my engagement ring. I crammed the ring back on my finger and started walking back to the party. He had to yell, "I am trying to propose!" so I would stop in my tracks.

Poor kid. He tried so hard and I ruined it.

Awwwww.

That reminds me of my friend from youth group's story, it was kind of a "bad day ends with proposal" story.

Her boyfriend had this nice evening planned that included a show at a dinner theater (with her parents/family), where he would propose.

Show is at like 8pm. He tells her to be ready at 7:00 to go to this show (she does not know her parents are coming or anything).

Day of the show comes and someone at his workplace gets fired. So he has to stay late. He calls her and tells her he'll be running late but he'll be at her house by 7:30 at the latest.

Wrong. He doesn't even leave work til 7:30. He is worried because they have reservations, her parents are meeting them, etc.

He calls her and she is super upset. She had a patient die at work, he is running late, she can't find the outfit she wants to wear. She told me she was pretty much having the worst day she'd had in a long time. She ends up crying on the phone about how she is upset about today, doesn't want to go, and he should have called and changed the reservations when he knew he was going to be late.

So, he gets off work and drives like a bat out of hell to go home, get ready, pick her up, and pick up her parents. He gets to her house (they are late for the show at this point) and she is NOT READY. She is still halfway in her work clothes, crying about her terrible day and asking if they can just do this some other day. He says NO WE HAVE TO GO TODAY because it's the last night of this show and I invited Couple Friends from out of town (lie).

So she's like "OMG Mike seriously, i'm not going. Call and tell them we'll go to the next showing this weekend." He says "I can't." Back and forth ensues and they both get annoyed. He tells her to just throw something nice on and go. She agrees (not happy).

The whole way there, she reminds him of how she just had a patient die today, she doesn't have time, she's so tired, and he should've been on time. To the point of an almost argument.

They FINALLY get to dinner theater at 8:45! She (still annoyed) is like "WTF are my parents doing here? What is going on?" when they pull up in the parking lot. He says he just happened to mention it to them at family dinner last week and they just decided they'd come.

They get there in the middle of the show. Dinner is not really warm. She is still annoyed but happy to see her family. At the end of the night he tells her "there's a reason why I INSISTED on coming here even when you didn't want to." She says "why" and he proposes!

For the record, she says she cried and apologized the whole way home for her attitude because she admits that she was really bitchy to him that day. lol.

DrPhil 12-09-2010 03:45 PM

These stories make me a bit sad. LOL. Lo and behold, proposals can be as imperfect and unpredictable as life is.
