It Came from the Classic Horror Movie Thread

Before CGI and Animatronics...there was fake blood and prosthetics. before there was PG 13, there was just R and NC 17.

Before there was Jigsaw, there was Freddy and Jason

What are some of your favorite ol' school horror movies?

Ol' school meaning 15 to 20 years and older.

Also, if there have been any remakes, how have they stood up to the original?

My short list

Hellraiser 1 and 2
Nightmare on Elm Street of course
Fright Night
Evil Dead
American Werewolf in London
Exorcist
Any flicks of Christopher Lee as Dracula...hehehe

KSUViolet06 10-27-2009 09:31 AM

Carrie.

It is the only scary-type movie I can watch.

There was a remake in 2000ish I believe, but it was really stupid.

tld221 10-27-2009 09:34 AM

Carrie and Nightmare on Elm Street did it for me.

Was Tales from the Crypt a movie? I remember it being a TV show, and it scared the crap out of me. Then again, so did Unsolved Mysteries. Go figure.

DaemonSeid 10-27-2009 09:42 AM

Tales from the Crypt came out around 1989 - 90 I think.

AGDee 10-27-2009 09:47 AM

Sorry hon, but before PG-13, NC17 was X.

Psycho, The Exorcist, Friday the 13th and Halloween. The Shining. And that puppet movie with Chuckie.. so creepy. Child's Play? Is that the name of it?

YES! that one was creepy too. Child's Play 2 was the WORST.

no, her extensive knowledge of movie trivia. and i'm not old either!

psycho, the shining, hush, hush sweet charlotte, the brain(i think that is the name of it-this woman's head is severed in an auto accident, and her mad scientist boyfriend keeps her head alive until they can find a suitable body donor). i was probably about 5 or 6 when i saw this advert. at the movie theater and i am still freaked out about it! any psychological horror movie will effect me the same way, much more so than the blood and gore movies of today.

SydneyK 10-27-2009 02:30 PM

The Shining is definitely a favorite. Silence of the Lambs still seems recent to me, but it's almost 20 years old so I'm going to consider it a classic. [Slight hijack: One of the more frustrating things about teaching college students is that I'm constantly surrounded by non-aging people! They're here from 18-21ish, then leave before they get old. So, I feel like time is standing still... until I realize that I saw Silence of the Lambs in the movie theatre, and many of my students weren't even born yet. Then I feel incredibly old.]

Right!! And although not 'old' yet, one of my favorite 'new classics' LOL is Identity! Did not see that twist coming!

Did anyone get messed up after watching the 1970s version of Salem's Lot?

srmom 10-27-2009 02:48 PM

Carrie - that hand coming out of the dirt at the end still gets me.

The Shining - the CREEPY sisters, "Come play with us" Chills!!!

libramunoz 10-27-2009 03:24 PM

Carrie-read the book first (huge Stephen King fan--but thinks Koonz is tooooo sick)
The Exorcist--whoo wee! Linda Blairs head spinning around and throwing up pea green soup! Eck! Then the newer version of the Exorcist--with the creepier stuff added!
The Omen--read the book first! DAYMN SAM! Both were creepy!
Nightmare on Elm Street--Freddy Kruger--that's all that needs to be said.
Friday the 13th--1-3--truly creepy! Especially the first with crazy ass mom! Daymn, made it kinda creepy to go to camp that summer.
The Shining--REDRUM, REDRUM!
An American Werewolf in London--I still CANNOT watch that movie! My Mom took me to see it when I was a kid and it FREAKED me out! All I remember was seeing the first 5 minutes of that movie, screaming, and I do mean SCREAMING my head off in my Mom's sweater and her having to take us out of the theater into another movie--was terrified of that movie! Will not, can not, and have not watched it till this day and I'm 35 years old!
Pirhana (sp)--Oh me, oh my! I watched that movie with my brother-and damn, that boy scared the suffing outta me! He told me that our mother had ordered some and they were coming the next day! All I know is that when I see him again, I think I'm gonna find some pirhana's to put in his whitey tightys!

Cujo
Jaws
Misery
Holloween II
Friday 13th part IV

I know there's others, but those are just a few that come to mind right now.

knight_shadow 10-27-2009 04:43 PM

Really? No one is going to being up IT?

I'm a grown ass man who can watch every other movie that's been brought up..but this one..not so much lol

You'll love Cujo the movie. That and Misery are two of the best horror films I've ever seen. I never thought a Saint Bernard could look so scary.

eta: and the most painful part of Misery was the block of wood between the ankles. OUCH!!!!!!!

I cringe just thinking about that part.

Tales from the Crypt was a TV show, but Creepshow was a movie (and a graphic novel) from Stephen King. I always kind of think of them as being similar, as Creepshow was a series of short stories.

Halloween is on at 3pm today, I'm debating about watching it. Someone told me it's not gory so much as psychologically frightening because of what you don't see. And I'm intrigued because of an article I read eons ago about how the director got Jamie Lee Curtis to give him the right level of fear as they were filming out of sequence by using a 1-10 scale.

I was completely disappointed with Cujo as a movie. The great thing about the book is that you get the dog's point of view. Not true in the movie.

pbear19 10-28-2009 07:44 AM

Just watched it this weekend on netflix instant, and since it's from 1992 it counts...

Candyman.

I was 14 when it came out, and it completely terrified me!

I forgot all about Candyman. I seriously had nightmares for days about that movie.

I'm right there with you. "IT" was a scary movie.

I was also terrified by the original "Willard" when I was younger.

Be forewarned...a Fright Night remake is in the works

Tales From the Crypt was a originally a movie released in 1972 and was a precursor to the HBO series. Not as campy as Creepshow but it's still a good movie.

Does anyone remember The Changeling? Good classic horror film, no gore or nudity just good mystery.

How did I miss this thread the first go around?

I love many of the movies mentioned -- The Shining, Carrie, The Exorcist. Also loved the original TV version of Salem's Lot and especially the three Omen movies.

But only one movie has truly scared (or disturbed?) me to the core: Blue Velvet. I was away for work and watched it in the hotel room. Could not get to sleep for hours and hours afterward. A few days later I was back home and walking into Wal-Mart. As I walked in, the music system started playing Bobby Vinton's "Blue Velvet." I turned around and walked out.

For realz? Blue Velvet is one of David Lynches more "subdued" films.

I know. And I love his stuff.

For some reason, Blue Velvet just struck a very wierd nerve.
